Chapter 3:

Next Morning at Mathur, Chaturvedi, Trehan and Associates:

"Hi Good morning Ashutosh" Mallika enthusiastically greeted Ashutosh as soon as she entered the office, and took the visitor's chair across the table from him.

"Hi Mallika," he replied looking up briefly from his file. After an expectant silence from her, he said, "Kya hua? Want to discuss any of your today's cases with me?

Men! Thought Mallika, its as if he did not propose last night, as if we never got engaged. She sighed, and said, taking an imaginary strand of her hair with her empty left hand and putting it behind her hair, "Yes, there is a case, I want to discuss"

He now looked up, giving her his full attention, "Yeah! Tell me, kaunsa case?"

"Sooji ka halwa case" she said, tongue in cheek, taking out a box from her handbag.

"Mallika?" he was totally confused, then as soon as he saw the sooji ka halwa in the box she opened, "Ye toh tum mere birthday pe banati hona? Usme toh abhi 4-5 din hai, toh?"

Now she was totally disappointed. Neither has he asked about why my ring is missing from my finger, nor did he notice my new dress, and now, he doesn't even realize why I cooked this. God, did I imagine last night's events? He is behaving simply as if nothing happened.

He suddenly said, "wait, is this my engagement gift from you?" Seeing her eyes light up as she nodded, he tried to grab the box, but she pushed it away, "aise nahi"

"toh phir?" he asked puzzled.

In response, she filled up a spoon with some halwa and brought it to his mouth, with a slightly shy smile. Surprised, he opened his mouth, and ate the halwa, "really delicious!"

"Achchha? I haven't tasted it yet" she said with an expectant smile.

Good Lord! Thought Ashutosh, now what's she expecting? Being friends was so easy, being engaged was a different thing altogether, how was he going to manage? Hardly 12 hours have passed since my engagement and I am already tired of guessing what she expects me to do. On top of that, she has been looking at me with so much love, adoration in her eyes that I feel inadequate.

"Then taste it na?" he tried.

She shook her head disappointed. Finally he realized, "Give me another spoon please"

She replied with a blush, "why do we need another spoon?" and handed him the same spoon.

Good Lord, mujhe jaane aur kya kya karna padega. Why is she behaving all goey goey? But with a smile, he feeds her the halwa.

"Wah kya scene hai! Just hold on! Let me get my iphone out. Need to click some pics", said Armaan in his usual way. He had just arrived at the firm.

Mallika blushed, "hi Armaan, tum bhi halwa khaao, main baad me aati hoon."

"Haye haye, ye halwa toh wohi khayega jiske.. wait, Mallika, tumhari ring kahan hai? Maanta hoon, ye bahut boring type ka aadmi hai, but don't tell me you got bored of him in just 12 hours."

"Armaan tum bhi na! (Looking accusingly at Ashutosh) But at least you noticed"

Ashutosh said guiltily, "Sorry Mallika, mera dhyaan hi nahi gaya. But where is it?"

"Well.. actually I thought till we announce, sab poochhenge toh kya kahoongi, isiliye. I hope you don't mind Ashutosh."

"Why would I mind? Tumhe jaise sahi lage. I think, you are right, don't wear it till we announce." He said casually.

"Who said I m not wearing it", said she, as she took out her chain from inside her kurta and showed the ring which was placed like a pendant on it.

"Aha!" exclaimed Armaan, "bilkul dil ke paas!"

She blushed as she put it back inside her top and got up to leave the cabin, "I will see you later."

Ashutosh sighed with relief as soon as the door closed behind her. Armaan with his eyes still on the closed door said, "yaar Ashu, Mallika is practically glowing since last night. Hey, did you compliment her on the new dress she was wearing?"

His friend's guilty expressions told him, that he had not. Armaan sighed in exasperation, "Dekh mere bhai, you better learn fast. You can't behave so indifferent with her anymore. Girls are extremely sensitive about such things. Unke sagai ke baad kuch armaan hote hain, they want to be made to feel special, and uh.. wanted by their fianc. And with Mallika, these expectations are bound to be more as she has waited so long for you."

Ashutosh touched his forehead down on the table as a gesture of fatigue, "Don't you think, I am aware of that Armaan? (Then, abruptly getting up from his chair to pace his cabin, he continued in an agitated tone) Don't you think I have been trying to play the part of a besotted fianc to the best of my ability? Yesterday, ever since I preposed, I have been observing her closely, aur maine jo dekha, I have been feeling overwhelmed. I had no idea, she actually loves me to this extent. And last night, when she began that song with her heart in her eyes, my God, I actually felt inadequate, Armaan. She does indeed have many expectations, many dreams associated with our relationship."

