BENIKA BOHAT KUCH JAANTII HAI

Benika Deepak
Multi-faceted is probably the first word that comes to mind when you meet Benika Deepak, a resident of Thakur Village. A university topper in MD Naturopathy, Benika has also been a student of classical dance at the Bharatiya Kala Kendra, Delhi. Infact, it is this passion that paved her foray into the acting world in TV.

"While in Delhi, someone noticed me during my dance recitals and offered me my first role Mariada, which was aired on DD in 1999," she states. She then shifted to Mumbai to pursue acting and today plays the role of a journalist in Kituu Sab Janti Hai on Sahara One. "I love the role of an idependant thinking woman that I play in it," she says.

Fortunately, Benika says she was not subjected to the trials other strugglers in this profession face.

"When I came to Mumbai, I started doing theatre. I was very fortunate to get a chance to work with prominent directors like Nadira Babbar and Bharat Dabholkar. Infact, with Nadiraji's play I got lucky. Initially, Juhi Babbar was supposed to play the role. But her career in Bollywood was doing well and I bagged the role instead," she explains.

Subsequently, she was flooded with various other offers from TV. "I did a string of serials which included Shakti, Bhabhi, Shaka Laka Boom Boom, Rishtey, etc."

Her contribution to the world of telefilms has also been significant. "I have worked with Pankaj Parashar and other reputed directors. In fact I have a soft spot for telefilms, because you know exactly what the turn of events will be. Whereas in serials, one can never preempt what will happen," she says.

But when asked to choose her favourite, she says it's neither telefilms nor serials, but a Marathi film called Saat Chya Aat Gharat in which she plays the lead. "It's my favourite because it has been my most challenging role till date. It deals with the issue of rape and the personal victory of a girl," she says.

But why would a qualified naturopath want to be an actor? "Acting is my passion but I also practice naturopathy and have a limited clientele," she says.

So what has been her major high in this career? "Recognition," she quips, adding, "I was once in London for Bharat Dabholkar's A Funny Thing Called Love, when someone kept calling me Anuradha, which is my screen name in Deepak Tijori's telefilm Tum Hi To Ho. I had no idea that the telefilms were so popular in the UK."
