PART SIX

Khushi spend the day feeling completely and utterly useless, having wanting to occupy her mind and stop thinking about the results of the biopsy led her to having to think about it more as everywhere she turned she was told to rest.

She sat in the poolside area on the hard floor; her head aback, leaning against the tall transparent glass door, facing the sun, feeling like her mind was going to explode.

The biopsy had included her lung tissues being extracted, but what exactly were they testing for, Khushi thought, her eyes scrunching up, unsure of the answer.

She had coughed up blood, she was experiencing excruciating pain very regularly, what was wrong with her?

She looked up, immediately shielding her eyes from the sun, placing a hand in front of her eyes feeling the light's ray reflecting off her eyelashes.

What if something is seriously wrong, Khushi thought to herself, feeling like such a circumstance was forbidden in the brightness of the sun.

She moved into her room, walking over to the dresser to look in front of the mirror.

She moved closer, slightly hesitantly.

Her eyes looked more tired than she had ever seen them despite the enough hours of sleep, and the goldenness of her skin seemed to have been faded slightly.

She took her reflection in, she seemed fragile, as if she was breakable by the slightest spur of wind.

Khushi frowned at her reflection, not liking the person she saw in front of her, not recognising her, as if she was a stranger that had suddenly overtaken her.

Khushi blocked the stranger out, closing her eyes as she did so.

************************************************

"Here, take it," Arnav said, thrusting the signed document into Pam's hands, indicating for her to leave.

He looked down at his desk, simply seeing blurs of letter words in front of him, pushing it away from him, revealing their insignificance.

He suddenly looked up at the clock, lingering time, stretching the minutes, the hours that passed till Khushi's results would be told.

How was he meant to concentrate on anything till then?

After, what felt like a lifetime, the clock struck six o'clock and so he grabbed his blazer from the back of his chair thrusting it on and marching out his office, his rushed footsteps reflecting his heartbeats.

Arnav arrived home to hear her before he saw her, her payal twinkling wherever she strode, its sound coming to an immediate halt as she stood in front of him.

He sighed inwardly, a sudden wave of relief washing over him, simply seeing her slowed down the worried heartbeats that were threatening to drown his heart.

"How are you?" He heard himself saying.

She broke their eye contact, nodding at the floor, and resumed the sounds of twinkling as she went into kitchen her dupatta ruffling slightly at the movement.

His eyes couldn't help but follow her before she disappeared behind the wall that obstructed him from seeing her.

He moved towards the stairs, not knowing that the same eyes he yearned to see were watching him from the door of the kitchen.

The evening moved to the night and the sign that Shyaam truly was the bearer of darkness grew apparent, little did people notice, he arrived at 8 o'clock as the family had sat down to eat dinner.

"Shyaam-ji!" Anjali called, standing up as his arrival, whilst Khushi and Arnav began focusing on their plates, their backs facing him.

"Rani Saiba!" Shyaam replied, in the same tone, placing down his briefcase and putting an arm around her, whilst she led him with the other to sit next to her at the dining table.

"Hello," Shyaam said, greeting the family, not receiving replies from the two individuals who did not wish to contaminate their vision with his view.

Dinner continued, silence wrapped up in the chatters of the other family members.

Their silence was broken by Arnav whispering to Khushi, "have you had your painkillers?"

"No," Khushi replied.

"Where are they?"

"Upstairs."

Arnav made to get up, when Khushi held onto his arm.

Arnav looked down at her hand that had enclosed upon his arm; did she feel his heartbeat suddenly taking off?

Khushi looked down as well and quickly took her hand off him.

"I-It's fine, I'll have them when I go upstairs," Khushi replied.

She suddenly felt ashamed of herself. The truth was she did not want to be in front of Shyaam without Arnav by her side, it was as if his presence would tell the devil across them that Arnav would protect her from him.

But was that really true, Khushi thought to herself, in reality it was like Arnav had taken his side and both had vowed to make her life a living hell, and so Khushi looked away from Arnav.

The laughing around them felt somewhat distant as the minds of the two individuals went to where they had been for the past day, Khushi's results.

'Please, please let everything be okay' they both prayed.

Plates emptied and the family dispered, Arnav made his way upstairs, whilst Payal led Khushi to the sitting room where Payal expressed her worry for the results to come in tomorrow, they told each other all the positive elements, little did they know the storm had already struck and it was now seeping through, wanting to destruct everything that came in contact with it.

The darkness of the night conveyed it was time to sleep and so the sisters made their ways to their rooms, bidding each other goodnight.

Khushi entered the room to find it empty, she looked outside to see Arnav standing in the poolside area, gazing at the moon.

He was already changed in his night clothes, and had his hands in his pockets, breathing deepily, feeling the cool air slapping against him, as if to wake him up from the nightmare that they were living.

He did not hear her come in and did not feel her gaze upon him.

