MURDER CASE 01.01.26
Anjali dragged her feet to her room with numbness in her heart and heaviness in her gut. She had the papers given by Arnav in her hand and the contents were less than satisfactory. There was lot of money spent of jewellery, hotel room bookings, dinners and expensive gifts none of which she was recipient of. The dates went as far back as three years and she could remember that it was around same time when Shyam's financial difficulties had begun.
Arnav was never happy with Shyam given his background and the general way he presented himself. Shyam was a lawyer by profession and along with practicing the law he did several businesses on the side to gain more financial independence. When Anjali had come home in bridal wear with husband in tow, Arnav had rendered speechless. His grandmother had a small shock but they had all recovered and embraced the new member in the family. Arnav had no issues with his brother-in-law living with them. In fact he quite liked that arrangement.
She saw Shyam sitting on bed with papers surrounding him and probably doing some number crunching. When it came to Shyam, she liked to confront things immediately before it escalated to something else. It wasn't like him to hide things from her. They never hid anything from one another and this was a first. She walked into their room and locked the door behind her.
"I got this from Arnav," Anjali said and handed him the bunch of papers. He turned pale when he looked through the content.
"Anjali..." He trailed, unable to formulate a coherent response. Anjali felt betrayed and a knife twisted in her heart which made her to scream in pain.
"How could you?" She slapped him backhanded. Shyam jumped to his feet and held her hand trying to pacify her.
"I had to Anjali...for our sake," he said softly. She broke down and collapsed on her feet before Shyam had a chance to react. He slowly lifted her back to her feet and within a second she was hugging him tightly.
"Why is she doing this to us? We gave enough money, apartment, and job...what more can she ask for?" Anjali sobbed to his chest.
"Sheetal was the biggest mistake Anjali and we realized it eight years ago. Now we cannot undo the past or go back to the things the way it was. I will see how to curb this further," Shyam said sighing, threading his fingers in her hair.
"Let's tell Arnav. Let's tell him everything," she clutched his shirt tightly and yelled at him. She sounded so broken...so lost. But the cost would be too cruel for anyone in their family.
"No Anjali. Not anymore. We decided to tell him then but the things with Khushi happened. After which you know how Arnav has become. We can't tell him about Arav," Shyam said trying to bring rationality into the situation.
He had always successfully managed to display his weakness shamelessly in front of Arnav giving the younger man an upper hand. He knew that what he was doing was wrong but he loved Anjali too much to care about his own reputation in front of Arnav or anyone else for that matter.
"But the way he spoke about you today..." Anjali said, clenching her throat as it hurt her for being constricted far too tightly.
"I don't care what anyone talks about me. All I care about is you." He said it with such a conviction that her belly shook as an instantaneous chemical reaction. "We are not new to Sheetal's blackmailing schemes. I will try some external force this time to get her to back off."
"But what if she hurts Arav? What if she hurts my son?" Anjali let out a gut wrenching cry which only a mother makes when she is scared to death about her child's life. Anjali was no different in that moment. Shyam could feel her pain but the helplessness he felt in these moments over the situation made him wanting to punch the wall and experience the pain physically. He abhorred and loathed the situation they were in with all his breath when Anjali's son, no, their son could potentially be mishandled or their predicament when made public could stir another scandal which the family couldn't handle at this point.
"Sheetal is not going to harm Arav in any way, Anjali, you know that. She just wants money which I provided. She won't come back for more for at least a year. Don't worry about it, okay?"
"How frequently does she...contact you?" Anjali asked bitterly. She couldn't bring herself to say "blackmail".
"Once or twice a year. I promise you Anjali, I won't hide it from you again. Okay?" He said. She nodded numbly and rested her head on his chest. "We are just facing bad luck upon bad luck Anjali. Every time we decide to tell the complete truth to Arnav, something or the other keeps happening. It's as if we are in a badly written drama," he joked lamely. His heart swelled when he felt her chuckle on his chest.
"If it hadn't been for you...I don't know what would have happened to me," Anjali said breathing in on his shirt.
"We will get through this phase too Anjali...we always have." Shyam said closing his eyes and hoping for the phase to be already over yet.
They were too tired, too hurt and too let down by the decisions they had made in past. The situation had gotten out of hands and it was too late to tell Arnav what had been going on in his sister's life for the past couple of years.
Arnav was broken, sensitive and detached from the world to get across their story and come back in one piece.
They didn't need his blessing but only his understanding.
