Chapter 52
Geet entered the design department still mumbling to herself looking upwards periodically. She was complaining to her Babaji about Maan and his teasing and had started her mumbling the minute she cut the call.
Meera saw her and started laughing "Arre Geet, who are you talking to?"
Geet froze. She had been caught, and that too by her boss. She didn't dare look upwards to her Babaji again.
Before Geet could think of anything to say, Meera said "probably cursing Pinky and myself for teasing you...haina?"
"No, Meera. Definitely not" Geet replied flashing her a smile before sitting down at her desk. "Thank you Babaji. At least she didn't say..." but her thought was interrupted when Meera said "Then you must be cursing that poor romeo who sent you the flowers? Wo, sorry, not romeo, but your good friend. Haina?"
Geet tried to deny it, but her furious blushing didn't convince Meera. Meera could see that Geet was becoming uncomfortable, so decided to drop the subject, but not before saying, "You know, when Yash and I started dating, it was very much like this...when asked, I would deny all knowledge of him...if he sent me flowers or chocolates, I would get furious with him...and when he didn't, I got furious with him... And I used to blush a lot...and still do" Meera giggled leaving Geet to her thoughts and work.
After half an hour Meera returned and called a departmental meeting. She had just had a teleconference with Maan and Yash about a new project being launched.
"Right guys. I have some news. We have won a new luxury housing project for NRIs and foreigners. MK and Yash are working on finalising the plans and we have been tasked with coming up with some new designs. We have quite a generous budget and we have been asked to think outside the box when it comes to the look and feel of these houses. What I propose is that all of you work independently to come up with some concepts, with sample furnishings and colour schemes. The client will look through all the proposals and select the one he wants. The lucky designer will then get a chance to work with MK on this entire project. This is a great opportunity, so I suggest you all get stuck in." Meera said.
There was an excited buzz in the department as everyone starting talking about the project. "This is truly a great opportunity" Geet thought elatedly "I have so many ideas, but I need to refine them. I really want to win this, so I can learn from the best. Imagine, me working alongside MK!".
"There is one catch, however" Meera said, silencing the audience. All faces looked at her anxiously.
"There is a tight deadline. We only have a week to submit the designs." Meera continued. There was a collective groan from the department.
"But I have faith in you guys. I know you can do it" Meera said trying to raise morale. She knew the timeline was very tight, but between them, they should be able to come up with at least 1 workable design that the client would like...wouldn't they?
Meera scanned the faces before her. All of them had gone pale at the thought of the deadline...all except Geet. She seemed to be even more enthusiastic. Meera went over to check whether Geet had misunderstood. "Geet, you realise that you only have a week, don't you?" Meera asked.
"Yes" Geet said smiling at Meera who looked puzzled.
"Does it not bother you or make you anxious?" Meera queried
"No, Meera. Not at all. Actually I thrive on deadlines and tight timelines. Also, I desperately want to work with MK, so for me, the timeline is irrelevant" Geet said cheerfully, walking back to her desk to start thinking about her design.
Meera watched her leave, and thought "strange girl...not strange...unusual...yes, definitely unusual"
It was 6.55 pm when Pinky came by Geet's desk. "Geet pack up, it's home time" she said.
Geet looked up at Pinky and said"Huh?"
"Geet, it's time to go. Look around you. Everyone else has gone and you are here alone"
"Wo, I was busy with my new design...I didn't realise. What time is it?" Geet asked, stretching her arms over her head to relax her muscles.
"6.55pm exactly my dear...now get your things and let's go. I am starving" Pinky whined
"6.55!" Geet exclaimed and stood up. She was getting late for her date...no not a date...dinner, yes dinner with Maan. "And if I am late, Babaji, he will come here...and say or do something" Geet thought anxiously shaking her head."I better go and meet him...but what will I say to Pinky?"
Pinky saw Geet looking pale and thoughtful all of a sudden.
"What happened, Geet?" Pinky asked with concern.
"Wo Pinky...I just remembered I have an appointment...um...with the...um...my...um...ha...dentist. Ha, yes, my dentist"
"Kya???" Pinky asked
"Wo, I had some pain in my tooth and made an emergency appointment. I forgot to tell you. You go home, and I will see you later" Geet said, gathering her stuff and pushing Pinky towards the door.
Geet watched Pinky leave then picked up her phone. She dialled his number.
"Hello", he answered in his rich baritone voice "Not trying to ditch me are you, Mrs Khurana?"
Her heart missed a beat when he said Mrs Khurana and she paused before replying steadying her heartbeat. "No...wo...I am running a bit late...just a few minutes, so no need to come into the office...okay?" Geet said hesitantly.
"Okay. I am waiting outside for you...don't make me wait too long" Maan said smoothly
"Kya??? Directly outside the main gate?" Geet cried out, not hearing the second part of his sentence.
"No, not directly in front of the gate" Maan replied, sensing the panic in her voice. He explained to her that he had parked a few hundred yards to the left of the gate. "I did that so that no-one from my office would see...I don't need to be teased...that is my job" he thought.
Geet cut the call and ran into the washroom. She checked her appearance, fixed her unruly hair and applied some lip gloss. When she was finished, she said to herself hitting her forehead gently,"Jhalli, I don't know why you care what you look like, it's only Maan you are meeting...not MK"
