"I am seeing things. Nightmares. There are blood splatters on my ivory coat. Numbing sensations. Dried tears. He is screaming in pain. My sunshine is fading away. I love him way too much to lose him. This. I. We must help him back to safety. Please".
"I will get our passports, you call the chopper. We are flying down to Stanford in ten minutes".

Chapter 12
Trails of the Past
With a dizzy head and sweaty palms, he picked up the shotgun from underneath her vanity. He had glued it securely to the mahogany the first night they were together. But dear God, not for this. Not once had he dreamed a day would come when the king would be pointing a loaded weapon at his lawfully wedded wife.
"Hands in the air", his finger tugged on the trigger just enough to make her stop in her tracks. Even in shock, she looked at him with loving eyes. Those hazel pearls that pulled him in last night. And the night before that. He could no longer count the number of times her she had made his toes curl. She was his dream morphed into reality and now, this was melting away. He couldn't be weak, not now.
"My lord", she whispered in disbelief.
"Not another word", he screamed to muffle down his conscience asking to squeeze his woman tight and protect her.
"We sent Keshab Malik, your brother and my brother-in-law, to Yale where he should be completing his senior year of International Policy Development. Am I correct?"
She hesitated just enough to confirm his suspicions.
"Sir, I did not want to bother you at a time when our nation is fragile".
Why would she not look him in the eye?
"Someone is dead Madhubala and I find out from a hospital janitor threatening to leak a story to the press. How can you possibly explain all this?"
She looked up and away, anywhere but toward her husband. Her house of cards could not withstand the storm. She told whatever portion of the truth she could give out without endangering any more lives.
"Kesh was shot three times in the chest. Two bullets hit the girlfriend first. She died on scene. He called while I was in New York. I got him to the hospital and dialed 911. The CIA helped silence the media. I handled..."
"A murder. You helped cover up. I am sorry 'handle' a murder".
"Sir, please hear me out. My brother is fighting to survive. The love of his life is frozen blue in a morgue. I did what I deemed urgent at the time. I will make certain she gets justice. I simply'."
"Why did he call you Liz?"
She swallowed the words still stuck her throat.
"Do not make me repeat myself. Why did Kesh not say di or Madhu or the Queen? Why Liz?"
"Liz like Elizabeth. The queen of England? He is a clown. You know that".
Madhu pressed her fingers on his trying to lower the gun, to calm his racing heart, to let him rationalize. But he would not give. His questioning was more determined than ever.
"No one pokes fun during an emergency".
"No one but Kesh".
"I refuse to believe you. Why is he in Stanford? Why did you find it fit to let him transfer out there while I sign blank cheques to the account of a non-existent Yale scholar? Why are you hiding things from me? And don't you give me that bullshit argument of you didn't want to burden my pretty little mind with thinking. I am the King and I rule you, your family, your people. No one is above me. No one keeps secrets from the ruler. Now speak".
Tears gushing down her cheeks like opened floodgates. The queen refused to kneel down today. Today, she stood strong looking straight in the eye of gun, holding it up to her forehead. She spoke what very well may have been a historic slam to the one in power.
"I require you to speak the hell up Madhubala".
"The only living member of my bloodline line is in a foreign land connected to half a dozen catheters, wires and needles and your majesty, a sheltered royal, has the nerve to tell I am his slave. You think I am not made aware of that fact every waking moment? We're all your slaves, young master. No need to rub it in time and time again. Whatever this phase of yours is, making yourself sound like the almighty, I am not interested. I have a flight to catch and a brother to nurse. I am sorry for your wounded ego. But, whatever this is, get over it".
The gun dropped and a shot was fired, piercing right through the middle of their bed. This time, the wrongs would not be righted so quickly.