She dragged her feet to get changed inside the bathroom, she took a long look in the square mirror in front of her, her hand hovered in front of her reflection, she could feel her heart racing as she gazed at herself and her weakness.

She turned the tap on, splashing her face with water, she leaned against the sink, breathing deepily.

'It's going to be okay,' she chanted to herself.

****************************************

"Arnav-ji?" Khushi said, quietly.

He turned to see her too changed in her night clothes, her long air blowing slightly in the wind, the coldness of the night somehow growing, pricking him.

"I know that you want to come tomorrow to the hospital," she said, "but I don't you want to," she finished.

"Huh?"

"I don't you want to come."

It took him a while to register exactly what she was saying, having spent the entire day thinking about it and for her to suddenly say he was not to come clashed against his thoughts.

"I don't care, I'm coming," he said, stepping away from her.

"But it's my test results," she replied.

This girl was being ridiculous, tomorrow she would receive results conveying the implications of her health and he was not going to let her go alone.

"Don't be stupid, Khushi," Arnav replied, indignantly.

There was a moment where Khushi said nothing, making Arnav feel like she had decided that fighting him was of no use, when she suddenly said, "what is it to you anyway?"

He glanced at her, did she seriously think he did not care for her at all?

"Well?" She said.

"Khushi, shut up, I'm coming with you if you like it or not," he replied, avoiding her question, leaving the poolside.

"Why?" She said following him.

"B-because if I didn't Di would get suscipious," he replied bitterly, knowing that a lie had just escaped his lips, he did not want to see her face at his blunt response.

The morning finally came, and Arnav welcomed it with his tired eyes, having not slept properly as his thoughts forbade him from sleep.

He heard Khushi stirring slightly as he put on his shoes, he looked over to see her stretching her arms, only for her to suddenly stop as she gritted her teeth.

He recognised that look and took two painkillers from its packet whilst occupying his other hand with a glass of water.

"Here," he said, meeting her sleepy eyes as she sat up.

She gulped down the pills quickly, not having much of a choice, placing the glass on the side as she wiped her face, looking outside as if to verify that it really was morning.

"We want to leave after you've had breakfast," Arnav said, his palms sweating.

"Okay," she replied, not looking like she was ready to argue with him again for coming.

He left the room, letting her get ready in peace.

Once the two finished forcing down pieces of toast down their throat they made their way to the car.

The ride to the hospital was filled with silence the accompanied with Arnav's frequent glances to a Khushi looking out of the window, lost in thought.

Arnav parked, switching off the car.

Khushi continued to look out the window, "Khushi?" Arnav called, taking off his seatbelt, leaning forward when there was no response.

"Khushi?" He called louder.

"Hm?" She suddenly said, looking away from the window, meeting his worried gaze.

"W-we should go," Arnav replied, observing her.

"Okay," she said, nodding, her smile covering her fear.

They both shuffled to the entrance of the hospital both unconsciously walking as slow as possible, they made their way to the ward where Khushi had stayed.

They were struck with more silence, as if to bolden their fear, to emphasise it.

Doctor Rahoul stood in the reception of the ward as if waiting for them.

"Mrs. Raizaida, Mr. Raizaida, please follow me," he greeted, leading them to his box-shaped office, opening the door for them.

Arnav looked around, the arrangement was the same and he suddenly saw himself sitting in front of the desk the last time, the last time where Doctor Rahoul told him Khushi could have cancer.

The vision in front of him disappeared as Khushi moved towards the desk, moving her chin toward her shoulder, seeing him in the corner of her eye, as if to make sure Arnav was going to really stay.

As all three individuals sat down Arnav couldn't help but want to suddenly freeze time just for a few seconds, to anticipate himself for what was to come.

But no preparation is sufficient for the words that itself freeze us.

"We have the results back from your bone biopsy," Doctor Rahoul said, taking off his glasses that were perched on his nose.

Arnav could feel his hands shaking underneath the table, and could see Khushi looking at the Doctor attentively, for a split second her eyes met his.

He could see fear in them.

He automatically took her hand in his, feeling hers shaking as well, but as they clasped them together the shaking stopped.

But just for a second.

"We have found tumour cells, and I'm sorry to say," Doctor Rahoul sighed "that you have bone cancer," he finished, looking at Khushi.

A single tear dropped from Arnav's eye as the storm had finally roared and now all were aware of its presence.

beautiful update, as I have expected.
i was feeling the same way that she would have cancer. i don't know how the next one will progress.. but i can assure you, so far you have been successful to portray their pains... they are feeling by the mental separation they have right now.
arnav's dilemma has been shown perfectly and khushi's painful acceptance of fate is also written wonderfully.
please keep writing the way you have planned or thought of.. don't let public demand control your creativity.

since i am following it regularly, may i request you to pm me for next update?
