10 years of Drishyam
Contrary to what most people felt, she was extremely comfortable in small spaces. Solitary confinement was designed to induce claustrophobia by shrinking their space and alienating them from people for several days. This worsened the inmates' calmness and they ended up being subjugated. It was a nightmare for many people and thus an effective tool for keeping patients under control. She sat on the bed waiting and silently went through the plan once more in her head.
*****
Five days ago:
"Why do you have to go to solitary cells to plant a simple bug? You can do it when you are in therapy," Arnav said relaxing on his back on the lush lawn. Khushi, sitting next to him, shook her head.
"It cannot be simple bug. Whatever patients say is recorded and digitized. They are organized in centralized repository accessible to authorized personnel. What I want is the notes these doctors make on inmates, the past session details and the archive." Khushi explained.
"Now you are sounding paranoid Khushi," Arnav admonished.
"Something is wrong here Arnav. I agree that none of us here are innocent beings but that doesn't give people like Malvika to…abuse her powers." Khushi snarled.
Arnav opened his eyes and frowned. "What are you talking about?"
Khushi swallowed. "Malvika has history Arnav. And it isn't good. But trust me when I say that it's important to get hands on the past information too." She insisted.
Arnav shrugged. "I don't care what you wish to do with the information. I am here to overcome my boredom, that's all." He replied. "So what's on your mind?"
Khushi explained a possible way of planting spyware in plug points, DSL router, LAN cables etc. She could see Arnav was getting excited about breaking into the facility they were in. Once she was finished, he smiled.
"Do you mind if I improvise your plan to reduce probability of errors?" He asked raising an eyebrow.
She smiled. "Be my guest."

She waited till the lights were out and stillness descended the facility. There checked her watch which was slipped to her by a nurse while she was being confined in solitary and saw that it was almost time. Like planned, she heard the gentle creaky sound of the door opening. A plump orderly peeked in and smiled at her.
"You have twenty minutes. Go." He said ushering her. She nodded and started the countdown on her watch.
The orderly was Arnav's insider man in the facility who Arnav trusted simply because he had enough blackmail material on the man. The instruction to him was to get the camera go offline for at least fifteen minutes without raising too many red flags. All he had to do was poke the camera while carrying a large ladder 'accidentally' thus altering the camera by tilting away from the lobby. As the facility's security protocol suggested, the camera would be immediately taken offline and re-calibrated remotely. This would take around twenty five minutes given how quickly the glitch was rectified. The orderly had taken four minutes to report the problem and run back to solitary confinement to let Khushi out thus giving her around fifteen minutes to do whatever she wanted to.
Khushi immediately ducked into janitor's closet where there were mops and cleaning supplies. Three days ago she had asked one of 'her people' inside the facility to leave a large stool inside the closet. These people didn't ask questions and she didn't offer an explanation. They received half the payment in advance and the remaining would be delivered immediately after her job was completed. She climbed the stool and pulled out the already loosened AC duct vent. Releasing a deep breath she pulled herself up and crouched as soon as her head hit the roof. She crawled forward smoothly and swiftly till she found a fork in the duct. Using her upper body strength she pushed open a vent on her left and jumped on the ground below. She was now standing inside a small electrical maintenance room. Without wasting any more time, she opened a small door in the corner of the room which opened a shaft not more than three feet wide had thick wiring running across the height of the building. The small shaft had a wire and grip hanging from the top floor – thanks to Arnav bribing an electrician. She smoothly slid up the rope mentally thanking the training she took as a teen and arrived at the floor above. Using the AC duct of the electrical room she clambered to Dr. Jha's office in six minutes as calculated.
Climbing down would be faster thus she was okay with the timing. She located the plug point and quickly got to work. Arnav had given her the tools and the hardware in the morning and she had it in her pocket since then. It didn't take more than four minutes to install listening device in power board and a data packet piggy backing device on ADSL socket. The second one wasn't given to her by Arnav and he didn't know about it either. She didn't feel it was necessary to tell him this part of the plan.
She had to repeat the same in Malvika's room too in record speed and she was immensely thankful that the two rooms were next to each other and separated by a small library. She had much lesser time than she anticipated but there was nothing she could do about it. If at all she was caught while running to her room, then they had to move to plan B.
Trust Arnav to formulate a plan B and a plan B for plan B. And he called her paranoid.
She checked her watched and calmed her mind when she realized that she was running a minute late. She hurried back to Shyam's cabin and climbed the AC duct using his chair. When cleaning crew came in morning, they would tighten the vent and keep the chair behind the table and not report anything fishy. The same had been advised to the electrician and the janitor who would be doing in the electrical room and closet respectively. As calculated, it took lesser time to make it to the electrical room. She urged her body to move faster as she crawled in AC duct. Without bothering to wipe the sweat off her face, she opened the janitor closet door and ran to her solitary room.
The moment she closed the door behind her, the stop watch beeped indicating that she had run out of time. She didn't know if she was caught by the camera while she was sneaking into the room. She sat on her bed and waited. If she was indeed busted, plan B would be put in motion which was messy and involved a set of complications – like physically hurting someone and she wasn't a fan of that style. There was no movement for another forty minutes. As orderlies walked through corridors checking upon people in solitary, she heard three knocks on her door. It was a code to let her know that she was clear and everything had gone according to her plan.
She was still high on adrenaline and the rush finally settled in her stomach. She laughed gaily happy about the success of this operation. She wasn't sure why Arnav was helping her as she didn't buy his wooly response but she was glad that he did. He was more dangerous than he let on and that evening she felt it useful.
Arnav had originally suggested that someone else should break in and do this. But the risk was too high. It was easier and cleaner to do it themselves without divulging the entire plan to someone. Now there were five random people who rarely crossed each others path with different set of instructions.
She closed her eyes sleep far away from her and wondered how Arnav would react when he would realize that Akash wasn't the only person of interest. However he had no idea that she had installed hardware to tap the broadband data packets and her people were tracking it via GSM.
Knowing Arnav, he would probably kill her with his own hands if he came to know that she did something like this. However she had a strange feeling that he already anticipated that she was going to pull a stunt like this and yet had gone ahead with the plan.
She now had no idea what he was up to and what kind of game he was playing.
Note: We had 22 hour power loss. It was good in a way cause I started working on a new story - a thriller again with a different touch in my notebook.
Thanks Sur / Ivre for beta-reading this chapter :-) Sorry had to spoil a bit of the story to explain certain things.
