You could even argue that some reality shows, might have increased this trend...As we see a certain group of Real-ebraties (Reality TV regulars), who are always in the news...As a result focus has shifted from fiction shows...Resulting in more time and investment given to reality shows, rather than a developement in fiction...
I might be generalising...But I think fiction shows need a big boost of creativity, which is sadly lacking at the moment...TRP is also a big factor, as producers chase numbers and not good stories...If the media would focus on the content of shows, it might perhaps open up the debate for better content and more flexabilty in the industry...
Like Karan, I am sure many other actors want to do more than the typical 'saas bahu'...But for that to happen, channels and the media need to nurture change 😊...

@bold

thing is, everything works vice-versa

just take example of india forums only..

i have been here since 2 yrs and majority i have seen give more attention to their fav so called couples and quite rare on their acting or on d plot of d story, regardless of how illogical it may be..

fans show more interest in actors' personal lives, specially in d rapport wid their costars. every1 forgets d major difference between a movie and a daily soap is d latter doesn't has a single protagonist, each and every person has imp role to play, but sadly thanks to keep some happy, main theme is always tampered with..

and eventually media looks out more for an actor's personal life as fodder

sad truth - these days, its d artist who sells himself, not his art!

So basically we have all concluded...
  • For change to happen,every aspect of the industry has to make an effort...
  • More focus needs to be on content and work...Not offscreen segments, gossip and an actors' personal lives...
  • We as the audience have to support new and different ideas, as well demanding more than 'saas bahu' ...
  • Channels should stop using the TRPs as the 'be all and end all' for shows...
