We have all been generally sympathetic to Emily. A young girl who fell for the charms of Mohit, a folly not uncommon in this age. He must have done a fairly good job of convincing her of his sincerity. When she realized she has been taken for a royal ride, it was too late and she was pregnant with his child. Mohit immediately took the denial mode and refused to have anything to do with her. The court orders compelled him to come out in the open. Now all this is history. I am going to to examine the pros and cons of the different options available before Emily.
Option1
1. She tries to please the RP with SurYa's help, gets the approval of Maasa and marries Mohit . The problems in this option
a) A person like Mohit who did not stand by her side in her hour of need is unlikely to be a supportive husband in future.
b) Bhabo may not agree to Court marriage and unless that is done under Special marriage Act the marriage in the eyes of law is illegal if Emily does not convert.
c) Having been brought up in a liberal atmosphere, it may not be easy for her to adjust to Rathi household as she may not possess other skills like Sandhya to impress Bhabo.
d) Her ability to pursue her religion, maybe go for the Sunday Mass may not be easy in the Rathi parivar setup. Sandhya got the approval to go to college but has been so bogged down by problems that she is hardly able to go. Same may be the case with Emily. Be it work or eating the non veg food of her choice it may be difficult for her to manage.
Option 2
Emily decides to go against her religion and aborts. Abortion is strictly illegal in Roman Catholicism.
a) Her parents and relatives may not be supportive.
Option 3
Emily decides to do it alone. Goes to the court, files for maintenence and becomes a single mother
a) In a conservative society such as ours it may not be easy. She will be subject to a lot of taunts
b) Right from the child's school admission father's name will be asked for and she may not get the respectability she needs.
c) Her remarriage may or may not happen. It is not easy to get a man in India with another man's child in arms.
d) Mohit becomes scot free by paying a monetary compensation and can remarry and get a fat dowry from a Marwari girl. Public memory in a boy's case is short and forgiving. Will it be fair to Emily?
e)Life can be quite lonely as Emily is just in her early 20s
Option 4
Emily dumps the child on the RP and gets along with her life.
a)Is it easy to give away your child and not see it ever. Can a mother do it ?
Option 5
Emily gives away her child for adoption.
a) Can a mother do it ? Will not the guilt of punishing a new born for its father's deeds kill her ?
b) Mohit again gets away scot free.
Option 6
She converts to Mohit's religion.
a) Grossly unfair on the girl to expect her to give up what she has been brought up with.
b) Question that why Mohit doesn't do it can be asked.
I know the CVs will take option 1 and show Maasa and Khap conceding with Sandhya's persuasion. An option which to my mind cannot happen in the India we live in, as in realistic terms it would lead to a total social boycott of RP as Bhabo rightly pointed out. Now as viewers which option appeals to you the most. Pour in your thoughts.
