Mumbai: On Monday, the residents of Juhu including celebrities took to the streets in huge numbers to protest against the apathy of the civic authorities in providing basic amenities. The residents, numbering over 200 were protesting against the potholes, uncleared garbage and clogged drains, post July 26 floods.
The residents took out a march through Andheri and Juhu and ended at hotel Tulip Star.
The Times of India joined hands with the residents to highlight their plight.
Television hostess Pooja Bedi demanded better infrastructure and said over Rs 58,000 crore is paid as tax but there is no account as to where it was going. Film makers Vinta Nanda and Ashok Pandit took actively participated in the protest.
For actors Karan Wahi and Shweta Gulati, who play Ranveer and Tia in the popular tele-serial Remix, there was an additional ground to join the march. Their friend Habib, who plays Nakul in the show, is in a critical condition after he got stuck inside a car for over 18 hours during the floods. "Things would have been better, if we had better infrastructure,'' Gulati said. They stay at Oshiwara and were not originally from Mumbai.
Anu Ranjan, president of Indian Television Academy, who lives at Yari Road said that the protest was essential as it would be a great platform to reach out to the government. "All these time, the issue was being discussed amongst us and the authorities took us for granted,'' Anu said.
Yari Road resident and TV veejay Ruby Bhatia said that though flood was not avoidable, the lack of infrastructure was visible.
Actor Raza Murad said the authorities are answerable for the poor services. "The situation would have been different if the authorities did their duty,'' he said.
