Chapter Eleven - The Dinner Table
It seemed as though it was evening by the time I got out of bed. I sat up and grimaced at the slight pain from the burn. I took the blanket off myself and got off the bed. Then I slowly walked out of my room and checked the hallway; it was empty. So I walked towards the one room which I hadn't entered yet...Adi's room. I knocked on it, but there was no response.
"Adi?"
I called out his name but still no response. So I knocked one last time.
"Madhubala."
I turned my head to the left to see RK standing there with his arms crossed while leaning against the wall. His secretive eyes were directly on me. I knew his eyes held some secret concerning me, but he refused to make it clear as to what that secret was. I turned my body in his direction and stepped forwards while crossing my arms at the same time.
"I don't think your name is Adi."
"I don't think I asked you what my name is."
I tried to stare into his eyes but he made it difficult with his piercing look. I had to look away, so I shook my head at the same time to make it seem as though I was annoyed.
"He went back to work."
"I didn't ask you Mr. RK."
"Rishabh."
"Huh?"
"The name's Rishabh."
"Rishabh?"
"Rishabh Kundra. Don't wear it out."
He smirked and walked into his room, leaving me as baffled as ever in the hall. Rishabh? I still couldn't remember having ever made any contact with any Rishabh Kundra in the past. So if I didn't know who he was...why was he after me? What could I possibly have to do with him? Nothing made sense. I was confused...and I felt that was what he wanted, hence him telling me his name out of the blue. I followed him into his room and saw him standing there with his back towards me. He had his hands in his pockets, which made me assume that he was waiting for me.
"Did I say you could come in?"
"I want a watch."
He turned to face me with a raised eyebrow.
"A watch?"
"Yeah. You know, those things you tell time with? I like knowing what time of the day it is."
He looked down at his watch and then back up at me.
"6:47pm. Oh, that reminds me, it's almost dinner time Miss Madhubala."
"Are you kidding me? I almost died this morning and you want me to make dinner?"
"Well I don't plan on starving. Dinner. Now."
"Under one condition."
"You can't place conditions."
"Watch me. I'll only make your dinner if you provide me a watch."
"That's it?"
He undid the watch on his arm and threw it at me unexpectedly. I managed to catch it before it hit the ground and then looked up at his smirk.
"Keep it, I can get plenty of those."
There was no way I was going to thank him, so I turned to leave his room.
"Dinner better be served by the time Adi's home. You have twenty minutes."
Twenty minutes?! I had to make a meal for two guys within twenty minutes. There was no way I'd be able to cook Indian food within twenty minutes...so that left western. I quickly rushed towards the kitchen after placing his watch on my wrist. It was a big watch and kept sliding down my arm, so by the time I got to the kitchen, I decided it'd be best for me not to wear it. I took off the watch and looked around the kitchen. While working in an orphanage, I had only had the job of looking after the little orphans...but I never got kitchen duty. I knew how to make sandwiches though. So I searched through the huge kitchen for possible things to place in the sandwiches. In the end, they turned out to look pretty good. It took me fifteen minutes according to RK's watch, which meant I had five minutes to spare. I decided to set up the table for the three of us while thinking that if I could get both brothers in front of me, I could possibly get some answers. So I ran towards the dining area and set it up as quickly as I could. As I was placing down the last plate, I heard footsteps. I turned my head to the right to see RK and Adi standing side by side. It wasn't until I saw them side by side, that I realized how similar they actually looked.
"What's for dinner Madhy? I'm starving."
"You two can sit, I'll bring it out in a minute."
I watched as they exchanged a look as though they thought I was crazy. Then RK decided to speak up.
"I'm not sure if you know this or not, but this table hasn't been used in years."
I looked at the table and noticed it was in mint condition. It didn't look as though it had been used, so I figured he wasn't kidding.
"Then why is it here?"
"Every home has a dining table Madhy."
"I think we should eat here."
I looked at their faces and noticed RK's beginning to get a bit angered.
"Just give me the damn food Madhubala."
"No. First you two sit down, then I'll bring the food."
I watched as his nostrils began to flare and even Adi stepped back slightly. RK stepped forwards, causing me to step back. Then he did something I wasn't expecting. He grabbed the corner of the tablecloth and flung it, making all the dishes go crashing towards the ground. I instantly shot my hands up to my ears and my mouth shot wide open as he simply walked away as though he'd done nothing. I looked at Adi who didn't seem too surprised at the scene that had just unfolded in front of him.
"This was mom and dad's table. RK has refused to use it since they passed."
Adi didn't say another word. He simply turned and followed his brother upstairs. I stood there, disappointed with myself but also angry with RK. It wasn't like I had known his history and had known that he wouldn't eat at the table. I wasn't psychic. I wasn't a mind reader...though I wish I was. Nevertheless, I felt bad in the end. I knew what it was like to not have any parents; I knew what it felt like to be an orphan. Reminding the brothers of that was a terrible mistake on my end and I had to fix it. So I went back to the kitchen, picked up the tray with the two plates, and rushed up to Adi's room first. I knocked at his door and he opened it. I tried to look behind him into his room because I hadn't seen it yet, but it was dark. I looked back towards him and he laughed.
"Bedroom service Madhy?
"I felt bad..."
"Well, thank you."
He took one plate and entered his room again; closing the door behind himself. I stood there for a minute as I readied myself for my next stop. I walked towards the door and hesitated for a second but then ended up knocking on it. There was no response for a moment, so I knocked again. The second time I knocked, the door flung open and I saw a furious RK in front of me.
"What do you want?"
"I...I just came to give..."
He hit the tray out of my hands from below and it went flying into the air. Most of the sandwich landed in my hair, but that didn't bother me as much as RK's temper did.
"What's your problem RK?! I just came to give you your food. I had no idea that table had mem..."
He slammed the door in my face, leaving me standing there covered in lettuce and tomatoes. I guessed he had a thing for ruining clothes, after all...that's all he ever seemed to do when it came down to me. First my summer dress, then the maid's outfit, which was my fault but I decided to blame him, and finally the simplest anarkali I could find in the bag I had been given. I decided to yell at him through the door.
"Slamming your door doesn't make the problem disappear Mr. Rishabh Kundra!"
I was just about to bend over to clean up the mess when suddenly his door swung open again. He grabbed my arm and pulled me close. He looked at me with his piercing dark eyes.
"I can make the problem disappear."
He twisted my arm slightly, which pained me, so I grimaced as he continued.
"Never talk to me like that again."
"It...hurts..."
"Good."
He let me go and closed the door again as I rubbed at my arm. He irritated me. He got on my nerves. I hated him...but something about him still drew me in. I wanted to know his secrets. I wanted to know what he hid behind his tough guy facade. So many questions lurked my mind but no answers as of yet. I sighed and began cleaning up the mess he had made. He had assigned me as the new maid, so I was only doing my job.
I cleaned up the mess within minutes and then decided to head back to my room. I looked at the watch and saw that it read 8pm. I decided since there was a big day ahead, I should get some rest. So I cleaned up myself, dimmed the lights and laid down in the comfortable bed I had been provided with. It was only day two and it had been a long day. I was just glad it was over...for the time being.
