Veterans Day/Remembrance Day

On November 11, people from various countries stop, and think about the soilders that died in World War I, trying to protect and defend their respective country.

Since on I-F, there are lots of people from the countries that have Veterans Day/Remembrance Day, I have made this post. In this thread please join us while we hope that the souls of the people who died, rest in peace, and pay tribute to every soilder that ever risked his/her life.

Remembrance Day is held in Australia, Canada, Colombia, UK and Ireland, while Veterans Day is held in USA. The general idea is the same.

Poppies

Poppies are sold every year as an act of remembrance to fallen soldiers at war.

In England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland the poppies are the flat Earl Haig variety with a leaf, and in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Scotland the poppies are curled at the petals with no leaf.

For people living in the countries that have Veterans Day/Remembrance Day, I'm sure you've read/heard the below many times, but because the poem is very significant to Nov 11, I'm posting it anyway.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.

- John McCrae

Lest we forget...
