Dear friends!!

Just now saw an article on Mahatma Gandhi and Nobel prize.

Please read the article:

Gandhi deserved the Nobel: Lundestad

NDTV Correspondent

Tuesday, October 17, 2006 (New Delhi):

Geir Lundestad, secretary to the Nobel prize committee, says, "Not giving Mahatma Gandhi the Nobel peace prize is the biggest mistake."

He also added that there was an intention later, but since Gandhi passed away in 1948, the idea of conferring the Mahatma with the Nobel peace prize was dropped.

"The coming generations will scarcely believe that such a man once walked the earth in flesh and blood," said Albert Einstein about Mahatama Gandhi:

It seems that Einstein's prophecy is coming true. Ahimsa and Satyagrah are as relevant to the 21st century as they were in the first half of the 20th century.

It's perhaps because of this that the Nobel committee, which awards the Nobel peace prize, has now admitted that it made a mistake by not awarding Bapu with the much sought after prize.

Nominated five times

Gandhi was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize on five different occasions. The first time in 1937, then in 1938, 1939, 1947 and just a few days before his assassination in 1948, but he never won.

At the time, the Nobel committee said that it did not consider the Mahatma worthy of the Nobel peace prize, but it seems that over time, the committee has realised its mistake.

When the Dalai Lama won the Nobel prize in 1989, the then chairman of the Nobel committee said that that was a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, an admission perhaps that the Mahatma's stature was far above the recognition and glory of any award.
Now please kindly answer my questions:

Do Mahatma's need some awards,prizes ?

Do U feel these awards are genuine?

Does it make any impact on the adoration u have on the great people u admire if they get the award/ if they don't get the award?

BTW how many think the value of Bharat Ratna got degraded after it was awarded to Shri Rajiv Gandhi!!!!!!!!!!

Please feel free to drop ur posts!!!

Cheers,

Mythili

Personally i dont think it would matter to him. He was someone who knew who he was and didnt need an award to motivate him or to boost his ego.

No, I dont think so. You are calling them "Mahatma" how can they be lured by materialistic things?😳

In Gandhiji's case well he is bestowed with far more glory than the Nobel Prize ever could .

Do U feel these awards are genuine?

Optimism makes me feel so, but pragmatism makes me think otherwise.

Does it make any impact on the adoration u have on the great people u admire if they get the award/ if they don't get the award?

This depends on the individual in question and how he is percieved publicly.

BTW how many think the value of Bharat Ratna got degraded after it was awarded to Shri Rajiv Gandhi!!!!!!!!!!

No comments. Madam naraaz ho jayegi!šŸ˜‰ šŸ˜†

I think the great souls can do without the awards very well, but these awards also serve as a reminder to the public.
And the public might need such reminder of higher goals desperately, every now and then (will the public, incl me, ever be uplifted though?)

But I can imagine several great souls to be still having some all human emotions, they might be enjoying a little after all.

The recognition for their organisation and their workers, which comes along with the award, will be appreciated by all of them, I think.

- I can't say for all mahan atama but for Gandhiji, I don't think he did anything to get an award or prize. I dont think he "needed" any awards.

Do U feel these awards are genuine?
- Genuine! umm depends what exactly you mean by genuine?
Like if you mean the panel is genuine enough - in that case I am not too sure about as each individual have different value to judge other individual or people
If you mean one who get award are genuine and deserve the award? -this too depend upon selection of nominees.

Does it make any impact on the adoration u have on the great people u admire if they get the award/ if they don't get the award?
- no, never.

BTW how many think the value of Bharat Ratna got degraded after it was awarded to Shri Rajiv Gandhi!!!!!!!!!!
- My previous answer should answer this question only change would be "impact on detestation".

From "The Hindu " newspaper:

Gandhi not getting the Nobel was the biggest omission'

Amit Baruah OSLO: It's not often that you get candid admissions. Or that big institutions have got it wrong. A group of Indian journalists heard both at the headquarters of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awards the annual Nobel Peace Prize. "Our record is far from perfect and not giving Mahatma Gandhi the Nobel Peace Prize was the biggest omission," Geir Lundestad, permanent secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, said on Monday. Speaking in the Nobel Committee room, where the Peace Prize for 2006 for Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh was decided by the six-member panel in September, Mr. Lundestad referred to Mahatma Gandhi not receiving the Nobel time and again. And the omission takes on real meaning when you look around and see the black and white photographs of all Peace Prize winners since 1904 adorning the walls. But there's no picture of the "half-naked fakir" as Winston Churchill described the man who led India to freedom. Mahatma Gandhi was to receive the Prize in 1948, but his assassination prevented the award from coming to him, Mr. Lundestad maintained. "But that's no excuse for not giving Gandhi the Prize," he explained. According to him, Mahatma Gandhi was considered not just in 1948, but in 1947, in 1946 and twice previously. "Serious consideration was given to him on all those occasions," he maintained. When pressed further, Mr. Lundetsad said that war breaking out between the newly created states of India and Pakistan could have been a complicating factor for Mahatma Gandhi not being presented with the Prize in 1948. He also conceded that the Nobel Committee was "Western-oriented" till 1960. According to Mr. Lundestad, the Committee felt so terrible it had not conferred the prize on Mahatma Gandhi that it kept looking at "other Indians" over the years. Asked who the other Indians were, Mr. Lundestad revealed that Jawaharlal Nehru and Acharya Vinoba Bhave were those considered. According to him, the Committee was governed by "common sense" and "good political judgement" when deciding on a possible Peace Prize winner. "There are many roads to peace and that's why there are different types of laureates," he stated, referring to the 2006 prize going to Mr. Yunus and the Grameen Bank.

Asked about the Prize being given to Shirin Ebadi of Iran in 2003, he said her award showed that there were those in the "Muslim world" who worked for human rights and democracy
