Chapter 1
"Yes Mr. Khan! I don't deny the idea's brilliant but what I'm trying to say is, before we ask for funding we need to know who's interested in a dating platform like this. Why wouldn't they just create their own?" Zoya could barely disguise her exasperation.
She was referring to a social engagement technology platform that her friend, college mate and now potential business partner, Asad Ahmed Khan had designed during the summer break. It was his pet project. A great idea, but she wanted to ensure all the bases were covered before they seeded a venture.
Asad smiled at Zoya. She was irritated. Zoya Farooqui only referred to him as Mr. Khan when she was upset with him.
"Sshh⦠Zoee," he said in his deep voice. "We're at the library ā so keep it down. C'mon⦠let's get out of here and discuss it over coffee." He pulled her arm gently as he stood up and looked pleadingly at the beautiful girl sulking beside him.
They'd known each other for nearly eight years but it was only in the recent months that he'd noticed the devastating effect of Zoya's doe-shaped eyes and luscious lips on the male species, him included.
Zoya smiled. She couldn't stay mad at Asad for too long. Linking her arm in his, they walked out.
As they drank coffee and shared a donut, Asad reminisced about the years gone by.
They had first met at Columbia University, New York, both "fresh-off-the-boat" from India. Zoya had pursued economics and business studies, while he had graduated in Computer Science. Back then, she'd been the girl-next-door, and he ā the typical Indian geek. New York had changed all that. Of course, they'd lost touch when she'd gone to Boston to work at a digital media startup and he had headed to Seattle, to work with a software giant. But now, they were classmates at a full-time MBA program at the Stern School of Business.
"Why are you so quiet? Are you upset? We fight too often these days na? Asad, I really like the idea but we should have a proper business model and plan in place before we approach any angel investor," Zoya's husky voice, broke his train of thought.
She was a stunner now ā her hair was shorter, styled in layers that framed her oval face. Gone were the standard-blue jeans and colored tees. Her sense of style had reached a level of sophistication that made heads turn wherever she went. That she had the slender, tall frame of a model to carry it off, was the icing on the cake!
"Nothing, I was just thinking about how long it's been since we first met, and how much we've changed," Asad replied.
Zoya looked at Asad, eyebrows raised. Hmm⦠he sure had changed. The preppy look really suited him. That and all that running he did. At nearly six-feet, he was athletic and lean muscled. Like most girls, she had a thing for a square jaw and dimples! And those dreamy eyes⦠Asad was a gorgeous male specimen.
But she'd be the last to admit it. Romance was not on the list, after her one serious relationship that had ended badly! Plus, the course work at Stern was intense, to put it mildly. And now, with their new venture, it made no sense complicating their easygoing friendship.
"Hmm... major introspection, buddy?" Zoya teased. She wasn't comfortable with Asad in this mood. She tried changing the topic. "Hey ā I think I know how we can go about this āoffer this platform as a service, to any dating, matrimonial website or a special interest group that wants a social engagement platform!"
Asad's eyes lit up! He pulled her closer for a hug. "Bingo Zoee... that's it! Thank you!"
***
Nothing had prepared them for the crazy work around seeding a venture. All those late nights together, working as a team, playing devil's advocates to each other's ideas, pushing each other to do the best, getting new people on board, pitching to angel investors - it was heady!
Only the sexual undercurrent was hard to ignore. The more they fought their attraction for each other, the tougher it became to sweep it under the carpet. Stolen glances, accidental touching that only deepened their guilt⦠it was getting crazy, but they had so much going, so it hadn't made sense to act on it. And that often meant they'd vent their frustration, anger on each other. Sure, they'd gotten closer, but had they gotten too close?
***
Zoya would never forget that night. It was the best night of her life, the worst night of her life ā depending on how she looked at it.
They'd just returned to his place, after pitching to some potential investors. She'd thought it had gone well. Asad thought different. And another fight had ensued over dinner.
"Oh c'mon, Zoya ā this presentation was a big screw-up!" Asad nearly yelled, as he banged his fist on the table in frustration. "Admit it ā you didn't nail them."
She hated seeing Asad this way. Trying to lighten the mood, she'd walked over and leaned in to whisper, "Ah... but Asad I think I nailed you... you looked pretty convinced when I was presenting the plan." Then for effect, she'd run her index finger along his collar bone and trailed it down to his chest.
She hadn't been able to read the sudden change in Asad's expression. He'd smiled wickedly and retorted, "You can't nail me, Zoya... technically, it'd have to be me nailing you." Grabbing her finger gently, he'd closed his hand around her wrist.
"Seriously Asad? You and me?" she'd scoffed. In reality, alarm bells had been ringing in her head. Asad on edge talking dirty, was sending shivers down her spine. "You gotta be kidding!"
That had pushed him over the edge. He'd pulled her in, using his other hand to tilt her head so he could align his lips to hers. Their tongues had lashed at each other... warring was what they'd done a while now. Their breaths mingled, their hearts were beating to the same tempo ā they pulled apart for a second and he'd asked, "You want this, right?"
She tugged at his tie, and answered with a wild kiss, that had sealed the deal. He swept her in his arms and had taken her to his room.
Their lovemaking, like everything else about them, had been passionate and intense. Clothes ripped apart, love-bites that only heightened pleasure, her nails raking his back as his tongue drove her wild... her hand on his arousal, picking up pace till he'd pushed it away and thrust into her again and again slowly, only to quicken when she groaned, "Faster, faster."
As he pulled out one last time and thrust into her, their eyes had met briefly before her eyelashes fluttered and she'd cried out his name... she felt like she was in heaven, and then, he had joined her, spilling his seed in her. It was bliss.
The morning after, was definitely the worst.
They'd woken up in each other's arms, regretful and unsure. Then Zoya had cracked a joke as usual, lightened up the mood.
As they'd settled down for breakfast, trying to act buddy-like, Asad picked on something trivial and they'd fought again, and bitterly. So much for all that passion of the previous night!
Asad had been nasty! "Zoya, I pity the man who'll have to deal with you for the rest of his life! No wonder Kabir walked out on you!" The reference to her ex was hitting below the belt, especially when Asad knew how it had ended.
That was it! She wasn't going to take this sh** from him. Zoya had dressed up and within minutes, walked out, without a word.
Asad had regretted his words a little while later and had tried calling her several times. But she'd been too distraught with the news of her grandmother's death, and hadn't answered his calls. She had flown to India the very next day ā she had to see her Nani, the only person she'd truly loved.
