An hour later, Neel arrived at Arnav's office along with his Inspector friend Richard. Arnav asked him about the number.
"Did you find about the number, Neel?"
"No luck, ASR. It is a pre paid SIM card and it is not possible to trace the person."
Arnav banged his fist on a wall. "Damn!"
"This is Richard. If you can tell us what happened, we can help you."
Siddharth introduced himself and told them about the situation. Richard scanned the letter.
"Is this your wife's handwriting?"Richard asked Arnav.
"Yes," Arnav replied as he closed his eyes in pain.
"Are you sure that she will never do what she has written?"
Arnav glared at the Inspector and said, "I am sure."
"Do you have enemies, Mr. Raizada?"
"I am in the business world and there are enemies in every corner."
"Do you suspect anybody?"
Arnav and Siddharth couldn't come up with a name.
"Can you find out about the driver, Inspector?" Siddharth asked Richard.
"Give us some basic information about him along with his photograph. I'll ask my men to be on the job."
Akash printed out the driver's photo along with his address and phone number. Richard made phone calls to his colleagues and faxed the photo to them.
"We will find the driver soon, Mr. Raizada," Richard promised him.
Meanwhile, Khushi sat in the locked room with her head buried between her knees. Her thoughts were around Siddharth and Arnav. She wondered whether she would be able to see them again before the men who kidnapped her did something to her.
The lock clipped open and the sound brought her back from her thoughts. She watched the door until the door opened and the two men stepped in.
They had come to check on her. They looked around the room and then stared at her for a while.
Khushi felt uncomfortable and lowered her eyes to the ground so that she didn't have to watch them looking at her.
The men were sure that she wouldn't escape from there. Just as the two men were about to leave, the shorter man noticed the phone on the table. Khushi noticed that he was staring at something very intently and she followed his gaze. Her eyes fell on the phone she had used to call Siddharth. She mentally cursed herself for having placed the phone on the table.
"How did this come here, Mano?" the shorter man asked his companion.
"My phone was in the bag." He glared at Khushi and said, "She must have taken it. Let's find out if she made some calls."
Mano pressed unlock button. Nothing happened. He then pressed the power button. The display screen was black.
"No charge, Raghu," Mano told him. "She wouldn't have been able to call anybody."
Raghu wasn't satisfied.
"I think we should check it out," Raghu said. "What if she spoke with somebody and then the phone's battery died?"
Mano gave a thoughtful nod.
"There is a charger in the other room. Use it."
Mano went to the other room to charge the phone and then check whether Khushi had called anyone. Raghu locked the door behind him and joined Mano in the other room.
After a couple of minutes, Mano switched on the phone and checked the dialled numbers list. He noticed an unknown number and it had been dialled twice.
"Uss ladki ne kisi ko phone kiya," Mano observed. [That girl has called somebody.]
"Patha nahi kisko. [Don't know who she called.] Sir is going to be very angry."
The two men decided that they should tell their boss. They knew that he would be angry. They decided to take a chance with his anger.
Raghu dialled a number from his phone and waited for his boss to attend the call.
"Woh tumare saath hai?" the boss asked as soon as he picked the phone. [Is she with you?]
"Yes, Sir. She is with us. We followed whatever you said."
"Good. I will be there in a while. Take care of her till then."
"Sir," Raghu started slowly. "We have a problem."
"What problem?" the boss shouted.
"She found a phone from the van and called someone twice. There was no charge in the phone when we found it. We are not sure whether she spoke to the person she called before the battery died."
"What number did she call?"
Raghu recited the number.
"Do not take any chances. Do as I say."
The boss told Raghu about his plan and asked him to be careful.
"You and your partner should be careful this time. Don't mess it up. Mujhe kuch aur problems nahi chahiye. Samhje?" [I don't want any more problems. Understood?]
"Yes, Sir. There won't be any problems this time."
"I wanted to hide the truth. But it is okay. It is for the good. I want them to know about her."
Raghu let out a huge sigh as soon as he pressed the end call button. He had thought that their boss would shout at them. He told his partner about the conversation.
"Bach gaye hum," Mano said with a small smile. [We have escaped.]
"Is your SIM postpaid or prepaid?"
"Prepaid. Why?"
"If it is postpaid, it will be easier to track your address. They will find us very soon. Prepaid SIM cards are difficult to trace. That is why."
