Part 48

Arjun ate his toast quietly… Again!!!

Romit, Rashi, Dadi were digging in their breakfast as if it was the most interesting thing in the world. For the first time in his life, Arjun felt that his family was boring. He was reminded of the fun-filled, noisy and lively dinner that he had experienced at this in-laws place a couple of days ago. Why couldn't his family eating time be so animated???

It was probably because the most animated person in THEIR family was eating her food quietly. Well… the most animated after Raj! Or did she surpass him??? He didn't know… but they both were competent enough for anyone to make it difficult to decide, that who was the more noisy one.

Arohi was again sitting across to him and had all eyes for the food on her plate. He stared at her like a love sick puppy, hoping that she would spare one glance in his direction. But Arohi refused to oblige. She ignored him the same way she had, when she was angry with him, but last night they had come to an understanding right? And still she was not behaving normal… why! Whatever, the reason, Arjun Singhania knew how to make his wife talk and react.

Pulling out his foot from his loafers, Arjun stuck it out very slowly towards the bottom of her patiala salwar. Slowly hooking his thumb inside, he touched her shin with his toes and slid the material slowly up her leg. He made sure that he threw a quick glance around the table before returning his gaze to the toast on his plate.

Arohi felt Arjuns warm toes touch her skin and travel upwards slowly. She completely froze and stopped eating. Her breathing shallowed and Arohi gulped the last morsel of food in her mouth.

Trying to ignore the goosebumps that were threatening to break out of her body, she closed her eyes. But closing eyes turned out to be a bad idea!!! When she could only feel Arjuns touch, she found herself getting lost all the more. A quick glance at her husband told her that he was feigning ignorance… the same way she had done some weeks ago. The only thing that gave him away was the lopsided smile that was pasted on his bowed face.

A sudden urge to wipe that smirk off his face made Arohi pull back her leg sharply and propel it forward with full force, thus ending in kicking the sinful foot that had managed to touch her oversensitive skin.

Arjuns juice sprayed out of his mouth at the sudden impact and he started coughing at the unexpected reaction. A sharp pain in his shin made him wince and he looked up to see a triumphant smile on Arohis face, before she dropped it and made a show of concern.

"Kya hua Arjun???" Her extra sweet honey voiced question sounded completely fake to him but the rest of the family took over in fussing over him and Arjun concentrated on them.

"Kuch nai daaddi… Bas zara… khaasi jaisa horaha hai…" Arjun fake coughed a couple of times to convince them and Rashi passed a glass of water to him. Smiling at them, Arjun drank water and shot a glare in his wifes direction. But she had gone back to eating her breakfast.

"Romit, aaj mujhe aane mein thodi der hojaayegi. Can you please pick up Raj after school? College se seedhe Raj ke school chale jaana. Waha se phone aaya tha ki, the-after-school-bus-service aaj available nahi hai." Arohi finished her breakfast and got up to leave.

"Ji bhabhi. Don't worry, mein Raj ko pick kar lunga." Romit smiled at her.

"Arohi…" Arohi stopped on her way to the stairs as she heard Arjun call out to her, and turned around.

"I will pick you up on my way back home. I need your driver to run an errand for me. So after dropping you off at work, he will be coming to the office." Arjun looked at her hopefully.

Arohi knew that Arjun had purposely said this now. He knew that she would not create a scene in front of the others, or even give them a hint that they have been fighting. And he was right.

"Ok." Arohi watched as Arjun smiled in relief and without returning his smile, she headed towards her room.

Rashi ran around her cabin making corrections on the mannequin as her phone rang. Digging under all the fabric rolls,where her phone had disappeared, she hurried to connect the call before it got dropped. In that hurry she did not see the caller ID.

"Hello…?" Her raspy breath came on the phone.

"Rashi??? Kya hua? Why are you sounding out of breath? Are you alright? Kaha ho tum??? Tell me I will come there right now…" Rajveers filled-with-worry urgent voice exploded over the phone and Rashi stilled before she smiled.

"Im in office Rajveer. And I am fine. Mera phone pata nahi kaha kho gaya tha usse dhundte huey I got a bit breathless." Rashi could almost hear Rajveer heave a sigh of relief.

"Oh… ok. I just called to ask… how are you…" Hesitation and reluctance was evident in his voice.

"I said na, im fine. Kya hua Rajveer?" It was Rashis turn to get concerned.

"Nahi… Kuch nahi… voh, bas uss din ke baad…"

Memories of that night flooded Rashis brain. She had been a mess and Rajveer had almost come to her as a knight in shining armour… almost. Not that she needed one! She had taught that sorry-excuse-of-a-man, a lesson. But still his presence had given her emotions an outlet and she could not deny that she felt safe and comforted in his arms. His concern brought a smile to her face and she blushed a bit.

"Im fine Rajveer. Actually… I never got to say thank you to you for that night. I… "

"Rashi… you don't need to thank me. Afterall, what are friends are for!"

Friends??? After all this he still thought they were just friends!!! Rashi frowned, she realised that she did not like this one bit. But then if not friends, then what was the relationship between them??? Is she ready to give it a name?

Probably not… Even Rajveer has had his share of a traumatic marriage and so maybe he wants to take things slow too. She did not blame him if he was thinking this way, but she definitely needed to know what was on his mind. And there was only one way to do it.

"Rajveer… Are you free tonight?"

Rajveers heart lurched at the question. The probability of seeing Rashi made his heart beat a tad bit faster. He just wanted to make sure that in his eagerness he doesn't make her uncomfortable. "Yes I am free. Kyu? Thank you dinner khilana chahti ho mujhe???"

