Ghulam Ali has charmed ghazal lovers for more than four decades.

Ghazal maestro in town

By Dr Mandar V Bichu

For the fifth year in succession, Signature Events brings ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali to the UAE soil.

The concerts, to be held on November 10 and 11 in Abu Dhabi and Dubai respectively, will see the master crooner render his popular ghazals. Personal favourites that have been specially handpicked by Ali himself will be belted out too.

It's believed that Ghulam Ali's genius lies in his technique of inventing tunes and then innovating it from that point. Agreed that none of his ghazals are easy-going, simplistic or populist fares. But therein lies his charm.

Each one is laced with intricate aalaps, murkis and taans. His voice caresses the words, bringing out each and every poetic nuance and in the process, imprinting them on listener's mind.

Chupke Chupke Raat Din, Dil Mein Ik Laher Si Uthi Hai Abhi, Roya Karenge Aap Bhi and Tumhare Khat Mein provide ample proof to this.

Furthermore, his singing is erudite and elegant; at the same time it is exciting and enchanting. No wonder he has been hailed by both the connoisseur as well as the commoner.

So be there to witness an artiste who revels in live acts. "Performing in front of an audience is my favourite way of singing. The response and reactions are instantaneous. That appreciation gives me the greatest creative satisfaction." confesses Ghulam Ali in an interview with e+

################################################

I had the good fortune of watching his show in Abu Dhabi...he is a genius!

He is an amazingly humble and warm man. Some of his ever popular renditions like "hungama hai kyu barpa" have become timeless...I didnt know that this one was based on Raag darbari...

He requested the audiences to bring along the younger people to listen as listening is learning in case of classical music..

What a man!👏

He has been a judge on many of the SGMP shows!

Birth: 1940
Birthplace: Kaleke , Pakistan
Profession: Playback Singer, Bollywood.

Ghulam Ali, the singing sensation has enthralled audiences all over the world for almost four decades now.His "Chupke Chupke Raat Din Aasoon Bahana Yaad Hai...." whose words still haunt. And the man behind that voice still stays as elusive as he ever was.His background as a Thumri singer makes him an exceptional ghazal singer. Ghulam Ali can easily be termed as the most versatile ghazal singer ever.

Again, owing to his immense popularity, some of his ghazals have been used in the Indian hindi movies. His popular ghazal "Chupke chupke raat din.." has been used in the movie Nikaah featuring Raj Babbar and Salma Aghaa. Moreover, many of the hindi film songs have been "inspired" from some of his ghazals. "Thodi si jo pi li hain, chori to nahi ki hain" from Namak Halal (Ghazal - Hungama hain kyon barpa) as you would recognize, is one them.

Ghulam Ali produces only a few albums a year , concentrating more on his live concerts. For his live concerts, usually the accompanying musical instruments are harmonium and tabla. The musical instruments such as sarod, sitar, santoor often complement him, but it is his voice which rules, and not the instruments.

Asha, Ghulam Ali to sing together

Courtesy: IndiaFM
Tuesday, October 10, 2006

After nearly two decades, singers Asha Bhosle and Ghulam Ali are coming together to sing a couple of Ghazals. The Ghazals will be a part of the music album of Ghulam Ali's son, Amir Ali. Amir has composed the songs and decided to get the two legends together again. The album is yet to be titled and will have 10 songs. The lyrics are light and romantic.

The last time we heard these two legends singing together was for an album called Meraj-E-Ghazal which was about 20 years back. .

Ghulam Ali

Ghulam Ali (1940-) is a famous Pakistani ghazal singer.

Ghulam Ali was born in the village of Kaleke, Sialkot, Pakistan in 1940 (that time India). He belonged to a musical family, his father was a vocalist and sarangi player who gave him early training. At the age of 15, Ghulam Ali became a disciple of the legendary classical singer Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, who was a master of the Patiala Gharana to which Ghulam Ali also belongs. His training was provided mainly by Bade Ghulam Ali Khan's three brothers: Barqat Ali Khan, Mubarak Ali Khan, and Amanat Ali Khan, in Lahore. All these great teachers of classical music taught him the finer details of classical music and his solid foundation of classical music included studying Thumri and learning to sing raagas. He started singing for Radio Lahore in 1960. Ghulam Ali's father named him "Ghulam Ali" after Bade Ghulam Ali.

Along with singing ghazals, Ghulam Ali composes music for his ghazals too. His compositions are raaga-based and sometimes include a scientific mixture of raagas. A raaga is a scientific, precise, subtle and aesthetic melodic form with its own peculiar ascending and descending movement consisting of either a full seven note octave, or a series of six or five notes (or a combination of any of these) in a rising or falling structure called the Arohana and Avarohana. He is known for blending gharana-gaayaki into ghazal and this gives his singing the capability to touch hearts. He beautifully sings Punjabi geets too. Most of his punjabi geets have been extremely popular. Though from Pakistan, Ghulam Ali remains as popular in India as in Pakistan. On being questioned about Pakistani pop groups, Ghulam Ali replied, "frankly I am really bewildered at their style of singing. How can you sing a song by running and jumping around the stage? The stage is meant for performing not for acrobatics."