"Postpaid nahi. Mera phone prepaid hi hai. I gave them false address proof papers and they will not be able to find out."
"That is a relief," he said. "Shall we follow our boss' orders?"
Mano nodded.
They retraced their steps to the room where Khushi was locked in. They opened the door and walked in.
Khushi looked at them in fear.
Arnav paced the lengths of his cabin while Siddharth spoke with Neel about the phone number.
"Can't you trace prepaid numbers?" Siddharth asked him.
"It is a difficult task especially when people use it for wrong purposes."
Richard's colleague, Chetan, arrived and he introduced himself to Arnav and Siddharth.
"We got the photo you faxed," Chetan told Siddharth. "Two of our men are on the job. As soon as they find out about the driver, I will let you know."
"Do it fast," Arnav ordered them.
Neel, Richard and Chetan spoke out the possibilities of finding the driver and getting the truth out of him.
At that time, the security guard walked in. Everybody looked at him and the little parcel in his hand.
"I was told to give you this, Sir," he told Arnav and gave the parcel to him.
Arnav tore the brown wrapper and found a small cardboard box. Inside the cardboard box was a ring in a polythene bag. It was the same ring he had given Khushi when he proposed to her. There were a few drops of red coloured liquid in the bag and he knew that it was blood. He closed his eyes and squeezed his hand over the ring.
Siddharth recognized the ring. He touched Arnav's shoulder and he opened his eyes.
"Khushi's," Arnav whispered as he looked at the ring in his hand.
Siddharth glared at the guard and asked, "Who gave you this?"
"Two men came in a bike, Sir. They asked me to give it to ASR Sir."
"How did they look?"
"They wore helmets, Sir. I was not able to see their faces. They gave it to me and went off."
Before the cops and Neel could question him further, Arnav's cabin phone rang.
Akash pressed the loudspeaker button and said, "Hello!"
"I need to speak with ASR," the caller said.
"Who is speaking?"
"The person who gave him the little gift. I just want to know whether he opened it."
"Who the hell are you?" Arnav roared. "Where is Khushi?"
"Calm down ASR," the caller said with a chuckle. "What's the hurry?"
"You have hurt her and you will pay for it. I will..."
"Hurt? Oh, you must have seen the blood. Don't worry. I did not hurt her," he replied. "Yet," he added. "But I will if you don't send the cops away."
Arnav looked at Richard and Chetan.
"What do you want?" Arnav asked the caller. "If you are after the money, tell me how much you want."
"If we want something, we will take it from you. Just like we took your wife. You don't have to give us. So, try to be a good husband and send the cops away. Otherwise the repercussions will be hard for you to handle."
"Listen, you bas***d. Whoever you are, I will find you and when I find you, no one, I mean, no bloody person will be able to save you from me. I will kill you and you will not be able to do a thing."
"Tumara dhamkiyaan apne paas hi rako. [Keep your warnings with yourself.] First, ask the cops to go away. If you don't, let's see what your wife has to say."
With that the caller disconnected the call.
Arnav slumped on a chair and covered his face with his hands.
Richard, who had been listening to the call, said, "ASR, we have to find..."
Before he could complete, Siddharth said, "Go away."
"I am sorry?" Richard asked.
"He said go away," Arnav told them. "You heard the caller, didn't you? So, just get out of here."
"You will not be able to handle them by yourself. You need us."
"We do but I am not ready to risk Khushi's life by keeping you people here. You have to go. If it is money they need, we will give it to them and I don't want you interfering in the process."
Chetan thought for a second and said, "They are not after your money."
Arnav, Akash and Siddharth looked at him as if asking, 'What are you saying?'
"Agar us aadmi ko paison pe interest hai, he would have asked you for the money. Usne aisa kuch nahi kaha. [If that man was interested in money, he would have asked you for money. He didn't say anything like that.] He is not interested in your money." He looked at Siddharth and said, "We will leave from this place but we will help you. We will help you in such a way that they will not be able to find out."
"No," Arnav told them. "You..."
"You can trust us, ASR. We will not do anything that might harm your wife. We will stay out of the radar."
Neel supported Chetan. "Yes, ASR. Trust us. We will help you."
Arnav and Siddharth reluctantly agreed.
Half an hour after the cops and Neel left, the security guard entered the cabin again. He had another parcel in his hand. The two men would have tossed the parcel to him and would have gone without stopping.
