The Complete Wedding
"Madhu?"
I got out of bed and searched the room for her but she was nowhere to be found.
I walked out of our room and looked over at the stairs to see her sitting at the bottom, lost in thought.
I slowly walked down the stairs and sat on the bottom step beside her, she looked in my direction.
"RK…"
"What are you doing here?"
"I…just…that…"
"Thinking about earlier…?"
She nodded her head and I looked away.
"Madhu…I need to say something."
"Yes?"
I slowly took a hold of her hand and she placed her hand on top of mine.
"I'm sorry Madhu…"
"Sorry? For what RK?"
"I did terrible things to you and your family…and then Balraj, I didn't know he was your father and I brought him back into your lives and I just…I'm a terrible person…"
I couldn't look her in the eyes, I stood up, but she followed my movement.
She stood and came face to face with me. She gently placed her hand on the side of my face, causing me to meet her gaze.
"RK…sure, you've done a lot of bad things…but you've also done many more good things for my family and I. Besides, that's the past, forget it!"
I stared at her for a moment, silently. She just seemed so perfect in that moment. Everything I had ever wanted stood before my eyes. I remembered back to seeing her with a noose around her neck…
I pulled her in for a hug and spoke.
"Madhu…I can't believe I almost lost you…I'm never going to lose you. Never. I can't wait to make you mine in a week Madhu."
"Me either RK…me either…"
I wrapped my arms around her as though I held my life in my arms.
In a way…she had become my life. Without her, I knew I was nothing.
I kissed her forehead and then slowly pulled her away to face me.
"I'm never going to let anything happen to you Madhu…never."
She looked up at me and shot me a smile. Then she whispered as she pulled in for another hug.
"I know RK…I love you."
"I love you too Madhu."
----
One week later.
----
Chaos.
Everywhere.
I looked to my right and saw didu quickly getting ma ready.
I slowly looked straight ahead at myself in the mirror.
I wasn't even close to being ready.
One hour for a bride to get ready?!
I had spent all day helping ma that I had forgotten I was getting married too.
Over the week, everything had cleared up as RK and I had hoped. All was well and everyone was cheery as usual. Though we all were nervous for the day, we still kept smiles on our faces.
"Trishna…I'm ready beta! Help Madhu!"
"Glycerine!"
"Didu, I'm going to be late to my own wedding!"
Didu rushed over to my side and put a necklace over my head.
"DIDU! I haven't changed!"
"Oh! Go change! Now!!! You'll be late!"
I quickly picked up my lengha and rushed to the bathroom.
We had decided to change things up.
RK and I both knew that red wedding wear didn't bring along good memories (Our first wedding).
We also knew that blue was not a lucky colour for us (Our second attempt at a wedding).
And so we decided to go pink! Yes…pink.
It took a lot of convincing from my side, but he eventually agreed.
I quickly changed into the lengha and rushed back towards didu. Roma came to stand before me.
"Haye, haye ni soniye! Nazar na lag jave!"
She put her finger to her eye and then at the back of my ear. I smiled.
"Oh Roma, tum bhi na…Now I'm late! Help!"
I quickly began throwing on jewelry as ma, Roma, and didu helped.
Then they completed my look with the dupatta.
As they placed it upon my head, I finally felt like a true bride.
My dreams were finally coming true.
Ma placed her face beside mine and we looked at each other through the mirror.
"You look beautiful Madhu beti."
"Not as beautiful as you ma."
"AREY! Enough of this filmy drama…we're late!"
Roma rushed out of the door.
Ma and I quickly got up and followed didu out the door.
"ROMA?"
Roma looked over the railing at Malik.
"What happened bhaiya?"
"We're late!"
"We're coming! Shanti bhaiya, shantii!"
As we retreated down the stairs, Malik's eyes took turns between ma and I. A huge smile crossed his face.
When we reached him, I gave him a hug.
I pulled away and spun in front of him.
"How's your daughter looking today?!"
I laughed as he laughed.
"Beautiful as ever. I can't believe you're so grown up."
"This isn't my first wedding!"
I laughed and he shook his head as the smile remained on his face.
He looked towards ma.
"And how's ma looking?"
Didu winked at Malik and he blushed.
We all loved to tease the both of them.
"We're late!"
Roma yelled from inside the car.
Malik opened the door for ma as didu and I ran to the other side.
I heard him whispering to ma before she sat.
"Padminiji…today we're going to get it right."
Ma smiled at him and sat in the car.
----
"BITTUJI!"
I screamed for him and he came running into my room, panting.
"Yes chief?!"
"Where's my kurta?!"
"That…it's…I thought I put it right…wait…"
"Bittuji…look at you, you look all dressed up and dashing today!"
"Really chief?"
Bittuji smiled at me as I smiled back sarcastically.
"Yes…I didn't know YOU WERE THE ONE GETTING MARRIED. I'M LATE BITTUJI!"
"Sorry chief! I'll be right back with your kurta!"
"Hurry!"
I turned my back towards the door as I ran my hand through my hair.
"Rishu beta…"
I turned to face ma as she entered my room.
"Yes ma?"
"Everything will go perfectly, just stay calm."
"I'm trying ma, but Bittuji isn't doing his j…"
"HERE IT IS CHIEF!"
Bittuji ran in and handed me a cream coloured kurta with a pink bead lining. I wasn't looking forward to the pink sehra and salwar, but I had agreed to it for her.
