Interview : 'The album is full of melodious and beautiful songs'

'Piya Basanti' still haunts us, and after the colossal success of the song, the man behind it Ustad Sultan Khan brings us another bout of fresh melodies with his brand new album. His new album is an amalgamation of three front league singers of the industry Chitra, Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal. These three singing divas team with legendary Khan Saab and lend vocals to the six tracks of the album 'Ustad and the Divas'. A tte--tte with Ustad Sultan Khan, who intends to mesmerize us once again and strum our hearts with his soulful rendition.

Excerpts from the Interview:

We would like to know something about your new album 'Ustad and the Divas'?

The album comprises six tracks all with romantic essence and feel. The music is purely Hindustani without any western flavour. Sandesh Shandilya has composed the song. I've the company of three great singers Chitra, Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal who have sung along with me for the songs. In one word the album is full of melodious and beautiful songs.

What is the kind of composition of Sandesh Shandilya?

Sandesh is one of the talented music directors we've around and he has composed some immensely beautiful and melodious tunes. I've worked with him many times before for Piya Basanti and Pyar Ke Geet. These songs give a glimpse at the kind of music that he creates. A music director has to achieve certain balance while composing and he excels in that. Making the music extremely high or low is something that he can do very well. He has composed the songs such that people of all generation will like them.

You again team up with Chitra after Piya Basanti. How has it been this time?

It is a pleasure working with her and the experience was very nice. We've worked with each other and so there is a relaxed environment. Though Chitra is not fluent in Hindi, she is exceptionally brilliant when she sings. While working with veteran artistes like me, young people do get nervous, so I always look into it that things go well. I try to manage things.

This is for the first time you've sung with Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghosal. How did it go?

I've already mentioned that I always look into it that things go well and people working with me are comfortable and relaxed without any kind of pressure. I have grown old, but I'm soft by nature and so for anybody to work with me is trouble free. Indeed this is an amazing combination, a veteran singing with the new generation. I've an old and honed voice but they have youthful zeal with certain level of innocence and freshness. So the mix and combination is very exciting. Sunidhi and Shreya are extremely talented girls and it is a pleasure working with them.

Your album is being launched by new music label by T-series called YBR. How do you feel about it?

I'm glad about it. It is necessary for a person to think, watch and listen to good things and this is what this album intends to do. There is nothing artificial, fake or made up in this album. All the people associated with the album have worked hard to make it their best and the effort shows. Be it the singers, music director Sandesh Shandilya or music programmers Salim-Sulaiman all have wanted to make the music special. It is a great experience working with all of them.

What do you have to say about Vinay Sapru and Radhika Rao who are the Creative directors and CEO of YBR Records Pvt Ltd?

Both of them are amazing, very professional and completely involved in the making of the album. They're extremely hard working and have put their best efforts. The album has evolved out of teamwork. Vinay Sapru and Radhika Rao have been supportive throughout. I'm thankful to all for the album.
