According to eyewitness reports, three to four men armed with sharp weapons stormed the office of 'Dainik Ganadoot' at around 3.30pm and asked for the newspaper's editor Sushil Choudhury. When the office staff inquired about their identities, they attacked three employees with the weapons.
The three—manager Ranjit Choudhury, proofreader Sujit Bhattacharjee and driver Balaram Ghosh—sustained serious injuries. They died on the way to Agartala Government Medical Hospital.
"The attackers left the place within three to four minutes, even before the three victims could raise an alarm," said police, citing the initial statement of the employees.
Police said a search operation has been launched but no arrests have been made as yet. Police suspect the attackers could be members of a criminal gang against which the newspaper has been publishing reports.
This is for the first time in Tripura that miscreants have attacked a newspaper house and killed its employees inside the office in broad daylight. The incident triggered tension in Agartala.
Congress has called a 12-hour Agartala bandh from 6am Tuesday against deteriorating law and order in the city.