As Armaan looked at him totally bewildered, he continued, "Yesterday, when you and Baba insisted, I thought, let me take the plunge, phir dheere dheere, we will develop our relationship and .. I thought we are such good friends – that should be a starting point, the rest will follow. But, now I realize.. being friends was another thing. Being engaged is a different ball-game altogether."

Armaan asked resignedly, "Look Ashu, you are not making sense here. Meri toh kuch samajh nahi aa raha hai, ke tu aakhir chahta kya hai. What do you want?"

His friend gave a tired sigh, "sirf thoda sa time chahta hoon. But the problem is, how do I tell her this? She looks at me like.."

"Ek baar keh kar toh dekhte Ashutosh, samajh jaati." Both of them turn around to see Mallika standing at the cabin door. She had forgotten her handbag in his cabin and had returned to collect that. Ashutosh pleaded to Armaan with his eyes, to leave them alone. With a perceptible nod to him, and a comforting pat on Mallika's shoulder, Armaan left the cabin.

"Baitho", Ashutosh said uncertainly. Mallika silently took a visitor's chair and he took another visitor's chair adjacent to her. He tried to open his mouth, but no words came. Finally, she said, "I am sorry Ashutosh, that I made you feel uncomfortable by being so.."

"No, Mallika, its not YOUR fault. Problem meri hai.. but I hope you understand.. I just.. well, I just need time", he said.

"I understand.. don't worry. I value our friendship the most. Abhi ke liye utna hi kafi hai" She replied sincerely, then with an attempt at humour continued, "actually I don't know mujhe bhi kya ho gaya tha kal raat se. I was behaving so funny" she tried to laugh at herself but her eyes brimmed over.

"Mallika, please.. I understand your feeling, and just need time to reciprocate. But that does not mean you try to laugh at your feelings"

She wiped her tears and said good humoredly, "Halwa wakei me achchha bana haina? Jaldi khaa lo, warna Armaan aa jayega khaane. Chalo jaldi kholo dabba, mujhe bhi khana hai"

Ashutosh, silently opened the box and kept it between them. She brought out another spoon from her handbag and both started eating. Midway, she grabbed the box, "tumhara share khatam, ab ye mera hai."

The usual ease reestablished between them, he made a lunge for the box, saying, "this is cheating. Dono ne equal khaya hai. Dono saath hi toh kha rahe the."

"Aur tumhare ek bite mere teen bites ke barabar hota hai" she pulled the box further away from him, at which he got up and tried to snatch the box again.

The noise of their running around, which ensued from the cabin alarmed Armaan, who rushed inside and was relieved to witness the scene before him. The two were quarrelling like kids over the halwa and trying to take as much as possible, in each spoonful. Finally, when the halwa was finished, they looked up, saw Armaan and smiled sheepishly.

"Not fair. Akele akele halwa kha liya? Mujhe taste bhi nahi karaya?" he said in a mock-hurt tone.

Mallika took out another box and said "Arre aisa bhi ho sakta hai?" While Armaan muttered a delighted thanks and started eating with gusto, Ashutosh made a face and said, "not fair Mallika, hum dono ek box me se share Karen aur Armaan ke liye alag box?"

Mallika said, tongue in cheek, "Samjha karo na, uska pet kitna bada hai!" And both started laughing. Armaan gave them an injured look and then he too joined the laughter.

After the laughter subsided, Ashutosh placed his hand on Mallika's hand, squeezed it gently and said, "Thank you!" She just blinked in acknowledgement.

That afternoon at Solankis' Law Firm:

"Verma, tum office me? Aao aao", Advocate Kapil Solanki had been surprised when his receptionist told him that his best friend cum next door neighbor had come in to meet him. He led him to the couch in his cabin and both friends sat down.

"Haan Solanki, tum se baat karni thi. Yahan se guzar raha tha toh socha ki tumse yahin baat kar loon" Yograj Verma began.

"Haan, bolo na kya baat hai? Tum kuch pareshaan lag rahe ho?" his friend prompted.

