With J P Dutta's 'Umrao Jaan' Alka Yagnik is back to the front, unleashing the enigma of the era through her smooth and honey-touched voice. Her controlled and emotional renditions of mujras, truly unveils a new side of her and she too feels that she is on the sill of a new phase in her career. Alka had decided to be choosy, as she had given up the hope of getting substantial singing offers going by the way things are moving in the music industry. On her decision to work for Umrao Jaan she says, "After 25 years of singing I didn't want to go on singing for a lark. I only want to do work that will take me ahead. Umrao Jaan was a God-send for me." What about the comparisons made to Asha Bhosle's rendition for the film of the same name? "I belong more to Lataji's school of singing than Ashaji's. Just because Ashaji had rendered the songs in the earlier Umrao Jaan I didn't need to be influenced by her. When I was told I was going to be Umrao's voice I was very excited. The fact that they've used only one voice for all of Aishwarya Rai's is very sensible. Normally, there are four different voices singing for the same actress." Alka Yagnik had a good time during this Diwali, which she had spend with her husband and in-laws in Meghalaya. Alka is 40 now and is very contented with life.
