Chapter 30

Aman finally found Yash sitting on the platform opposite the market. When he looked closely he could not bear to see his friend in that state. His clothes were crumpled with his hands and face covered with soot. He looked downright filthy, miserable and shabby and utterly devastated.

He had been waiting for Yash to come for the meeting in the morning. His father had finally handed over the duties for this particular phase to him. The hour passed and then another with no signs of Yash anywhere and neither getting a call from him to inform of any delay or cancellation. It was then he had started to worry. He then tried calling up Yash on his mobile. Unfortunately he was getting network busy signal. He tried calling the hotel but there too he was not able to connect. He could not understand what was going on.

Just then his secretary burst into the cabin and told him about the bomb blast that had occurred in Sarojini market, she had said that she was just passing through the lobby area of the office where the television was switched on and got to know about it.

Aman's mind then supplied him of the tit bit he had heard from Aarti the previous night at the party. Her laughing face still clear in his mind as if she was right in front of him.

"Yes I love shopping in crowded markets and wading to heaps of stuff to sieve out what I want in the end. Malls do not offer me the treasure hunt sort of an experience"

"I will be going to Sarojini market tomorrow when Yashji would be attending your meeting"

"Oh My God Aarti" Aman said it out loud.

Aman had immediately left the office in hunt of finding Yash and Aarti. The city was in total chaos. Traffic jams and total mayhem everywhere. Somehow after a long time Aman was able to reach Sarojini market. The situation there was tragic. Smoke still puffing out and fire engines trying to douse the fire out. Police had cordoned off the area and ambulances were present on stand by.

He could see many people waiting for their loved one to come out as rescue operations were going on in full swing.

Aman tried calling Yash again. This time he got a ring but then he suddenly got the message that it was switched off.

He cursed his luck just as he was about to keep his mobile back in his pocket, his cell phone rang again. It was Suraj Pratap Uncle's number. He immediately received it.

"Thank god the call connected...Beta tell me...tell me that Yash and Aarti are safe" those were the first words he heard on the cell from the other side.

Aman did not know how to answer that.

"Uncle...Yash did not turn up for the meeting today. Aarti was supposed to do shopping at Sarojini market as you might be knowing and that is where the blast took place. I suppose Yash might have come to drop her off on the way to the meeting.

I have just reached here. Till now I have found no sign of either of them. I will call you as soon as I have any more information uncle"

"Aman...Aman beta...we just saw the ghastly news on TV. My hands and legs have almost become paralyzed beta. I have got to know...got to know that both are safe only then only then I can get some peace of mind. We tried calling both their mobiles but we failed to make contact. We also tried calling their hotel but the calls are just not going through" SP said his voice conveying his fear induced frustration.

Aman was able to sense both the fear and panic in the older man's voice over the phone. He was himself feeling those emotions but tried to stay strong for the other's sake.

"Yes uncle the same happened for me too. I think the phone lines have been jammed. But now I was able to connect to Yash's mobile before I got the switched off message"

"Pankaj is going to book the first available flight to Delhi beta. But till then you you have the responsibility to keep us updated. I have contacts in the Police out there just like you might be having too. Just take all their help if needed. Will you do that for us beta?" said SP whose voice was breaking down in an effort to keep a check on his emotions which were on the verge getting the better of him. Years of discipline coming in aid for him in this hour of crisis.

"Don't think twice about it Uncle. I am sure both would be fine and the minute I get to know of anything I will inform you. I have full faith in Almighty...both of them would come out of this unharmed" Aman consoled SP though he was himself quivering with doubt on that matter seeing the burning market in front of his eyes.

"I pray to god what you have said is true. Take care beta we will be waiting for your call"

"Have faith uncle" Aman said and the call was cut.

Aman tried calling the hotel again just to confirm, finally the call connected and he was able to talk to the receptionist who had reiterated that the both Aarti and Yash had left the morning and had not returned still as their room was still locked.

With that Aman redoubled his efforts to find Yash. He had to be there somewhere. He tried calling Aarti's mobile the ring went on and on and he got the msg that the subscriber was unable to attend the call. He grew more worried with every passing second.

Oh God what am I going to tell Yash's family. How will I be able to talk to them again. Please help me God. Please help me.

It was then he spotted Yash huddled in a heap his hands holding his knees together and he was staring without blinking at the scene in front of him. He was totally oblivious to Aman. When Aman approached Yash he was hoping to get some reaction from him but Yash did not even acknowledge his presence. Aman got afraid on seeing Yash in that zoned out condition. He wanted to shake him up just so that he could snap out of it.

But before he could touch Yash the rescuers pulled out another body from the ashes on the other side.

Yash lifeless body immediately sprung into action. He got up and and ran across the road towards the body that was being kept on the stretcher and being taken towards the ambulance. Aman followed Yash.

