v - "Jeevs you're gonna come early today right?"
j - "Yeah Viren, I've switched shifts with someone. I should be home in a few hours.
v - "Even I have to go to court early tomorrow morning"
j - "Okay, I got to go. Just got paged, I'll see you tonight"
v - "Bye, love you" he said cutting the phone.
Viren went back upstairs to check on Zaaine. He went inside his room and saw him still asleep. He looked like a little teddy bear sleeping curled up in his blanket. Zaaine would always take a nap after lunch which would give Viren some time to finish his work. He left the room and went into his bedroom on his laptop. He had to go to court tomorrow so he needed to finish off his work. Since he only went to the office three times a week, he would have to work a lot from home. And now that Jeevika was busy with her surgical program, he wanted to give as much as attention to Zaaine. Zaaine was very intelligent, just like his parents. He spoke small sentences and was very well-behaved for a boy. He loved both his parents so much and was equally attached to them.
z - "Daaa"
Viren thought he heard Zaaine so he went to his room and saw him sitting up on his bed.
z - "Daaa, me hungry"
v - "Let's go get you some food" he said picking him up from the bed and helping him down.
Zaaine held Viren's hand and they both slowly walked down the stairs. As soon as Zaaine got to the last step he rushed to the kitchen. Viren got Zaaine's milk bottle out from the fridge and then picked him up. They both went upstairs back into Viren's bedroom. Zaaine climbed up his parents' bed and crawled under the blanket. He then held his hand out telling Viren to give him his milk. Viren smiled at him and gave him his bottle.
z - "Daa, elmo please"
Viren turned the tv on and put Zaaine's favorite show on. Jeevika and Viren wouldn't let Zaaine watch a lot of tv, only his favorite show Sesame Street because Zaaine loved Elmo. Zaaine was really excited to watch his show. He was laughing as he finished his milk and sitting peacefully without disturbing Viren. Viren was finishing his work on the laptop as he had an important meeting tomorrow and had to go to court also. After an hour, Zaaine's show finished. He got up standing on the bed.
v - "Zaaine sit down. You will hurt yourself"
Zaaine moved and then placed himself on his dad's lap. Viren was just in love with how cute his son was. He easily distracted Viren with his cuteness. Viren then closed his laptop placing it on the side table and took Zaaine in his arms.
z - "Daa where is mommy"
v - "She's at work Zaaine"
z - "Whyyy?"
v - "Because she's helping sick people"
z - "Me miss mommy" he said placing his head on Viren's chest.
Viren hated seeing Zaaine low like this. This whole week Jeevika was on call, and she would only see Zaaine for a few minutes in the morning. He didn't even get to see her today at all.
v - "Mommy misses Zaaine too"
z - "Mommy no call me today"
v - "She will call you Zaaine"
z - "Me wanna go see mommy, da"
v - "But she's busy Zaaine. She won't be able to come see you"
z - "Please daa" he said starting to tear up.
v - "Zaaine, please be a good boy and listen to me"
Instead of throwing a fit like most boys, Zaaine just got up and somehow managed to get down the bed. Viren knew he was mad at him and Jeevika now.
v - "Zaaine where are you going?"
Zaaine didn't look back or respond to Viren. He went straight to his room and sat on the ground in the corner. He covered his face with his little knees, not looking up. Viren came inside in the room and felt bad seeing Zaaine like that. Zaaine never ever did anything like this. He would often just sit in the corner when Jeevika or Viren made him because he did something bad. But today he was missing Jeevika a lot. Viren went and sat right next to him.
v - "Okay, does Zaaine want to go see mommy?" he asked
Zaaine just looked up at Viren with tears flowing down his eyes at and nodded.
