CHAPTER 4

(continued in the canteen)

Katelyn took in a deep breath, letting it all out loudly. "Whatever, as long as she doesn't dare talk to me or look at me the wrong way." I watched as Katelyn groggily walked over to the other side of the table, angrily throwing her food down, and loudly scrapping the chair out, slumping down. The entire table was silent now, signaling that the tensions were extremely high. While we had fifteen minutes left for lunch, Katelyn abruptly got up and left without saying a word to any of us. After lunch, I made my way over to building four, where my next class was being held, gym. The gym teacher, Coach Webber handed me my gym uniform, which consisted of navy blue shorts that had the Ridgewood mascot, a bobcat, printed on the edge of where the shorts were cut off. I also received a white t-shirt, which had Ridgewood Academy written on it with navy blue lettering.

When I changed in the locker room, I stepped back outside of the gym, surprised to find Swayam in my gym class. He was talking with a few guys, as he flipped his sleek locks of black hair out of his eyes. "Interested?" Kria suddenly asked me from behind. I jumped, startled by her sneaking up on me. I placed a hand over my heart, as my heart began to beat quickly. "Oh, God, Kria. You scared the shit out of me." Kria chuckled, pinning her hair up in a high ponytail. "Sorry, I should've told you I had gym with you."

I shook my head and grinned. "It's fine. Just try not to give me a heart attack next time." Kria narrowed her eyes towards me jokingly. "No promises." After everyone changed into their gym uniforms, we all gathered towards the center of the gym, where coach held a basketball in his hands. "Well, students! If it isn't obvious already, we're playing basketball today." He instructed, holding the basketball up with one hand. "Swayam Shekhawat Captain of the blue team. Katelyn Hale- Captain of the white team. Now, heads or tails?""Heads." Katelyn said immediately. Swayam raised an eyebrow, as he shrugged. "Tails."

Coach got a quarter out of his pockets, as he flipped it in the air, catching it on his palms, and flipping it to the other side. His eyes darted towards Swayam, as he announced, "Tails it is. You can choose your teammates first." Swayam's eyes scanned the room, landing on a muscular, tall guy with dampened hair. "Drew." I heard a groan escape Katelyn's lips, as she began choosing another teammate. They went back and forth, as Kria left my side to join Swayam's team. It finally narrowed down towards a tiny girl in wide rimmed glasses, and of course, me. It was Katelyn's turn to choose a teammate, as she snickered at me. "I choose the girl who is not Sharon." She glared at me. The tiny girl jumped up in surprise, quickly sprinting over to Katelyn's back, where her teammates all stood. Swayam looked up from his feet, with his brown eyes meeting mine. "I guess I pick Sharon, then." He mumbled lowly under his breath. I blushed in embarrassment, obviously due to the fact that I was the last one chosen to play basketball. I stood beside Kria, who nudged my elbow. "Don't worry about Katelyn. She's just like that sometimes." Kria assured. I shrugged, as we all gathered on the court. Coach blew the silver whistle that hung around his neck, as the basketball dropped to the ground.

Immediately, Swayam snatched the ball in one swift movement, as he quickly dribbled and paced to the other side of the court. He made a layup, scoring our team two points. The ball dribbled back and forth between the teammates, but I never once got to touch it. I was wide open, with no one blocking me, so I couldn't see why anyone was not passing it to me. The ball was in Kria's hands now, as she dribbled it to the half court, with our opponents surrounding her, so she was unable to shoot. Her eyes frantically met mine, as she passed it to me. My eyes widened, as my heart started to pound in my chest. I caught the ball firmly with my palms, as I dribbled it towards the hoop. Before I got a chance to take more than four steps, opponents gathered around me, trying to steal the ball. I looked around, pleading for help, but everyone else was blocked, too. I stood so far away from the hoop, not even close to the free throw line. I had no choice but to shoot. My heels sprang up, as I released the ball from my hands in a quick movement. Time seemed to stop, as the ball went towards the hoop, hitting the backboard, and swishing into the hoop. Coach sprang up from his seat, clapping rapidly. "Three pointer!"

After the time was up, it turned out that Swayam's team had won. I received a few pats on my back from the guys, congratulating me on my impressive three pointer. Kria jumped at me from behind with a grin on her face, as we entered the girl's locker rooms. "Hey, you never told me you could play basketball!" I smiled slyly, wiping the sweat that had formed on my forehead. "My mom use to teach me how to play, she was the captain of her basketball team in high school." I felt slightly pained talking about my mother, since the last time I had seen her was approximately five years ago. I would be lying if I said I didn't miss her.

"No wonder why you were so damn good." Kria commented. I took a shower after, shampooing my sweaty hair thoroughly, and letting my skin soothe in the warm water. I left my hair damp and wet, since there were no blow dryers in the locker rooms. After, I changed back in a pair of black sweatpants and an oversized gray t-shirt. It wasn't something I would normally wear in public, but I was too lazy to run back to my dorm to get a change of clothing.

Kria and Rey waited outside of the locker rooms for me. I walked in on them in an intimate make out session. When Kria saw me, she jumped off of Rey, with flustered, red lips.

"Sorry, did I interrupt?" I teased. Rey smirked, kissing the top of Kria's forehead. "Maybe." He played along. Kria rolled her eyes, gulfing herself around Rey's arms. She stared at me . "Adam, Swayam, Katelyn and Ryan invited us all for pizza out of campus today. Want to come with?" I chuckled, shaking my head. "All of us? Or just you and Rey?" I asked. "One more person won't kill. Just come with us." Rey insisted. I shrugged. "I don't know. Katelyn doesn't seem too fond of me. And I don't even know who Adam and Ryan are. It would just be too awkward."

