Reality TV can be very compelling and can make you emotional as Indians by nature are great exhibitionists ARCHANA PURAN SINGH There is nothing called reality television in India, everything is drama and fiction ANIRUDH PATHAK What you saw on Monday's Nach Baliye episode wasn't drama but it was real TV KUNAL KOHLI T he cry baby act of Shweta Ti- wari on Nach Baliye this Mon- day was reality television at its sentimen- tal best (or worst). With Shweta's husband Raja Chaudhary hospi- talised for liver infection, Shweta danced alone. It seems her husband had told her, "The show must go on." She used up at least 10 minutes of air-time weeping copiously. The others naturally sniffed into their hankies too. An actress from a popu- lar K-soap once said, "My woes don't end on screen. Because my producer thinks that the more I suf- fer, more the TRPs." So it's not just the soap shrimatis who weep but also those on reality televi- sion. Even the supposedly bindaas babe Raakhi Sawant sobbed on Bigg Boss to underscore the suf- fering of an item girl. Do tears mean TRPs? Comments Archana Puran Singh, who has also shed television tears on Jhalak Dikhlla Jaa, "I am not too emotionally demonstra- tive. But when I was on the dance show, I was moved to tears a couple of times. I was surprised at myself." She adds most women cry on TV because, "There is a flaw. Our directors and actors believe that to evoke a happy or a sad emotion in the audience, you need to make the characters laugh uproariously or weep hysterically. Indians are exhibitionists. We cry as much during weddings as we do at funerals." Writer Anirudh Pathak believes there is nothing called reality TV: "The rona dhona of the parents and the contestants at a talent hunt or a reality show is like a saas bahu drama, cleverly woven into the situation. There is nothing called reality tele- vision in India, everything is drama and fiction. "The Indian audience is very melodramatic. We love watching larger than life images. Tears and laughter are part of our lives and television is all about cashing in on these emotions." About Monday's episode, Kunal Kohli, one of the judges on Nach Baliye says, "What you saw wasn't drama. It was real TV. Shweta was feeling bad. It was not just circum- stances that forced her out of the show, but it also happened that Raja was ex- tremely unwell. All these factors added up. Every- body in the studio was moved and it was all for real." Evidently, the line be- tween the real and the fic- tional tears is blurring.

Emotions truly are such a large part of the Indian psyche!

Maybe some of us bring a different perspective because we've been a less demonstrative society such as the US, but sometimes tshe rona-dhona is truly nauseating. I always suspected the directors used the few clips of crying (carefully edited) to pull in the audience.

It's human tendency to sympathize with someone in distress... and it seems the directors and producers are cashing in on our sentiments. Reality shows mean SMSes these days. The more the audience sympathizes, the more the channels will be able to wield the SMS-card to generate revenues.

It's rather clever actually. Yet, at the same time, it is turning out to be rather a turn off for me. The directors need to work on their balancing act a bit more. I think most of us would rather see a few tears and then go on with the show, what say?

Yaaa, with Shweta going, their regular quota of glycerine will go waste, so poora ka poora bottle use kar diya, bahut jyada Shweta ko diya, thoda uske choreographer ko, thoda Raja ko, lots to Saroj Khan, phir pata nahi Raja ke doctor, nurse,etc....

Complete drama.

If her tears are genuine, she could have conducted herself with some more dignity. I understand that during the dance when the lines came "Rajeshwar aaya"... in the moment, you can get tearful, particularly the words at that stage are very emotive, but the whole drama on stage and then at his hospital..... too mcuh

well, we cannot question ones feeling and emotrions.
i personally think that these articles are not written to tell the trth but to gain money by playing with public emotions. if you seriously think, you will understand that not all but some reality shows are real but all articals are frawd. ITS just a means to produce controversies and hated in publics herat. so if you listen to me, i will just advise you not to comment on shweta's emotions, we don't know what kind a person she is from heart. lastly i have noticed that in INDIAN reality shows the people who have talent are thrown out of the show by public. public criise the 'Best only, and there is no doubt that shwta shweta was the best and honest(you have to agree on this).
you know what i think the public gets jeoulous of gud artist and i think thats a big shame for India nad the whole film industry.

Guys, normally I do find Shweta's crying acts annoying... but I really can't say that about last Monday. Her husband was not well... and she prolly WAS feeling bad. Why don't you guys just give her a break? It really isn't nice to laugh at others when you know they actually ARE in a bad condition.

i totally agree with amy....i have disapproved of shweta's tears in past, but please try to understand her situation this time guys.

some people are more emotional than others. some can choose to silently sob, and some just open up. as for conduct with dignity, please do not compare it to other contestants. we've seen them all break down when they were criticized by the judges. now imagine, if they are going through a personal crisis, like this one, where the husband is so unwell. how do we know how they would have reacted in such a situation?? maybe they would have cried a lot too.

also, blame the channel for showing all raja clips and making her cry more, they were doing it to increase their TRPs with it. she's not alone. if it was all about conduct with dignity, star could have edited out any crying portions. why did they show it? just to increase their ratings.

saroj ji likes her, and though she's a judge, she's human, so they showed her tears. no one said anything when all judges were visibly moved with T-B's performance...but all are suddenly tired to see saroj ji cry for shweta. i remember even last season, when Parmeet - Archana were leaving, Malaika and Saroj ji were quite upset.

What I am trying to say is, that just because we do not like the couple or person who is leaving, does not mean we can mock at them for crying, that too when they are going through a bad phase in personal life. How many of us would have said something if a deserving (and liked by all) couple got out at this stage, and judges cried with them??

i am just trying to present the other side of the story, that is all.

thanks 😊