"Haan… kuch aisa hi samajh lo. Plus I need to talk to you." Rashi liked his good-natured mischief but right now she wanted to know something very desperately.

"I want to talk to you too. Finalise the venue and tell me. I can meet you by 7pm."

Cutting the call after finalising everything, Rashi sat back in her chair. Tonight she had to find out what was in his mind. Did he feel something for her or was it just "friendship". It was an almost 'zindagi ya maut ka sawal' now!

"Kyuki mein bevakoof nahi hu. Clearly you're are smart lawyer and I don't want to spend the following 5 months trying to dodge your legal traps. The day I get my child, you get yours."

Arohi remembered Arjuns words when he had taken her away and got her to his home. 'That was so smart of him!' Arohi smiled when she realised how Arjun had calculated each and everything. His words, his actions, his promises… Her smile turned in to a full blown grin and she felt immensely proud of him. It was indeed a good idea that he had come up with. But he had still not confided in her.

Arohi frowned and dropped the CD's in her lap. She will not forgive him so easily for that. He had given her the promise she wanted, but she was still not talking properly to him. Somehow, someone or something reminded her of the baby and her mood was getting ruined. It was going to take some time for her to come around… Arjun would just have to deal with that.

"Oye… Kidhar khoyi hui hai! Gaano ka selection hua ki nahi??? Sangeet ke liye sirf 10 din bache hain. Choreographer ko sabse rehearsal bi karani hai."

Arohi nodded at her bua and picked up the CD's from her lap and went back to song selection.

"Jiss din Arohi mere bachhe ko janam degi, uss din mein final divorce papers pe sign kardunga. No drama, no conditions."

Sudden worry started gnawing at Arohis brain. What will happen if her family finds out that shes not pregnant! Her dad will definitely flip and get her home the next moment. He will come up with some legal tricks to get her "seperation period" reduced and file for divorce. And now, it was impossible for Arohi to stay without Arjun. No matter how muchever angry she was with him, Arjun and Raj were her life now and she could not function without them. If only he had told her about his plan before… damn you Arjun Singhania!

Lovedeep saw Arohi lost in thought again and gritting her teeth at the floor. Placing a hand on her shoulder, she sat next to her niece.

"Kya baat hai Arohi? Koi problem hai kya?"

Arohi looked at Love. 'Should she tell her bua? She was like her best friend… as good as Shefali. It wont make a difference to her as bua had always supported Arjun, but she did not want to involve more people in this. This was between her and Arjun and she wanted to keep it that way.'

"Kuch nai bua. Bas thodi thak gayi hu…"

"Oye… Mein tujhse jyada kaam kara rahi hu kya? Mein jaanti hu tujhe aise time pe aaram karna chahiye aur…"

"Nai bua!" Before Lovedeep launched into a lecture series regarding the baby, Arohi cut her off. "Aisa kuch nahi hai. Voh… voh kal raat ko Raj ka homework le rahi thi toh sone mein late hogaya isliye… Aaj raat ko jaldi so jaaungi toh I will feel fresh tomorrow morning." Smiling in reassuarance, Arohi went back to work.

Lovedeep got up and started walking towards where the caterers were waiting for her. 'Why is Arohi so distracted today? I hope everything is fine… maybe its just pregnancy mood swings.' Shrugging her shoulders at the thought, Love went back to attacking her to-do list.

"Come in…" Arjun spoke without turning his eyes away from his laptop.

Romit and Raj entered the cabin grinning. No matter what was happening around them, they were two people Arjun knew, who managed to smile despite of everything and also, in the process, bring a smile to his face. Raj was in his uniform as Romit had picked him up from school and got him here.

"Tum dono yaha kya karrahe ho?" Arjun was pleasantly surprised and that was evident in his smile.

"Rashi di ka mujhe college mein phone aaya tha. She had forgotten her colour chart at home, so mein voh pick up karke Raj ko lene gaya. Mein unko ye chart deke aata hu. Tab tak Raj ko yahi rehne do."

As Romit went out of the cabin, Raj dropped his school bag on the floor, scampered up on one of the chairs in front of Arjun and leaning back, gave his father a stare.

Arjun cocked an eyebrow upwards as he saw Raj look at him… not look, but almost glare. His eyebrows immediately frowned, due to his confusion of not understanding anything.

"Abb kya kiya aapne dad???" Rajs question made Arjun frown more. Grabbing the display of his laptop, he shut it and placed his joint hands under his chin.

"Kya matlab?"

Raj continued to stare. "Matlab mom itni upset kyu hai??? Aapne zaroor kuch kiya hoga…"

Arjun jerked back in surprise. "Tum… tum itne sure hoke kaise keh sakte ho ki… maine hi kuch kiya hai? Aisa bhi toh ho sakta hai ki…"

"Dad please!" Raj cut him off by raising his palm in the air facing Arjun. "Mein 6 saal ka hu, lekin stupid nahi hu!"

Arjuns mouth opened at the attitude displayed by his son.

"Ab aap batayenge kya hua? So that I can help you…"

Arjun sighed in resignation. "This time… you cant help me Raj. Mujhe hi kuch karna hoga… And don't worry I will manage. Arjun Singhania ko apni wife ko patana aata hai."

"I know you can manage… akhir aap dad kiske ho! But I can also help from my side na… So Im with you dad!!!"

Just then Romit entered the cabin and told Raj that they are leaving. Showing a thumbs up sign to his father, Raj scampered off the chair, picked up his bag and rushed out of the cabin. Arjun watched amazed at the speed at which his son exited his cabin. He hated to admit it, but he felt much better that SOMEONE was on his side.
