The world has gone crazy. So crazy that a man in his forties is being paid nearly 25 million (after tax) for 100-125 episodes, to host a television game show. That's just over 200,000 per episode, ten times more than the average annual UK wage. Who is this man? He is none other than India's number one actor, Mr. Shah Rukh Khan.
King Khan has reportedly signed a contract to host the third season of Kaun Banega Crorepati, which was initially anchored by Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan. Khan will record just fewer than 120 shows over 2 years for Star TV, starting from early 2007.
I was talking to a friend of mine and she said that this money should be given to Kalihandi, Orissa. Can someone imagine how much a difference it could make for them? Even half the amount could go a long way. Does Shah Rukh Khan really need this much money? How much does one person with a family need to live on for life?
Getting back to my point, the world has gone crazy! Why on earth would someone pay someone so much money? Yes, Yes, Yes, I know it's purely business, and the people paying Shah Rukh Khan this much will make double or treble back, but this is insanity. For Shah Rukh Khan, it sets him up for life; it makes his life more comfortable than it is already. It gives him more money than Amitabh Bachchan could ever dream about. And above all it gives him an edge over the legend. After all, it's all about that thing you call… Ego! And for men, the bigger the ego, the bigger the what you call it.
What are your thoughts on this deal? What should Shah Rukh Khan do with the money? Should he keep it or give it to charity? Should he have been given this much money in the first place? What, in your opinion, would be the ideal sum of money for him to anchor the show? Does this deal have any effect on Shah Rukh Khan's film star status? Is he about to retire from movies, and is he using this medium to continue his career? Has he got one over the Bachchans with this deal?
