Ashish Kapoor aka Dheer of Saat Phere is all set to don the role of King Dipendra, who allegedly gunned down most of the royal family members, in an international docu-drama based on the Nepal royal massacre.

The film showcases a true account of the June 1, 2001 tragedy and also deals with the mental condition of Dipendra at that time, which drove him to behave likewise. Ashish plays Dipendra, who was alleged of killing his family members during a get-together. Produced by a renowned English production house 3BM, and directed by Clive Maltby, the film is called Zero Hour - A Royal Massacre and will be screened on Discovery channel.

Ashish who has earlier worked in short films like Open Doors and War or Peace, says, "Working for this particular film was a great experience. This was the first time that I worked with a foreign crew. Plus it was a challenge to play a real life character that recently became a part of history. Dipendra is a complex character. An affable person to the world, he also had a wild side to him which would come to fore once in a while, but reached its zenith on the fateful night of June 1, 2001. I had to learn so much about Dipendra, like the way he conducted himself in real life."

No he wasn't completely psycho...I remember that day. I actually read it in the Los Angeles Times here in the States and it was reported that Dipendra killed his family over a girl he was in love with. I think the family didn't want him to marry her or something because she was an outsider and not royal. Apparenlty because of the argument, he went senile and killed his family. And they showed the picture of the girl too...she's pretty, like the way actress Kajol looks.

Dipendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, King of Nepal (June 27, 1971 – June 4, 2001) was King of Nepal from June 1 to June 4, 2001. He was accused of killing his family at a royal dinner on June 1, 2001. Dipendra was also mortally wounded, either by his own hand or at the hands of the palace guard, and with the murder of his father, officially became king for the three days he lingered in a coma.

Dipendra was educated at Eton College, England, and according to the Irish Times of June 4, 2001, "was reportedly excused from chapel when he turned 18. According to Nepali tradition, the prince effectively became a god on his birthday and he could not be seen worshipping another." The report also noted that the prince had been disciplined while at Eton for selling alcohol.

After Eton, he attended Tribhuvan University in Nepal and later joined the Royal Nepal Military Academy. He was known to have been skilled in kung fu.

[edit] Motive for murder

Dipendra reportedly assassinated family members because of anger over a marriage dispute. Dipendra's choice for a bride was Devyani Rana, a member of the Rana clan, with whom the Shah family of kings have an historic animosity. The Rana clan had served as the hereditary prime ministers of Nepal until 1951, with the title Maharaja, and the two clans had a long history of inter-marriages.

According to official accounts, Dipendra was denied his choice of a wife by his mother, and so he massacred his family in a much-publicised incident after indulging in a drinking binge. Among the dead were his father King Birendra, mother, brother, and sister. Dipendra survived comatose for three days, and was proclaimed king in his hospital bed. He died of his injuries on June 4 and was succeeded by his uncle, Prince Gyanendra [1].

Gyanendra, not as beloved in the country as his brother Birendra, had been third in line to the throne before the massacre. He was out of town (in Pokhara) during the massacre and was the closest surviving relative of the king. Gyanendra's son, Crown Prince Paras, was reportedly in the royal palace during the massacre but escaped injury.

Conspiracy theories circulate in Nepal about the deaths. It has been suggested that instead Gyanendra had ordered the massacre of King Birendra and his family so that Gyanendra and his own family could succeed. It cannot be purely coincidental, goes the theory, that Gyanendra's son and wife escaped. However Gyanendra's wife was severely injured in the shooting.

Several survivors have publicly confirmed that Dipendra was doing the shooting, as was documented in a BBC documentary.
