Chapter 3
Khushi slowly opened her eyes, blinking rapidly to focus her vision, which was oddly blurry. It took her several moments to register the sight before her and when she did, she bolted upright, letting out a shrill scream. The man whose face had just been much too close to her own instinctively jumped back, nearly falling over. He was now standing there with his hand on his heart, looking at her accusingly, as though she had scared him. Khushi cringed away from him. Who was this man?? And why was he in her room? But as she looked around, she realized she was not in her room and the bed she was currently laying in was not her own either. Her stars were not there and her Salman Khan poster was also conspicuously absent. This room was completely sterile, stripped of anything that could be personal. The white walls, the beeping machines.. it looked suspiciously like a hospital ward. She looked down at her arm, which had multiple needles sticking in it and as she felt her head, she realized there was a bandage wrapped around it. She had not noticed the pain racking through her slight frame, in her initial shock at finding an unfamiliar man in what she had assumed to be her room. But now that she had calmed down, she found that she ached all over. She was in acute agony. Everything hurt, from her throbbing feet to her sore head. She looked up at the man again, the only one who could give her answers.
"What happened to me? And who are you?"
NK thought he had prepared himself for this. But the sharp spasm of pain that shot through his heart still left him reeling. She didn't remember him. He was a stranger to her. But he realized that he could not wallow in despair, though he longed to curl up in on himself the way she had done so in the beginning. He had to be there for her again, as he had always been. He was dependable, her one true friend. He could not disappoint her now. He took a deep breath. The doctors had warned him that pushing her to remember would only increase the damage done to her brain. But he couldn't lie to her. He would have to handle this with great delicacy. He decided to just answer her questions, without telling her more than she needed to know.
"You.. you had an.. accident. And I'm Nand Kishore. NK."
"An accident? What? But how?? And what about Jiji? I was on my way to talk to Jeejaji about the dowry. And then.."
Khushi looked up at NK, their faces identical masks of horror.
"The last thing I remember is my sister's wedding."
Oh god. She didn't remember anything. She had forgotten the last two years of her life. And NK didn't have to think long before the implications of that hit him. Nannav. Di. Shyam. None of these names will mean anything to her now.
Khushi watched the play of emotions on the man's expressive face. Shock. Fear. Dismay. Relief. And then somehow, inexplicably, joy. Khushi didn't understand; her mind was in a state of utter confusion. And so she just waited for this man to speak.
NK paused, thinking fast. Though he had initially been appalled that she did not recall any of the past two years, he now recognized that this meant she had a second chance at life now. True, she did not remember him either. But that was a sacrifice that he could willingly accept. He had always only wanted her happiness and this was the golden opportunity to ensure it. She had conveniently forgotten the dark shadows of her carefree life. She was the Khushiji she had once been, before she had been reduced to a shell of her former self. Despite the uncertainty clouding her gaze, he could sense the vitality that had been the essence of this beautiful girl who had exuded a happiness true to her name. This girl was the Khushiji he had fallen in love with. And now, his words had the power to let her live in that innocent world of hers, where there was no deceit, betrayal, and cruel machinations. He had the power to let her stay in that dreamworld, or he could wake her up. He could tell her the truth of the past, everything she had endured, the papers that had caused her current condition. As he looked into her doe-shaped eyes, he imagined he saw a plea in them. It was as though some part of her mind was fully aware of all that had transpired, but denial is always the easier thing to do. Maybe the amnesia was her brain's last defense. Perhaps forgetting was the only way she could survive now.
There is supposedly something called fate. People use that word quite expediently to suit their needs. But fate cannot account for the choices we make. We control our lives, not some external force beyond. Khushi had made her decision when she jumped off that cliff and now NK made his own decision as he answered the plea in her hazel eyes. He would do nothing to endanger the brief respite she had been granted.