Arnav opened it with trembling hands and found the bracelet Siddharth had gifted her. They gulped down the fear and promised themselves that they would find her.
The telephone bell rang.
Arnav pressed the loudspeaker button and didn't wait for introductions. "You asked us to send the cops away and we did. What more do you want? Why did you give us her bracelet?"
They heard the devilish grin in the caller's voice. "Just for fun, ASR. Not everyone gets to hear the fear in the great ASR's voice. Since I heard it, I got addicted to it."
Arnav fisted his hands in anger.
Siddharth, who had been silent for a while, said, "You have just signed your own death warrant. Tell me what your last wish is and I will try to fulfil it."
"Last wish? Shouldn't you be asking that to ASR's wife? Let me give you a suggestion. I will go and give this phone to her. You can ask her about her last wish."
"You lay one finger on her and I will break every single bone in your body. Keep that in your mind," Arnav warned the caller.
"First find who we are and then, we shall speak."
The caller disconnected the call.
A couple of seconds later, Arnav's mobile rang. It was Neel's number.
Without letting Arnav speak, Neel said, "We have found the driver, ASR."
"Where is he?"
"We brought him to my house."
"I am coming."
As he picked his car keys from the mess on his table, he said, "They have found the driver. He is in Neel's house."
Arnav pocketed the ring and the bracelet and ran to his car. Siddharth and Akash followed him.
The traffic was very less and they reached Neel's house within ten minutes.
The driver was in one corner and the cops stood around him. He was frightened and he was close to tears. In the other end of the house, stood a woman and a boy in teens. A couple of suitcases were placed near couch. Arnav recognized them as the driver's wife and their son.
When the driver saw Arnav, he inched much more closer to the wall, if that was even possible.
"He did not say anything," Neel told Arnav.
"Where were they?"
"We found them in the bus stand. They were about to leave for Amritsar."
Arnav stormed towards the driver and asked, "Where is Khushi?"
"I... I... I don't... don't know," the driver stammered.
He slapped him and asked, "Where is my wife?"
The driver bent his head and looked at the ground.
Siddharth had enough of it. He plucked the gun from Richard's holster and pressed it on the driver's temple.
"I will ask you only once," he warned him. "Where is Khushi? If I get one wrong answer or silence from your side, I will blow your brains."
The driver's eyes widened and tears filled his eyes.
"I will tell you what I know," the woman said as she tried to control her tears.
All of them turned to face the woman.
"Two men came to our house yesterday and they asked them to bring your wife to them." She pointed to her husband and said, "He said no. They threatened to hurt our son and we were frightened. They said they will pay for the job. They also asked us to leave the city. He did this for our son. We are very sorry."
"What did they look like?" Neel asked her
"They stood in the shadows. They did not come out." She looked at Arnav and said, "We wanted to tell you but when they told us that they will kill our son, we were frightened. Isi liye humne ye kaam kiya tha. [That is why we did this.] "
Akash said, "You loved you son and you did this for him. Tum logon ne yeh nahi socha ki Khushi bhi kisi ghar ki ladki hai and that some people love her too." [You people didn't think that Khushi belongs to a family and that some people love her too.]
"Hume maaf kijiye, saab," the driver fell on his knees near Arnav and pleaded. "Humse ghalthi ho gayi." [Forgive us, saab. We made a mistake.]
"Maafi?" Arnav asked. "Tum maafi maang rahe ho. Did you even think what they will do to her and..." [Forgive? You are asking for forgiveness? Did you even think what they will do to her and...]
"Arnav, yeh sab baat karne ka waqt nahi hai hamare paas [Arnav, we don't have time for this] ," Siddharth reminded him. He turned to the driver and asked, "Where did you take her?"
The driver told them where he dropped her, about the letter the two men had asked her to write and how she had refused to write it when they had shown her the gun.
The nerve in Arnav's neck throbbed in anger.
He clutched the driver's collar and said, "You made a very big blunder and I will make you pay for it. If anything happens to Khushi, I promise you that I will make your life a living hell. Be sure of that."
The driver said nothing as he knew that he had berayed the family who had given him a job and had taken care of his family. The mistake was his and he had to face whatever happened next. The only thing he could do was pray for Khushi's safety.
Arnav let go off his collar and said, "Richard, make sure he doesn't leave this house."
"He will not, ASR," Richard assured him.