"Tum toh jaante hi ho Solanki ke meri pareshaani ka ek hi kaaran hai - Nidhi. Kuch samajh me hi nahi aata ke kya karoon main is ladki ka. Jab tak bachi thi theek tha, lekin ab badi ho gayi hai, toh she is giving me sleepless nights. Uspe Rohan se shaadi karne ka bhoot sawar ho gaya hai."

"Rohan, you mean, that Rohan Malhotra? Has she fallen for that guy?" Mr. Solanki asked in alarm.

"Agar aisa hota Solanki, toh phir bhi I would have known how to deal with it, but the fact is she just wants to marry him for his money and this attitude of hers worries me no end. Mujhe toh aaj kal usko dekh ke yakeen hi nahi hota ke vo meri beti hai. Kya ye sanskaar diye hain maine use?"

"Ji Bhaisahib, Chinta ki baat toh hai"

Both friends looked up to see Shyama Solanki, Kapil's wife and partner in his law firm. She continued, "Achcha kiya jo aap yahan chale aaye, mujhe bhi aapse baat karni thi. Anji ne subah hi mujhse is baare me baat ki, woh bhi Nidhi ko leke bahut pareshaan hai. Dekhiye Bhaisahib, main jaanti hoon ke Nidhi ke maamle me mera interference na aapko pasand hai, naahi Buaji ko, lekin Nandini jaate jaate Nidhi ki jimmedari mujhe somp ke gayi thi, isiliye.."

"Bhabhiji, please mujhe aur sharminda mat kijiye." Unable to meet her eyes, Col. Verma got up, stood facing the window, and continued, "Saari galti meri hi hai. Agar maine aap ko roka nahi hota, toh mujhe aaj ye din nahi dekhna padta. Lekin, us waqt, main Nandini ko is tarah se achanak kho baitha aur phir, Bua apna sab kuch chhod ke sirf Nidhi ke liye yahan aagayi. Jab unhone Nidhi ko is tarah sambhalna chaha, use pamper karke. Toh mujhe laga ke yehi sahi tareeka hai use paalne ka. Jab aap use daantti thi bachpan me, toh buaji ko bilkul achcha nahi lagta tha, aur mujhse bhi nahi bardaasht hota tha. Nandini ke jaane ke baad main Nidhi ko leke bahut zyaada sensitive ho gaya tha. Aakhir wohi toh meri poori duniya thi. Lekin, isi kaaran maine use zaroorat se zyaada pamper kiya, I never let her grow up and now, woh mere hi haath se nikal chuki hai. Bhabhiji I am really sorry, agar maine aapko Nidhi se door rehne ke liye nahi kaha hota toh aaj ye haalaat nahi khade hote hamare saamne. Nidhi ko bhi Anji ki tarah achchhi parwarish mil jaati aur woh bhi Anji ki tarah sanskaari aur samajdaar hoti. Main use na achchhi parvarish de paaya naahi sanskaaar"

"Verma, there is no use crying over spilt milk. Jo beet gayi so beet gayi. Abhi, we need to try to salvage the situation. I am sure, abhi bhi Nidhi ko sahi raaste pe laaya ja sakta hai. So don't worry." Solanki tried to reassure his friend.

"Please ab aap dono hi bataiye ke main kya karoon, meri toh kuch samajh nahi aa raha."

"Bhaisahib main sochti hoon ke uska dhyaan kisi productive activity me lagana hoga. I think she should join some law firm as a trainee."

As Col. Verma nodded rather unsurely, Kapil Solanki said, "I think Shyama is right, Verma. Is tarah, her currently idle mind would be preoccupied and uske paas time bhi nahi hoga, faaltu baaten sochne ka, aur Rohan ke saath ghumne phirne ka. I think kal se Nidhi yahin aa jaye toh theek hai. "

Now he was at ease. "Haan Solanki, Nidhi yahan rahegi din bhar toh mujhe bhi tasalli rahegi"

Shyama said, "sorry Bhaisahib, I don't think, Nidhi joining our firm will serve the purpose. No matter what, we will always be 'uncle-aunty' for her. Neither she, nor we, will be able to behave professionally with her. If she has learn some discipline and get a sense of responsibility, we need her in some law firm which is totally new to her, where she has no choice but to behave professionally right from the beginning."

"Lekin Bhabhi, you know na how protective I feel about her? Phir woh aise kisi office me kaam karegi toh, I will be very tense"

"Bhaisahib, you can't be so protective about her. Aur jab woh us Rohan jaise ladke ke saath ghumti hai, tab aap kya kar paate hain? Aur hum itne saare lawyers ko jaante hain, toh hum use kisi aisi waisi jagah toh nahi bhejenge na?"