I quickly rushed to the bathroom and changed.
When I walked out, ma made sure no one would cast a nazar on me.
"My Rishu's looking very handsome today! Madhu's really lucky."
Ma winked at me, which made me laugh and blush at the same time.
She helped me put the sehra on my head and then covered my face.
After ma completed all the necessary ceremonies at home, we all rushed to get to the venue.
As we reached the venue, we realized we were the first ones there.
I looked at the amazing decorations I had planned. Two altars and two priests, side by side for both our weddings at the same time.
It was perfect.
Due to last time, we had to change the colour theme of the venue and the venue itself as well. It was light blue and silver, in a large open area near a beautiful mountain scenery just above a nearby cliff. The colours stood out perfectly against the scenery.
I heard the noise of a door closing behind me.
I turned to see sasurji rushing towards me.
"The auspicious wedding time is near."
The priest spoke and I stared at sasurji.
"Sasurji! You're late!"
"Arey, RK, you haven't sat down at the altar yet either!"
We both rushed and took our spots.
Radha, Kuku, Sikky, and Dips all took their respective spots.
Radha and Bittuji sat near me, whereas the other Bhatias sat a good distance away.
Malik and I looked at each other.
"Let's make this film a hit!"
Malik laughed and then we both turned our heads to stare at the car.
The doors opened on either side.
And out came…Roma and Trishna, of course.
They laughed and pointed at us as they probably saw the disappointed expressions on our faces.
Then they reached their arms into the car. I saw as a hand took hold of Trishna's.
As Trishna slowly started to step back, Madhu became more visible.
As soon as she stepped out of the car and was in clear view, my breath caught in my throat, my heart skipped a beat, and a huge smile crossed my face.
She was so gorgeous.
Well, gorgeous was an understatement. Any complimenting word would've been an understatement for the way that she looked.
The pink of her lengha complimented her skin very well; it made her seem the perfect shade of rosy.
The silver beads on her lengha made her shine and stand out. Just like superstar RK's biwi should look like!
My eyes finally met her face and she was smiling at me.
She began to walk towards me slowly. It felt like I was in a slow motion film, where all I could see was Madhu and nothing or no one else.
I kept my eyes on her face and she winked.
Right when I was about to! Had she read my mind?
I watched her giggle as I felt my mouth open slightly in protest.
As she reached closer to me, she finally blushed as a normal bride. I smirked.
She lowered her eyes and as she was steps away from the altar.
She came to me with a varmala in her hands. I received a varmala from the priest.
We came face to face.
"Now please place the varmalas onto each other."
I watched as she quickly tried to place it on me, but I went onto my tippy toes.
She laughed. I went to place the varmala on her but Trishna pulled her back.
We went back and forth for a minute or so but eventually I bent my head before her and let her place the varmala around my neck.
"Chief! Now you're going to bow down in front of bhabiji forever!"
I looked towards Bittuji and then back towards Madhu.
"I'm fine with that."
I winked at her.
She smiled and bent to allow me to place the varmala around her neck as well.
Then we both sat.
The minute she sat down, I leaned towards her and whispered.
"Today you're looking like superstar RK's biwi."
She shot me a cute yet irritated look and I smiled.
"I'm kidding, you look beautiful Madhu."
She smiled.
"You're not looking too bad yourself."
"Hey!"
She laughed and I watched as she sneakily high-fived her laughing sister.
"You'll pay for that tonight biwi."
I winked at her as her mouth opened. I gently closed her mouth with my finger.
Then the priests began speaking.
As the priests went through the typical wedding rituals, we eventually reached the time for saat phere.
Exactly what I had been waiting for.
Trishna tied Madhu and I together as Roma tied together sasuma and sasurji.
We stood.
I turned to whisper to Madhu.
"Finally, after today that promise will be void."
She lightly hit my arm and laughed.
I stood in front and took the first four vows for nourishment, strength, prosperity, and family.
"Now the ladies please step forwards."
Madhu stood before me.
She looked at me over her shoulder and smiled.
I remembered back to our first wedding and how I had stopped her from coming in front of me. I smiled as I realized how much had changed…and how happy I was that it had changed.
We took the final three pheres for progeny, health, and love.
Then we came to a stop.
"Now you'll be placing the mangulsutra on your bride."
I took a hold of the mangulsutra and held it in front of Madhu the way I had the first time we got married. Except this time, I had no intention of throwing it onto her.
I very gently placed my arms around her neck and tied the mangulsutra in place. The way it should've been tied the first time. It was in the perfect place now.
She smiled up at me as I smiled back sincerely.
I was handed sindoor. I remembered back to spilling it in front of her, but once again, I had no intention of doing that. I took a bit of sindoor between my fingers and slowly raised my fingers to fill her maang.
The moment the sindoor made contact with her skin, she closed her eyes.
I admired her for a moment and then pulled away. She slowly opened her eyes to look at me. I saw the tears full of happiness beginning to fill her eyes.
The priest continued talking for a bit and then he finally said the words I had been waiting to hear for days…
"I now pronounce you husband and wife. These weddings are now complete!"
I heard cheering around me. I stood up and helped Madhu stand.
I turned to look at Malik who was also standing in front of Padmini.
He looked at me and I nodded my head. He nodded his back.
Then suddenly we both picked up our wives in our arms, spun them around, and ran towards our cars, leaving everyone else behind us.
