Chapter 17:
Arnav headed home that evening, after having spent a day lost in his own thoughts, trying to figure out how to solve the tangled mess that he himself had finally created. After a lot of reflection, and very little work actually being done, Arnav had realized what he would have to do, knew how he could win Khushi back. It wouldn't be easy, but it should work…hopefully. He unknowingly crossed his fingers on the steering wheel, "This has to work Arnav," he muttered to himself, "You have to admit your feelings to Khushi, actually have her realize what she means to you. But…but…why do I always end up acting like a 15 year old guy, with no control over his hormones" he rolled his eyes as he recollected the previous two times he had literally just jumped Khushi. Women like to be wooed. Remember how much wooing Shyam had to do before Di finally agreed to marry him? He smirked, thinking about the late night conversations when Shyam would rant about how annoying his sister was, how he had spent so much time at his local florist's that they knew him by name and his order by heart! Arnav had teased Shyam so much when he declared fervently that daffodils were the flower for Anjali, because her smile lit up his life just like the bright yellow daffodils lit up a room!
"That was a bit much. You're not going to do that for Khushi, Arnav. No. You're the head of AR, and saying lines as cheesy as that? I hope that's not what Khushi wants." he groaned out loud, nearly resting his head against the steering wheel out of sheer frustrations before the honking from the cars around him jolted him back to the road. "Time to focus on the driving Arnav. You can think about Khushi all you want later tonight, but for now, let's concentrate on getting home alive."
****
Arnav seated himself at the head of the dinner table later that night, watching for a few minutes as the rest of the family was immersed in their own dinner table conversations. Di was fussing over Adi, who was sitting right next to him, never wiling to sit too far away from his role model, his superman, Arnav mamu. Akash was trying to get Payal to eat some vegetable, because it's good for the baby, and Nani, who was sitting across from him, was the clearly only pretending to listen to Manorama's endless chatter about some Mrs. Sharmaji, and a Mr Malhotra. Shyam was the only one actually paying attention to Arnav, watching him thoughtfully. When Arnav caught his eye, he quirked an eyebrow up at his brother-in-law, as if asking him if he needed any help, if he had made any progress from the conversation they had had in Arnav's office earlier that day, but Arnav merely shook his head, a confident smile appearing on his face as he finally put is spoon down, and cleared his throat.
It was time.
"Nani, Di, Akash….everyone?" He called for their attention, and everyone quieted down, turning towards him with an expectant look on their faces. He paused for a second, taking a deep breath as he mentally reassured himself that this was the right step to do, before he began to speak.
"I love Khushi, and I want to marry her. Nani, what do you think about having Khushi as another daughter-in-law, for the Raizada family?"
Time seemed to freeze as the expressions on everyone's faces didn't change. The only sign he had that everyone had actually heard what he said was the sound of spoons clanking onto the table, falling to the ground. Shyam just blinked slowly – twice - as if he was trying to process what Arnav had just said. Anjali, Payal and Akash, simply grew silent, especially Anjali having an extremely confused expression on his face. And Nani, the one person from whom Arnav's eyes didn't move, she just watched him silently, not saying a word, her face remaining expressionless.
Arnav broke the silence after what felt like hours, unable to stand the tension that he could now feel pervading through the room. It hadn't seemed like it would be complicated when he thought about it earlier. Well, he was prepared to argue with everyone, ready to fight and defend his decision, but he expected them to all to show some kind of reaction to his words!
"Woh…Nani, I really love her and I know you might be thinking that I've known her for so long, but why have I only realized now, but I don't know. It might have been the fear of losing her, or something, but Khushi means the world to me, and I want only her to be my wife. I know that you want me to get married, and you might even have another woman picked out for me, but I really hope that you do approve of Khushi – after all, she's family already, right?" he says, quietly this time, his voice a lot more hesitant as he didn't get the desired response from the family.
Anjali speaks up softly, a little smile on her face, "You know Arnav, about Anand and Khushi?" she starts saying, but Nani chooses that moment to step in, interrupt Anjali's words, as she asks Arnav about Anand. "Khushi is almost engaged, Arnav. To Anand. Did you already forget that detail? Does she want to marry you?"
Akash's jaw dropped upon hearing his grandmother's words, as he thought back to the phone call that they had received earlier.
Precap:
"Am I doing the right thing, marrying him Kripa?" Khushi asked her friend, biting away at her fingernails anxiously.
"That's up to you to decide Khushi. You need to decide if time and space away from him will solve your problems, or if there's more to it than that. It has to be the right decision for you, one not I, nor anyone else will be able to decide."
