Serial killer of love

Love stories should be a treat to watch on television. But most romances on the Indian screen scream for love and remain unfulfilled? NIDHI MITTAL reports

Love stories are enervating, but do we get enough on primetime television? The serials that start off as love stories gradually end up being like any other family drama. The reason being given is that it is difficult to live up with a love story for long on television, unlike a movie which entails a three-hour drama. But does this justify the wastage of viewers' time and energy spent in following the serial over the years, just to see the two love birds get united in a marital knot, a thing that seldom happens? Shouldn't the makers respect our long hours of TV watching and tired but hopeful eyes?

Kaisa ye Pyaar Hai, on Sony, started off as a beautiful love story. The two characters fell in love while fighting with each other on everything. Millions stayed glued to Sony when Kaisa was on air. It was nice to watch little nok-jhok between the two who made up after every fight. But as things can't go smooth on TV, they got separated a lot of times, only to get together. But all the hopes of seeing them united at the end got washed off. It was bad that after so many months of watching that serial, the lovers still did not get united. Why can't the serial makers give us a flick that has a happy couple, with a 'happily ever after' ending?

"A happy life without any problems is only possible in fairy tales. Real life is not simple. And things have to be dramatised to get more thrill in the story. No one would want to watch a flat story without any twists and turns," says Sunjoy Waddhwa, producer/director, Saat Phere.

This is what the makers tell us. One agrees with them but what about the hopes of seeing the lovers together? And won't a change in the storyline, that all channels follow, suffice? Surely, a change would work with primetime viewers.

Take Kahiin To Hoga. It started off as a perfect love story between Kashish and Sujal. But over the years, she got married three times, one of which was with Sujal, very briefly. The story and the character of Kashish underwent so many twists and turns that today both came across as loony and abnormally righteous. In the entire journey, Kashish does not get united with Sujal, and now she will probably die as the story moves ahead with 20 years.

Finally, the couch potatoes who have remained awake late in the night Monday to Friday for years waiting for the two loverbirds to get together, are now told that Kashish is about to die, Sujal wants someone else and the entire script has changed from a love story to a bad murder mystery. Is that not cheating the eyeballs?

Same is the case with Kasamh Se on Zee where the man you loved more than he loved Bani has now slept with her younger sister, on karva chauth. And that's not enough, he also sleeps with his wife the same night! Here was a man who had made a niche in your heart through his arresting forlornness and his undying love for his wife, here was a man you would vote for as the best husband.

And look what a twisted script-writer did to you. Would you still want to watch this one? From being a romance to getting embroiled in the evil dos of sis-in-law Jigyasa, Kasamh Se is dangling on the verge of insanity - nowhere to go, nothing sane to do. "The relationship between Bani and Jai is smooth right now since she doesn't know about him and her sister's relationship. Problems will again occur between them when she gets to know," says Prachi Desai, playing Bani.

The latest flick on Star One, Saathi Re, too has started off on a similar premise -- it promises to love better than any other serial on the small screen. The girl gets married to someone she doesn't love due to kundali dosh called chadti nagin dosh. Of course, she has this lover boy waiting in the wings, signalling yet another triangle. Enough of such geometrical figures.

On the other hand, Jab Love Hua on Zee gives a ray of hope as the two, Raghu and Aanya, plan to get married and according to the actors they will tie the nuptial knot too. "Though our families are creating problems, we will get married," says Priya Badlani aka Aanya.

Well, if that happens that will surely be a breath of fresh air. After seeing so much of evil everywhere on TV, this will be a treat for the eyes. But we should get very hopeful, as even that will linger on to getting some complications in the loved relationship.

Bad episode is an understatement.... it's all the way downhill for KS since the JP connection. 🤢 🤢

And the article is right in saying that all the serials go the same way ... WHY do we even bother seeing them beyond the first 3 months because after that it is truly a case of "seen one seen all" ... 😕 😕
