"Arnavji! Arnavji!" came a hoarse whisper in his ear. He flinched in his sleep, snuggling deeper into the pillow, and sighed. He wanted to sleep, dammit.
"Arnavji!" he heard again. Suddenly something clicked in his mind and he jumped up in a sitting position as he realised it was his wife's voice.
"Khushi?" he breathed worriedly. "Kya hua?" he spoke with anxious hurriedness, not giving her the least time to speak for herself. "Sab theek to hai, na? Tumhein kuchh hua to nahin? Aur baby ko?" (What happened? Everything is fine? Did anything happen to you? Or the baby?)
He saw her roll her eyes and stopped blabbering. There was nothing very serious. So? What had she woke him up for? He narrowed his eyes at her sleepily. Damn, he was tired to the bone if she didn't know. First he had had to coax her to bed, make sweetly slow love to her so that she would definitely fall deep asleep, then he had gone to working the room he was setting up for their baby. It was only at three in the morning that he had scrambled back in bed to sleep. When he looked at the clock behind her now, he realised he had not even completed thirty minutes of his sleep.
"Humein ice-cream khaana hai!" she pouted. (I want to eat Ice-cream!)
Arnav rubbed his eyes and tried to pry them open wider. "Abhi?" he choked.
"Haan! Abhi!" she squeaked.
He just took a deep breath and pushed her back on the bed. "Kal subha khareedne chaleinge, ghar par nahin hai." (We'll go tomorrow morning. There is none at home right now.)
But Khushi sat up obstinately. "Nahin, humein abhi chaahiye!" she insisted. "Aisa lagte hai jaise agar humne yeh abhi ke abhi nahin khaaya na, to hum marjaayeinge!" (No, I want it right now! It feels like if I don't eat it right now, I'll die!)
"Shut up, okay?" he snarled angrily as he sprang back to sit on the bed with a fierce scowl. "Dobaara marne ki baat ki na, to- Don't you every dare say that again Khushi Kumaari Gupta Singh Raizada!" (...If you speak of dying again -...)
"Lekin agar humein aisa lagta hai to hum kya karein?" she whined, frowning down at the space between them. She abruptly lifted her head to point a finger at him. "Sab aapki galti hai!" (But what can I do if it feels that way? It's all your fault!)
"What the-? Meri galti?" (... My fault?)
"Haan, aapki! Aap humaare bete ko bilkul apne jaise bana rahe hain!" (Yes, yours! You're making our son just like you!)
Arnav stared at her incredulously. "S'cuse me? Mere jaise? Tumhein kaise pata?" (...Like me? How do you know?)
A small smile tugged at her perfectly kissable mouth. "Din bhar aap hi ki tarha humein sataata rehta hai. Jab bhi aap humse gussa hote ho ya phir hum kuchh aisa karein jisse aapko gussa ho, to yeh humein dhakka maarta hai. Lagega jaise isse pata ho! Aur to aur, abhi humein peanut butter wala ice cream khaane ka jee-tod mann kar raha hai!" (He keeps annoying me all day long. Whenever you are angry or I do something that could make you angry, he kicks me. It's like he knows! And on top of that, I really want peanut butter flavored ice-cream right now!)
He smirked despite his irritation. If what she was saying was really true, the baby did have many points in common with him.
"Chalo," he finally gave in to her and dragged himself off the bed. (Come.)

Arnav desperately tried to ignore her throaty moans as she ate the Ben & Jerry's Peanut Butter Tracks he had managed to find for an exuberant price – which she was unaware of – at one of the tourist shops in the city centre that remained open twenty four hours, while he drove them back home. It was unbelievable how he had had to roam in half of the entire Delhi for some two hours which had been accompanied by his very pregnant wife's droning to get this little tub of ice cream.
"Tumse kissne kaha ke ladka hai?" he asked. (Who said it's a boy?)
Khushi lifted her eyebrows, swallowing another spoonful of the creamy melted peanut flavour. "Kissi ne nahin." (No one.)
"To tumne yeh kyun kaha ke main tumhaare bete ko-" (Then why did you say-)
Her short giggle interrupted him. "Voh iss liye, kyunki humein ek beta chaahiye jo bilkul aapke jaisa ho!" (That's because I want a boy who is exactly like you!)
"Really? Kyun?" (...Why?)
"Taaki humein bhi to pata chale, ke Di ke Chhote bachpan mein kaise the!" (So that I also can get an idea of how Di's Chhote was when he was small!)
He chuckled at her. "Mujhe beti chaahiye." (I want a girl.)
"Kyun?" Khushi gave him an adorable smile and he shook his head. (Why?)
"Voh uss din tumne kaha tha, na? Ek ladki, jo dikhne mein tum lekin bartaav mein main? Kaafi tempting hai!" (Hadn't you said the other day? A girl who looks like you but acts like me? It's quite tempting!)
"Voh bas sapna tha, Arnavji!" she blushed. (It was just a dream, Arnavji!)
Arnav remained silent but he pulled up on the side of the road before turning to look at her, in her eyes earnestly. "Shaayad yeh koyi sapna tha, Khushi, lekin sach bhi to ho sakta hai. Tumhi kehti ho, na? Agar hum apne sapnon mein vishwaas rakkhein, to voh sach ho jaate hain? Chalo, ab yeh bhi aazma kar dekh lete hain." (Maybe, Khushi, but it can become true too. Aren't you the one who said it? If we believe in a dream, we can make it realise? Let's try this out.)
She stared at him dumbfounded. Her husband had never before believed in dreams... "Arnavji-"
"I want a girl like that, Khushi, who is part me part you. Sirf genetically hi nahin, lekin ek aisi tarha to saaf dikhaayi de! Maine isske baare mein pehle kabhi soch nahin tha, but when you said it that day..." (...Not just genetically, but also in a way it's seen! I'd never thought of it before,...)
With a gentle, watery smile, she brought her hand to his stubbled cheek to caress it. Closing his eyes, his leaned into her touch. Unknown to him, Arnav had, for a second, disarmed himself and put his feelings naked on his face. He had been swept away by that image of a child she had given him. An image he had not been able to stop thinking about. An image which was a little Khushi and at the same time a little Arnav.
But this woman he had married was a genius. It was like she had a PhD in the particular subject, Arnav Singh Raizada, normally the most difficult thing in the universe. But she understood him, read him like an open book. Wasn't that why he loved her so much?
