I live in the USA and watching this show and watching how Pankhuri is trying to get everyone to live together I have a question:

Is joint families living together common in India like in all the serials/shows including pydh?

I see so many new Indians from India come here on a regular basis with their new wives from India but they live by themself for years and grandpa/granma visits occasionally.

It is very very very rare to see joint indian families living together here in the USA. So when I watch all the serials it looks like it is common and normal to live together.

I don't know how I would live with everyone like in Sanskar Darohar Apno Ki show where all brothers, sisters, aunts, uncle they all live in one house.

Please enlighten me so I can know the real truth or is it only because they want to show that in the serials?

Generally in Big Cities majority of the people live in Nuclear Families & the apartments are also small (1/2/3/4 Rooms) . There will a joint family in Big houses, which are rarity in Big Cities. The Medium range Cities with bigger Houses, also do have joint family, but as new Buildings come up, Nuclear Families also now form a Majority.

Nowadays it is very rare 2 see Joint families..atleast in our place..I am from South India...N last generation Joint families were so common...Even I was a part of joint family till age 10...But after dat every1 started shifting 2 cities ...

Mainly becoz of 3 reasons 1) Shifting 4 Job purpose as nowadays high paid jobs are available n cities so many members shifted 2 cities with their family only 2) Members are increasing so cnat afford in a single home 3)Nowadys people prefer privacy and it is not possible if U r in a joint family

In village areas Joint family system exist now also...but not common like before...

I am not from India but originally from Fiji but of Indian descend. In Fiji it is common to live in joint family in the rural areas and to some extend in urban and semi-urban areas. The joy of living in a joint family is quite different from living as a nuclear family. We miss a lot in nuclear family.

I live in the uk and am not from Indian, so cannot comment onfamilies in India.

I have a total of 72 first cousins from mum side and dads side. If I include grandparents, my siblings and uncle aunts then we are well over a 100... I don't know how I would have survived if we were a joint family (tooo many people yaar)!!!!!!!!!!!

My husband however is from a joint family and from Kashmir, when I go over on holiday I love living in the joint family because here in UK its just me and hubby.

It depends, but normally I do not come across people who live in joint families. And I am sure that I will not be able to manage with uncle, aunties cousins and ect.! But on a serious not there are still many joint families in India but slowly the number is fading away.