"Bhabhiji, Nidhi ke bachpan me maine aap ki baat na maanke jo galati kar di, woh galati main dobara nahi dourana chahta, isiliye, ab se Nidhi se juda har faisla aap ko hi karna hai. Apni manmaani karke toh main nateeja bhugat chukka hoon.

"Bhaisahib, don't blame yourself. Aap un dino jin haalaat se guzare the, Nidhi me aapka andha moh hona natural tha. Anyways, hume aaj aur aanewale kal ke baare me sochna chahiye. Kyon Kapil, aap sehmat hain mujhse? Of course, it would be a delight to have her here, lekin humara jo purpose hai woh serve nahi hoga"

Kapil nods slowly, "hmm, I think you are right. Lekin kiski office me bheje use? Ek toh most senior lawyers want juniors (trainees) who are somewhat experienced. Aur ye Nidhi toh L.L.B. khatam karke ghar pe baithi hai, 1 &1/2 saal se."

"Haan Kapil, lekin aap kisi se baat kijiye na? Maybe, Tiwari and Associates?"

"Shyama, I agree they are the best, but too many trainees there, so too much competition. What about Kapoor? Do you think she will learn be good enough in his office?", asked Solanki

"Well, Kapoor? He is a definitely good, but don't you think he is a bit too old? I think, he is too laid back to handle Nidhi well? Also, his set up is too small for her to learn something concrete. I think Shah's legal firm would be better, wouldn't it?

Kapil thought for a while and began slowly, "Y..es, maybe. (then, as if something strikes him) But.. I mean I am not sure if he would agree, anyways, wait let me just talk to him right away."

He takes out his phone and places the call. After talking for 10 mins, he hangs up and shrugs helplessly, "He sweetly refused."

Shyama was disappointed. But, Verma said, "its okay Solanki, hum kuch aur sochte hain. Maybe, I can engage her in some other activity."

"Ek minute!" Kapil exclaimed, "Shyama, what do you think about Mathur, Chaturvedi, Trehan and Associates?"

Shyama immediately agreed, "Yes, considering all factors, I think that would be the perfect place for Nidhi. Mujhe ye khayal kyun nahi aaya"

Her husband immediately called up Ashutosh, and after a while cut the call and said, "Verma, Nidhi ko Monday ko bhej dena, subah 11 baje." Seeing the apprehension on his friend's face, he continued, "Don't worry Verma, achchhi jagah hai. The firm is run by three dynamic and comparatively young lawyers. Nidhi will learn a lot with them."

"Solanki, tum kehte ho toh theek hi hoga. But abhi toh, hamari aadhi problem bhi solve nahi hui hai. Our biggest problem is Nidhi ko wahan bhejna. Main bolunga toh thode hi na maanegi"

Shyama laughed, "haan bhaisahib, ye problem hai toh badi, lekin, abhi aaj toh Friday hai, hamare paas 3 din hain abhi. Actually, I think lets leave it to Anji, woh mana legi use."

Both the men agreed immediately.

Next morning, Solanki's residence, Anji's room.

"Anji, chal na yaar shopping chalte hain. I am getting bored." pleaded Nidhi.

Anji getting ready replied in a harried tone, "dekh abhi na muje bahut kaam hai, phir kabhi jayenge. I have to leave." Then, as if completely forgetting Nidhi's presence, she mentally checks off items on her list, putting them in her bag. She is about to leave the room, when she comes back, "arre woh deaigns kahan rakhe maine? Haan yaad aaya" She ran to her desk and took them out of a drawer. But before she could rush out again, Nidhi caught hold of her hand, "main bhi chaloon, I m getting bored yaar. Rohan bhi weekend pe apni girlfriends ke saath busy rehta hai".

"Can't blame him na, tu toh free rehti hai hamesha. Woh ladkiyaan, they have their jobs or college on weekdays, na. Chal yaar, I need to get a lot done today. Tu akeli chali jaa na shopping, get one new piece of everything na – one new dress, 1 handbag, 1 footwear, one jewelry set, accessories, make up – all matching. Tera time bhi pass ho jaayega, chal chalti hoon." And she left without a backward glance, hoping that she had made the impact on her friend she had intended to make with her act.