"Aartiji...Aartiji..." Yash kept chanting as he got nearer. The police and the ambulance assistants tried to hold him back.

But he was too powerful for them and he finally took away the white cloth covering the body. The body was burnt beyond recognition. It could have been anyone man, woman it was impossible to make out by the naked eye.

"It's not her. It's not her. I knew it. I could never be her" Yash said with unshakable confidence which made Aman's heart go out to Yash. Yash being so sure of the fact made Aman to want to believe it too. But he knew he had to be the more realistic one here.

"I have got to find her. You people are too slow. She is somewhere in there. She is calling out to me. I have to find her, I have to save her" Yash turned away from the body and tried to get past the security but was caught before he could interfere with the work going on.

"Leave me, leave me you fools. I said leave me. My WIFE is in there. I have gotto to reach out for her" Yash struggled against two men who were unable to hold him back so more men joined to keep Yash at bay. But all were having a tough time to subdue him.

"Sir please control yourself. You have again come to interfere with our work. Why are you doing this again and again? Please please let us get on with it. We have heavy causality here. Even if your wife was here there is only very remote chance that she would have survived this. If not the bomb blast then the fire and if not the fire then the resulting smoke could have chocked her to death" the personnel told him in a matter of fact way. That enraged Yash like nothing else.

"Shut up. Just SHUT UP. Nothing has happened to her. I just know it. Just stop talking rubbish. You are just worthless incompetent bunch of jokers who do not know how to do their job. Let me in. I will find her myself" with that he pushed everyone away and tried to go in again.

Aman held him back this time. Yash did not look at him. He just saw him as another obstruction in his way to find out his Aarti.

"Let me look for my wife...PLEASE...I beg of you. Please... I know she is in there very much alive. Let me...let me just go. Why are you all stopping me? Please...please give me a chance to find her. I have to find her" Yash said his voice quivering and pushing away at Aman with all strength.

Aman did the only thing he could think of to stop him and slapped Yash hard on the face.Yash finally stopped. He kept looking at Aman.

"She wanted to hear me confess my love for her. I kept delaying, I kept teasing her. She was angry with me when she said good bye.

I did not even say what I so desperately wanted to tell her what she so wanted to hear. How could I do that? What was I thinking?

Please don't leave me Aarti. Please please come back to me. Come back to me PLEASE. I am sorry for not telling you how I felt. I am sorry. I was such a jerk Aarti. But please please do not punish me like this. I cannot bear it. I will die Aarti. I will just die if anything happens to you. I will just die. Come back to me.

I LOVE YOU AARTI. I LOVE YOU. I LOVE YOU" he screamed at the top of his voice.

With that Yash staggered back his feet unable to hold him any longer as he fell on his keens and tears started to pour out of his eyes.

Back in Bhopal

--------------------------

"Hurray mumma and papa are on their way home today evening" Payal said. The three children were on their way back from the school in the car.

"Yeah we will finish our dinner and be ready for them to come" Palak said who was equally excited as her other two siblings.

"Do you think they will like our gift?" Ansh questioned.

"Of course they will" Palak and Payal assured Ansh.

__________

"Why is everyone so quiet?" Payal whispered to her brother and sister once they had finished their dinner that night and assembled in the living room anticipating the arrival of their parents with bated breath.

"No they are still talking but in hushed voices. So that we cannot hear anything" Ansh corrected his sister.

"Are they hiding something from us?" Palak asked suspiciously.

Both Ansh and Payal made a face and moved their hands indicating that they did not have any idea.

"Anyway let us just finish our work on the gift shall we" Palak called her siblings along to add finishing touches to their gift.

"Do you know I heard Pankaj tauji too is going to Delhi suddenly? I saw him leave with is suitcase sometime back" Ansh said after sometime.

"Delhi must be a really magical place. Everyone seems to want to go there" Payal concluded.

"Do you think for our holidays this time we should go and visit Delhi instead of Mumbai?" Palak put forward a proposition.

"Now that sounds like a grand plan" Ansh and Payal agreed.

After what seemed like a long time the kids started to feel drowsy.

"Oh...my eyes are getting closed. I cannot hold back my sleep anymore. When are mumma and papa going to come back anyway? What is taking them so long?" Palak questioned.

"Me too feeling very sleepy and look Payal has already slept off" Ansh said in a disapproving voice looking at his sister who had slept off on the sofa itself.

"Silly girl always wants to sleep cannot even hold back even for this special day" Palak said just as a yawn escaped her.

The two of them tried to do battle with the onset of sleep but their tired little eyes closed and took them away to a dreamland far away from the harsh reality of what was happening around them.

Vidhi who was avoiding the kids finally came to them when she saw that all were asleep one next to the other on the sofa.

She just kept looking at them and then at the gift that they had placed on the table in front of them and tears started rolling from her eyes.
