A little note - Khushi has a vital part to play in the story, but she shall not be introduced atleast for the next two or three chapters. :)
Interlude 1 - Born to Die
Late into the night, a man leans into the river, his nose touching the rippling surface of the water. A drop of tear, from his eye, mingles into the black river.
"Il tuo sacrificio non sar vano, il mio bambino"
(Your sacrifice will not be in vain, my child)
The man stands up, ignoring the gravel which sticks to him to like moths to light. He walks a few steps, the tears openly streaming down his face. It is strange sight to the passerbys. The relatively clean man, with gravel on his knees, walking down aimlessly around a road, with nothing but tears. The think it is money trouble.
If only they knew.
The moonlight shines onto the man, deep in thought. The tears have long run dry. She was his daughter, and she had died for the greater good. The lord would give her a place in heaven, for his daughter had repented her sins.
The old man realises that he has aimlessly wandered into a dark road, with no light. It is not a familiar place to him, which is surprising, he knows the town like the back of his hand.
He suddenly feels cold, as if he has been stuck in a freezer. The next moment, holes appear all over his body. Blood spurts out of his nose, his eyes, like little streams breaking away from a large river. He makes odd noises, like he is being crushed by some invisible force, and falls down dead.
Miles away, a hand, illuminated by the grimy lamplight, laughs and throws the voodoo doll away.