Kria slapped my shoulder playfully. "Is this just an excuse to avoid seeing Swayam because you're wearing sweats? Come on, you look fine." I blushed, slapping her back. "Are you serious? No, no! It's not like that." "Oh look, Kria, you made Sharon here turn all red." Rey joked. "I told you she had a thing for Swayam." Kria agreed. My jaw dropped, as my face turned even more flustered than it already was. "Guys, no! It's not like that!" Kria looked at me skeptically, and grinned wickedly. "Then you have no problem coming for some pizza with us, right?" I hesitated. "Because you know, if you don't come, I'll just assume that you really do have a thing for Swayam…" Rey smirked. I raised my hands up in surrender, looking at the couple unbelievably. "Fine, fine! I'll come." I sighed. "God, you guys are like a match made in heaven. I followed Kria and Rey out of the school gates. They were ahead of me by a few paces, as I pondered alone by myself behind them. Rey had his arm tightly around Kria's waist, as she giggled at something Rey hadwhispered in her ear. We walked by a park full of wonders of greenery, and finally stopped on the corner of a street full of tiny restaurants and stores.

Kria finally turned around to face me, pointing to the pizza shop that was on the corner of the block.

"Sharon, that's the pizzeria. Come on, I can see everyone through the glass." Kria grinned, tugging on Rey's hand. I entered the pizzeria behind them, as a bell that hung from the door rang. Immediately, the aroma of greasy and cheesy pizza filled my nose. I scrunched my nose, knowing that I would never step foot in a pizzeria in this condition back in California. The closest thing I could ever get to pizza in Los Angeles was a five star Italian restaurant that required reservations and formal attire.

"Hey, I think they're all sitting in the booth in the back." Rey said, to no one specifically. Kria and I followed Rey towards the back of the dirty pizzeria. Before either of us got to greet anyone, Katelyn's voice roared up in anger. "What the hell is she doing here?" she asked, scrunching her nose in disgust at me. "Kat, quit complaining, and get used to it. She's a part of us now." Kria defended me, sliding into the booth, next to Swayam and another male. Katelyn glared at me. "She will never be welcomed in our group. She's just another one of those spoiled brats, like Keisha and her sidekicks." My ears perked up at the sound of Keisha's name. Oh boy, did I have a strong hatred for that girl. "I'm not like Keisha." I managed to squeak. Katelyn threw her hands up in the air in exaggeration. "Oh, now she speaks up for herself. For a second, I thought she was too weak without her father and his billion dollars here to protect her." I felt my face burning into a weak feeling of embarrassment. I bit down on my lip so hard; I honestly thought I could taste the bitter metal taste of my blood. Katelyn suddenly stood up from her seat, as her body pressed tightly up against mine. Her brown eyes were burning with a strong passion of hatred.

"Look, pretty princess. Don't think I don't know about your spoiled and bitchy ways, because I know, and so does everyone here. We've all read about what a horrible child you were to your father, so he sent your pathetic ass here. You are no longer welcomed to your rich, pathetic father, and you will not be welcomed here. Got that?" Katelyn spat, dangerously low. My nose flared up in frustration, and I have had just about enough from the bullshit I had been receiving from everyone in this bloody place. "Bitch, get you and your fake purple extensions out of my f**king face." I snapped, pushing Katelyn harshly away from me. Katelyn, surprised by my force, stumbled back a couple of steps. Her lower back bumped against the white and red checkered table, as she let out a groan.

I pressed my lips into a tight, firm line. I took small steps, as I leaned over to Katelyn, who seemed the slightest bit startled. "You can come at me all you want, Katelyn, but just remember; when you bring up my father, you cross the line." It seemed like everyone was surprised by my sudden burst of anger. I stared at the surroundings, and noticed that everyone's eyes were glued on me, even the men who were working behind the counter had stopped working to see my outburst. The only one who didn't seem surprised by my confrontation was Swayam. His eyes were as emotionless as his face, but yet, he was still looking at me with an intense stare that I couldn't manage to make out. I took in deep breaths, swallowing down the lump that was forming in my throat. I never cried. I turned to Kria, who was staring at me with a slightly pouted mouth. "I-I'll meet you back at the dorm." I stuttered.

I casually walked out of the pizzeria, but as soon as I was out of sight from everyone, I took off in a full sprint. I didn't even know my way around here, and I didn't know where I was exactly going. I strolled into a park, which was pretty much empty, with the exception of a mother and toddler on the swings, laughing happily. My stomach pained, as I remembered how much my mother use to love me, and push me on the swings when I was five. I sat on the end of the plastic red slide, as I rested my head down on the cool plastic. I let my feet hang from the ending of the slide, as I stared up at the sky. It was chilly today, but still sunny. The clouds in the sky were almost transparent, but you could still faintly see puffs of white cotton contrasting with the sky blue. I spaced off into my own wonders. How was my father doing right now without me at home, constantly asking him for this and that? He was probably upset, and regretful at the fact that he shipped his daughter across the country over a dumb fight. I could picture it right now, my father picking up the phone, and wanting to call me, but being afraid that I would be too mad. But, I wouldn't be angry with him. I would leap in the air with excitement at the fact that my father wanted to welcome me home, because Massachusetts was horrible. I had already made two enemies, Katelyn and Keisha. Plus, the students here didn't give me such kind glances, either. I clenched my fists, angry at the fact that I was looked so bad upon. I could hear someone approaching me, as I closed my eyes. I could hear the faint sound of someone stepping on the crunchy leafs, and kneeling next to me, as I lay unconscious. The person lightly shook my shoulder, as my eyes opened, clearing my thoughts out.

That person was swayam….