v - "okay go put your jacket on then"
Zaaine got up with huge excitement and went to find his jacket. After he found out he tried putting it on, but struggled. He went to Viren asking him for help. Viren zipped up his jacket and then carried him downstairs to the garage. He buckled him up in his car seat and then drove to the hospital. He texted Jeevika and told her that they were coming to see her for a few minutes, but she hadn't responded. As soon as they got to the hospital, Viren took Zaaine inside. He told one of the nurses to page Jeevika and tell her Viren was waiting in the cafeteria. The nurse informed him she was in surgery right now and that it would be another half hour or so before she would be free"
v - "Zaaine, mommy's not free right now. Should we go home?"
z - "Nooo" he exclaimed
They both went to the cafeteria and waited there for Jeevika. She didn't come nor did she message Viren. Viren understood that she probably was still in surgery. Zaaine was just waiting patiently on his chair. He was starting to get hungry as Viren could hear his stomach growling a little. Viren picked Zaaine up from his seat.
v - "Zaaine aren't you hungry"
z - "Yes"
v - "Let's go home and eat dinner then"
z - "What about mommy" he said asking in the cutest tone possible. He was so concerned for his mother and liked to make sure she ate also.
v - "I'll feed mommy when she comes home. Let's go now"
Zaaine was really upset that Jeevika didn't come to meet him. He just hugged Viren as he carried him out back to the car. He really missed Jeevika a lot. Viren put him back in his car seat and started driving. He would keep looking back as Zaaine was really quiet and didn't say a word.
v - "Zaaine" he said trying to get his attention
Zaaine didn't respond to him. Viren knew how to make his mood better. He drove to Starbucks and took Zaaine inside. Zaaine was obsessed with Starbucks. He loved it when his parents would treat him to their cookies, or especially hot chocolate, which he liked to call coffee.
v - "Does Zaaine want coffee or a cookie?"
z - "Cookie" he said
Viren ordered him a cookie and got a coffee for himself. They went home afterwards and Zaaine was still really upset. He was a good boy though as he didn't throw a fit or start crying real loudly. He just stayed quiet, but that silence is what hurt Viren the most. He was used to Jeevika staying away a lot, but he hated seeing Zaaine without his mother. Zaaine sat on his toddler chair waiting for Viren to give him his food. Viren warmed up his small bowl of pasta and put it on his table. He ate quietly and without Viren having to feed him at all. He finished the whole thing and asked him for his cookie. As Viren was giving it to him, Jeevika called on his phone.
j - "Viren I'm so so sooo sorry. The nurse just told me you were waiting for like an hour. The surgery took longer than expected and I couldn't get out"
v - "It's okay. Zaaine was really missing you today"
j - "Give him the phone, I haven't even spoken to him all day"
Viren went near Zaaine and gave him the phone.
v - "Zaaine, mommy wants to talk to you"
Zaaine got up from his chair, not even finishing his cookie and walked upstairs in anger to his room.
v - "Zaaine where are you going?"
Zaaine didn't respond to him and just kept climbing up till he reached his room. Viren went back to talking to Jeevika.
v - "He walked away to his room"
j - "My god Viren. I feel so bad now"
v - "It's okay, he'll be fine. When are you coming home?"
j - "I just have to finish my post-ops and then I'll be home"
v - "Okay, see you soon."
Viren went to go check on Zaaine who was sitting on his bed with his toys.
v - "Zaaine why didn't you talk to mommy. She wanted to see how her Zaaine was"
z - "No. Me no talk to mommy"
v - "Okay, let go take a bath then"
z - "Noo"
v - "Come on Zaaine, or do I have to tickle Zaaine and take him to the bathroom?"
Zaaine was being stubborn so Viren started tickling him, making him laugh like crazy. He carried him into the bathroom and quickly gave him a bath. Viren hoped that by the time he finished, Jeevika would be home. Zaaine was getting sleepy again.
v - "Should we go to Zaaine's room and sleep?"
z - "Noo"
Zaaine went back into Viren's room and climbed up his bed. He lay down on Jeevika's side as it reminded it of his mom. The smell and the picture on Jeevika's side of the table, made Zaaine want to sleep on his parents' bed as he felt secure. Viren just got into his bed and patted Zaaine's head. He wanted Zaaine to stay up so he could see Jeevika, but he was too exhausted and fell asleep instantly. Ten minutes in, Viren heard the garage door open. Jeevika came running upstairs to check Zaaine.
j - "Zaaine, where's my big boy" she said going inside his room.
