Let's talk about changes and transitions in Bollywood (films, stars, media) and its evolution as we saw it through our eyes. I invite members across all age groups, backgrounds to share their experiences, perceptions, memories and change as they felt it, in our movies and pop culture.

Media or critics' analysis aside, let's share our own candid perspectives as the viewers.

I grew up through the 90s and here's my list of changes that I felt in movies:

- Earlier one catchy song repeatedly played on TV was enough to promote a film. And WOM from friends and family was prime motivator to watch a film. Later they started cutting special promos, launch events etc. and now every one and their chacha knows what "marketing" is!

- Just one or two award shows. And it was the most exciting for us not for who wins but to see all stars on one stage. Some new awards sprang up in late 90s. Mid-2000s onwards the exclusivity got lost...nowadays we have some new awards coming up every year. Earlier it was about camaraderie between stars nowadays it seems to be more about scandal and controversies...The shows repeat so many times a year that it no longer matters even if we miss it. Unlike old days when we'd even put studies aside to watch the Filmfare award show.

- Our stars came much closer to us. Never thought there'd be something called a blog or FB where we could connect with stars with click of a button and even get replies directly from the star!

Yeah! Firstly, female dominated films were made till early 2000s. And they were clearly demarcated as artsy films. No audience for them on TV or theatres. Later for sometime such films became rare. In last 3 years they've come in vogue with a bang and have entertainment plus earn well. Makes me wish Tabu was active in today's era!

And another change is, back then people never over-analyzed movies. Movies were watched just for entertainment by all.

Now, people want to find sense in every damn movie. I mean, why watch a movie then?

There is a consciousness about making and watching more realistic films. And hence they are succeeding at the BO too unlike before.
Thanks to the 24/7 media stars have been humanized and the aura around them has gone. But everything about a star is PR controlled today and hence the younger stars lack individuality unlike the 40+ stars who started out before everything was PR driven.
There is also this concept of films becoming blockbusters over one weekend these days. IMO that doesnt give a chance to smaller films and stars to succeed. There was a time when a movie like Sholay seemed to have flopped due to the poor response in the first two weeks. The film became a rage only after that. Whereas now films get just one weekend to make a mark. Hence films with more hype rather than substance end up being declared a success in many cases. So if you are going to watch a blockbuster it might be the shittiest film of the year rather than the best film of the year unlike before.

Firstly, the fact that there is over-exposure..there was this certain element of intrigue and mystery surrounding the stars which contributed to a certain aura..now that every actor is PR driven and very keen on ruining their rivals' reputation, i think this aspect has completely vanished..
Secondly, the fact that good stories have begun to make a mark even if it doesn't have a saleable star in the lead..i doubt movies like PST would have done well a few years back..
Then there is this promotion overdrive..Today actors go absolutely berserk promoting their movie and overhyping it that you ultimately become sick of them by the time the movie releases..Am not sure when this trend started of appearing in every stupid show on Tv to promote your film but its absolutely annoying. This is mainly cos most of the time, the stars appear hardly for 2 minutes and it looks totally disconnected from the rest of the show.
The concept of 3 day hits and blockbusters and of course the 100 crore club..i cant tell u how annoying this trend is..Movies featuring big stars release in so many screens that before the WOM spreads, the film recovers its cost and becomes a blockbuster..Silver jubilees and golden jubilees have become non-existent..And ofcourse the 100 crore club..i just don get the hype about this number cos honestly most of the films in that supposedly elite club make no sense..i really wish we go back to the days where a movie is judged based on the no. of days it runs in the theatre rather than than how much money it makes

Every type of film is working genre star gender subject song all different.

Cause films are made for fans to watch and love. Whether your giving fans news subject or old subject it has to be for fans. not for some critics or for yourself.

audience is what makes any industry go round😊
