Chapter 15: Epilogue Learning to Breathe
He walked in after a long night at work and smiled as he saw his wife sleeping peacefully on their bed. He knew that he should have left early, but he didn't have to chance, after all he had a lot of planning to do for the morning. Rey had thought that he wanted to be a choreographer and wanted that as his career choice, but his job as a doctor was something that he cherished a lot. He had given dancing as a career a chance, and he loved it and he still did it part time, but he didn't want to give up on helping people. Just like him Taani had given her singing a chance, and was an established singer, but her career path laid in making children happy. She worked for orphanages, giving those children hopes and dreams and giving them hefty amounts of charity to secure their future. Rey shook his head from his thoughts and walked over to where his wife was sleeping and saw that her blanket was barely covering her and was half way off the bed and although he thought she looked extremely cute, this habit of hers scared him to death, he never wanted her to get sick because of the cold. Shaking his head he quickly bundled her up, not wanting her to get sick.
Once he got dressed for bed he instantly found his place on his bed next to the one person that was his entire world. Winding his arm around her waist he slowly pulled her closer to him snuggling her warmth with his. Kissing her head softly he thought about his plans for tomorrow, it was their anniversary. A year ago tomorrow he had officially marked her as his, and she had made him the happiest man alive by accepting him with all his faults. And he was planning on making tomorrow the second best day of her life, knowing that their wedding was her first. Smiling he tightened his grip on Taani and fell asleep next to his angel of love.
In the morning when Taani woke up she realized that her husband was missing. Usually he slept so late that she would have to wake him up for work. Confused she scrunched her nose as she saw a note placed on the nicely made side of his bed. Opening the note she read, "Hey beautiful, I didn't have the heart to wake you up when you looked so adorable sleeping. Happy anniversary my beautiful angel, I've planned something special for you today. Please put on what I have taken out, everything including the earrings and then come to the kitchen where you'll find me." Taani smiled at the note and eagerly got up wondering what Rey had planned.
Taani had showered and gotten out looking for what Rey had picked out and was pleasantly surprised to see the dress she wore on their first date, and the earrings he had gotten on her birthday that had complimented it. Even though she was surprised she put it on and went to the kitchen where she saw Rey dressed in jeans and a simple blue shirt. "Good morning." Rey came to her and kissed her on the cheek. Taani watched suspiciously wondering what her husband had up his sleeve. "Ready?" he asked her as she nodded excitedly as they both left.
Rey drove his car to where they were going and when they reached her heard Taani gasp and say, "Oh my god."
She turned to look at him her eyes wide open in disbelief and happiness. "How?" she asked wondering how Rey remembered.
"Our first date was here, our memorable moments were at this lake. We came at night that day and I wanted you to see how beautiful this lake is in the sunlight." Rey said chuckling as Taani bounced out of the car and walked noticing how different the meadow looked in the sun. The blue lights that light the pathway in the dark were now reflecting a shimmering clear gloss around the meadow. The flowers were white, perfectly decorating the meadow. The lake was beautiful, the sun shimmering the small waves in it.
Taani stopped when she saw a projector and a blanket by the sitting area. "Rey?" she asked wondering how he could make today any more special.
"I love you Taani, happy anniversary."Rey said as Taani turned around and hugged him. "Now this is my gift to you. Relieving our first date and relieving all of our moments with each other through this video." He said nervously as he pressed play.
Taani say the projector go on and saw Rey on screen saying, "Taani I've been working on this for a while for our anniversary and I want it to be completely special for you. The night we got married you said something to me. You told me that when I came into your life you learned to breathe again to let go of your regrets and mistakes and embrace your happiness and love, you learned to be happy again and I have always remembered that. So today I want to tell you that you have taught me to breathe as well. You taught me to be a better man, to be happy again. And because of that I want you to relieve all of our moments with this song."
Taani looked at Rey sitting next to her and placed a gentle kiss on his lips. "I love you." She said as Rey smiled. She heard the strumming of a guitar and saw a picture come up. It was of her and Rey in Goa, on the beach smiling with their arms around each other.
I could use a fresh beginning too
All of my regrets are nothing new
I never, never thought that I would fall like that
Never knew that I could hurt this bad
More pictures came up, from their Dance Off in college, to Valentine's Day, to just regular pictures they took because they felt like it.
I'm learning to breathe
I'm learning to crawl
I'm finding that you and you alone can break my fall
Taani's eyes teared up as she saw all of their beautiful moments captured on screen going with the song. She chocked up even more when the screen changed from their pictures to Rey strumming and singing, "So this is the way that I say I need you, this is the way that I say I love you, this is the way that I say I'm yours, this is the way, this is the way,"
A collage of their pictures came up on screen and Taani couldn't help but throw her arms around her husband, the man that made not just their anniversary, but everyday of her life special.
That I'm learning to breathe,
I'm learning to crawl,
I'm finding that you and you alone can break my fall,
I'm living again, awake and alive,
I'm dying to breathe in these abundant skies.
Rey smiled into her embrace and whispered, "Thank you for teaching me to breathe again. Taani I want to make you happy everyday of forever, and I want you to know how much I love you."
"I love you Rey," Taani said pulling back with tears in her eyes, "You make me the happiest woman alive. I don't want anything else but you."
"Happy anniversary." Taani said crashing her lips against Rey's who eagerly responded.
When they pulled back Rey chuckled slightly and said, "I love you too."
"I have a present for you." Taani said shyly as she looked up towards the sky enjoying the sunlight on her face.
"What?" Rey asked excitedly making Taani laugh, some things hadn't changed since college.
Taani grabbed Rey's hand and placed it on her stomach, "How do you feel about being a daddy Doc?" she asked as a small smile spread on her face when she saw Rey's shocked look.
Rey shot up as he gaped at her, his mouth opening and then shutting with no words coming out. Worried Taani got up and put her hand on his arm. "Rey?"
"You're pregnant." Rey managed to spit out, "We're pregnant." He said as Taani nodded tense. "Oh my god!" Rey said with the biggest smile on his face. "We're pregnant!" he said excitedly as he pulled Taani into a tight hug. "We're going to have a family." He said smiling into Taani's hair.
Taani smiled and said, "We're going to have a family, and we're going to be the best parents this kid could ever ask for."
Taani felt Rey smile into her hair as he whispered, "We really made it."
"We really did make it Rey," Taani whispered into his chest smiling at their past and their future that would only be filled with love. "We learned to breathe as one."