Viren went out of his bedroom and to Zaaine's.
j - "Where's Zaaine?"
v - "He fell asleep"
j - "Damn, he's probably so pissed with me"
v - "He was very upset in the evening. He sat on my lap and begged me to take him to see you. When I said no, he went to his room and sat in the corner of his room and started crying. That's why I brought him. We were going to wait, but he was getting really hungry. His stomach was growling, but he didn't want to leave. Then I forcefully brought him, but took him to Starbucks first"
j - "Viren I'm such a bad mother. This whole week I haven't spent any time with him"
v - "You're not a bad mother Jeevs. You're just really busy and caught up right now"
j - "That makes me a bad mother as I'm not giving him enough time"
v - "Don't worry, he will be okay. Let's go eat dinner, I was waiting for you"
j - "I don't want to eat"
v - "You not eating, isn't going to make him feel better. So let's go eat and then you get some sleep. He's sleeping on your side of the bed, holding your pillow"
j - "I miss him"
v - "Only him?"
j - "I always miss you Viren. I seriously hate my life at the hospital right now. This week there was a major car accident, and it was more like a domino effect. Several people were injured and that's why we're so busy right now"
v - "It's okay. Now can you do me a favor, and come down. I'm sooo hungry"
Both of them went back downstairs and they went to warm up some food. They felt lazy so they ate on the sofa with each other.
v - "So you have the next three days off now, right?"
j - "Yeah. I could really use the time off. I'm so tired Viren. I don't even realize I have so much body pain, until I actually start sitting down. My legs start hurting and my back is the worst"
v - "Maybe we should go take a bath?"
j - "Yeah I think I will"
v - "I didn't say you. I said we" he said smiling.
j - "Viren man. I'm so upset with myself right now for not giving enough time to Zaaine, and you're concerned about yourself"
v - "I'm concerned about you thats why I'm saying that" he said hysterically.
j - "Let's go sleep now. Don't you have to go early morning for a meeting?"
v - "Yeah, I still have to finish work. I wasted so much time today driving around with Zaaine"
j - "You go finish your work, and I'll finish cleaning up"
v - "No, we'll finish together. It will take half the time"
j - "Viren, go to the office. I'll handle this now"
Viren got up from the sofa, gave her a kiss and then went upstairs to get his laptop.
Jeevika washed the dishes and cleaned the counter. She walked to the office to see if Viren needed anything.
j - "Do you want me make you some coffee?"
v - "No, I'm just about done. You go shower up, I'll be upstairs in fifteen minutes"
j - "Okay"
Jeevika went upstairs and entered her room quietly trying not to disturb Zaaine. She wanted to hug him and plant kisses on him all over, but she didn't want to wake him up. She slowly got her clothes out of the closet and went inside the bathroom to take a bath. She came back to the room and saw the door open. She didn't see Zaaine on the bed. She hurried outside and saw him in Viren's arms.
j - "What happened?"
v - "He had a nightmare I guess" as he kept hugging Zaaine and comforting him. Viren was walking back and forth trying to get Zaaine to quiet down as he was still crying.
j - "Zaaine, are you okay"
Zaaine's head moved from Viren's shoulder to looking at Jeevika. He put his hands out and Jeevika took him from Viren. She cuddled him and then took him back to her bed where they both lay down.
z - "Me miss you mommy"
That was enough for tears to start coming out of Jeevika's eyes.
j - "I missed you too Zaaine. I love you"
z - "Me love you too" and with that Zaaine peaceful fell asleep in his mothers arms.