Dejectedly, Nidhi came out of Anji's room to see Shyama bustling about. "Arre Nidhi, kuch chahiye kya beta? Naashta khaogi?"

"Ji aunty, aapke haath ka poha khaane ka mann kar raha hai. Please bana dijiye na?"

Shyama gave her a helpless look, "Nidhi, abhi mujhe urgently office jaana hai, tu toh free hi rehti haina? Kal aajaana, bana doongi. Abhi upma kha le" and then, she shouted to her husband, "Kapil chaliye, der ho jayegi, aapne file li na?"

"Haan, chalo, bye Nidhi! Have fun", he said and the couple too left talking about their case.

Feeling low and unwanted, Nidhi returned to her own house next door. She went to her father's room, and said, "Baba, chaliye na kahin bahar ghumne chalte hain, bahut dino se gayi nahi aapke saath kahin ghumne."

Her father looked up distractedly from his laptop, "Nidhi, I am trying to work out a profitable deal with an overseas client. I promise agar ye deal ho gayi toh you will get a brand new Mercedes Benz. But please beta abhi tum jao, please bahut kaam hai" said CV, pretending to concentrate on his laptop, which had a game of chess open!

Thoroughly irritated and annoyed, she walked out of her father's room only to see her Dadi Bua leaving for temple. "Dadi bua, main bhi chaloon mandir aapke saath?"

"Arre nahi meri bachchi. Tu wahan kya karegi?" then shouting to Chhote Sarkar, she said, "Abbe manhus, theek ek ghante me pahunch jaana mandir. Parsaad leke. Aur sab kuch ek dum shuddhi se banana – samjha?"

He nodded obediently and she left. Nidhi called him as he was about to go, "CS, mere liye maggi bana dijiye na, bhookh lagi hai".

"Bibiji, aapne suna na dadi bua ne kya kaha? Agar Parsaad me aapki maggi ki khusboo bhi aa gayi toh unke bajrangbali bhi mujhe unke prakop se nahi bacha paayenge. Aap bas 1 & ghanta rukiye, hum fatafat parsaad bana ke pahuncha den, phir jo aap kahen vo bana denge"

Nidhi stomped her foot angrily, took a packet of lays chips and went to her room to watch tv. But, nothing seemed to interest her and she simply flipped channels. The rest of the day passed on the same note for her, with everyone pretending to be too busy to even talk to her. That night, she cried herself to sleep, thinking she was not needed by anyone and no one loved her or cared for her.

The next morning, over breakfast, she said, "Baba, main soch rahi thi ke main bhi aapka office join kar loon"

Col. Verma took it lightly, "Kyun beta kya hua? Want more money? Theek hai, aaj hi tere account me 10 lakh aur jamaa kara deta hoon, happy?" (But he secretly gave a missed call to Solanki)

"Nahi Baba,ye baat nahi hai. I want to do something. Poora din bore ho jaati hoon."

"Kyun beta, bore kaise hoti hai? Go for shopping, movies, indulge yourself wherever you want. Just enjoy your life na. Ye business mujhe hi handle karne de."

"Baba, aap meri baat kyun nahi samajhte?" she said in an irritated tone. "Kal se main aapka office join kar rahi hoon, bas"

"Beta, I don't mind, lekin tujhe business ke baare me kuch nahi pata na? Toh what will you do there?"

"Maybe I can help you with the legal issues and documentation" she said, rather unsurely.

"But Nidhi, you don't know anything about the practical aspects of law yet. See, you just leave it na. Kyun jhanjhat me padna chahti hai, chhod na. You just enjoy your life."

Just then, Kapil Solanki walked in as per the plan. "Uncle, uncle, can I join your firm?"

He acted surprised, "Join our firm? What for?"

"I want to use my education uncle. I want to learn how to practice law"

"Arre beta, humne toh last week hi do fresh L.L.B.s ko hire kiya hai"

"Lekin uncle, I too can join you na? It would be like having an extra hand"

"See Nidhi, don't mind. But neither Shyama nor I have the time to train one additional junior. Sorry Beta"

Nidhi was dejected. Solanki took up his chance, "Nidhi, are you really serious about this?"

"Very serious Uncle!"

"Then, I can recommend you to a colleague of mine. But beta, you need to work very hard and be very disciplined. Since I am recommending you, meri izzat ka sawaal hai"

"Ji uncle, I won't give you a reason to regret", she said very sincerely.

"Okay, agar tum itni serious ho toh let me try."

"Thank you uncle"
