'Arnav!'
'Khushi!'
They both said in unison as they stared into each other's eyes.
Khushi was the first one to recover. She struggled out of Arnav's hold.
'Khush, please! I just want to talk to you for a few minutes.'
'No! I told you to stay away!'
'Listen Khushi! I was so confused that day and to be honest, I'm still very confused! But don't run away from everyone like this. It's been too long. I'm sure we can work it out! Please just give me a chance to explain myself!'
'Explain what Arnav? There is nothing to say. If it is guilt that you're feeling, then don't! It was all entirely my fault. Okay? Happy? Now please move! You're blocking the door!'
'Guilt?! Of course I'm feeling guilty Khushi! I have not seen your face since that night...haven't spoken to you...you haven't come home even though your school is just 45 minutes away! All because I lost control for a minute! Of course I feel guilty like hell! But it's not just guilt. I miss you! I miss talking to you, hanging out with you...I just...I just miss being with you! What do you take me for? I know you think very lowly of me when it comes to relationships, but I'm not completely devoid of emotions you know. In all the years we've known each other, have I ever treated you badly? Or have I ever cheated a girl? I've always been honest about how I am! Then what is your problem? Why punish the ones who love you, your family?' Arnav was now screaming...his eyes red and body shaking. He wanted to shake her hard and knock some sense into her.
SLAP!
The sound rang in Khushi's ears before she felt her left cheek burn! Tears blinded her as she looked up into his raging eyes. He looked like a mad man and Khushi got scared. She staggered back a step. Arnav was breathing heavily, eyes closed, fists clenched. He opened his eyes and took a deep breath. He moved closer and held Khushi by her shoulders.
Arnav pulled her in his arms and held her close. 'I'm sorry Khushi...I really am. If you have it in your heart to forgive me and give me another chance, I'll be the happiest person on earth. It's your choice. Please think it over. I don't want to pressurize you. The ball's in your court'.
He looked into her eyes and slowly leaned forward and very lightly pressed his lips on her forehead.
'What makes you think it's only guilt? I've had a lot of time to think Khush! I know exactly how I feel and why I feel that. Although I feel guilty everyday, I don't think I regret it. I have changed a lot. You just need to come back to all of us and see it for yourself. If you can ever give me a second chance, let me know. My number's still the same. And please, don't punish your parents and Payal for what I did. They don't deserve any of this. Take care Khushi'. With this he enveloped her in a big bear hug for a moment before he pulled away. He looked deeply into her eyes with a look that Khushi couldn't decipher and walked away.
Khushi stood staring in the direction he went for what felt like an eternity. His words were ringing in her ears over and over again.
'Give me another chance'
'Give me a second chance'
'I've changed a lot'
'I'm sorry'
'I miss you'
'I'm miserable without you'
'It's not just guilt'
'Give me a second chance'
'Give me a second chance'
'Give me a second chance'
'Give me a second chance'
A second chance at what? Friendship? Something more? Khushi's head started spinning.
Does he...he...like me? If he does, then why did he wait for so long? Why, this wasn't even a planned meeting by him! Abhi and La did this and Arnav didn't have a clue he'll find me here! What if we hadn't met here? How long would he have waited? If he were so desperate for my forgiveness, why didn't he come and see me at Hopkins sooner? No! NO! He was just trying to assuage his guilt...yes, that's what this is all about!
But...
'Give me a second chance'
'I'm miserable without you'
'It's not just guilt'
Khushi clutched her head and let out a groan. She sat down against a wall. She sat there for a long time thinking...thinking about what Arnav said...thinking about her Amma and Babuji...her Jiji...Buaji...Anjali Di...her home...home!
After a long time, as the sun began to set in the horizon, she finally made up her mind...
