Chapter 8
Eight years ago
I have to meet her. Who is she? What did the announcer say her name was... Hmm.. Yes Aarti...Aarti something...Aarti... Sharma... Yes that's it Aarti Sharma. Where did she head off after the performance? She just vanished. Damn! I need to find her. I need to be near her, speak to her, and get to know her. Oh! Yes. She was ... she was ...something else. I don't know... I felt something... right here in my heart. This has to mean something. This unknown attraction... this feeling ... it's so new... so unknown yet I am sure this is something very very important. Something which I cannot and will not ignore.
Yash wanted to look for Aarti, RIGHT NOW. But he held back, he pushed his urgency aside. He was there to do a job not run off as he pleased. His professionalism came in the way of what he really wanted to do. So he made himself wait, even if every second of it was killing him. Finally when he could get away he rushed towards the change rooms where the performers returned to change once they were off-stage. He poked his nose in each of the five rooms there, apologised to the people there who were in various stages of undress, yet there was no sign of her anywhere he searched. On his way back he saw her again from far. She did not notice his presence. She seemed pre-occupied as if searching for someone. She had changed into casual wear and had removed the make-up and jewellery that she had worn for her dance but even without them, her impact on Yash was no less the second time too.
Before Yash could call out he heard her speak to someone.
"Prashanth... so how was it? Did you see the performance or did you slip away to have a smoke with your friends?" Aarti asked with a bated breath just to get a favourable response out of the other person but at the same time trying to act nonchalant.
"No sweetheart I would not have missed out your performance for the world and you know I don't smoke.. well...almost." said the man who approached her slowly with a grin on his face.
"Now come here and give your biggest fan a hug" added the man whom Aarti had just addressed as Prashanth.
"Oh Prashanth I agree we are now engaged but sometimes you just cross the limits. You have no sense of time or place" responded Aarti with mock reproach.
"Now hurry, the van that has to drop us is about to leave, we need to get to the main entrance fast" she said and pulled the man along to walk with her.
"Bossy as ever. Wait till we get married young lady then I will show you who the boss is?" the man said looping his hand in hers and taking her away.
Yash watched the entire interaction, he could not move, his palms were fisted yet his eyes refused to look away. He could still hear their giggles as they shared some light-hearted moments. But Yash stood where he was till he could see the last of Aarti disappearing out of the gate with her fianc next to her.
No... it can't be... How can fate play such a cruel joke on me? Show me a glimpse of heaven only to make it unreachable. She is engaged, to be married and very much in love with the man she was with. How could a woman whom I had seen just minutes ago cause me such pain? How could her being with another man cause this burning rage... this jealousy in me? I have to stop this. This is illogical, unexplainable and unacceptable.

That night when Yash returned home he was surprised to see his mother still awake and wanting to have a word with him.
"Yash beta... how was your day? Did the event go well?" asked a very concerned Gayatri.
"Yes maa it was successful. But you should not have been awake waiting for me, maa. It's not good for your health to do so." Yash gently reprimanded his mother.
"Beta this was such an important day for you, how could I have slept not knowing how it went for you? Besides I have something important to speak with you. But perhaps it will keep for tomorrow. Did have your dinner by the way? If not just give me five minutes I will get it ready for you" Gayatri started to move but Yash stopped her.
"Don't trouble yourself unnecessarily maa. I had my dinner with our crew. But please let me know what you wanted to discuss, now is a good time as any"
"Well... you see ...we ... your Bauji and I, as you know are looking for a prospective bride for you. And we think we have found just the girl for you. Here is her photo. Her name is Arpita and she is a very good girl from a very good family. Why don't you have a look and let us know if we should proceed further with this" Gayatri held out the photo for Yash's inspection.
"Maa I don't think I need to look at the photo. Whatever you decide is going to be for the best. So please do whatever you think is right. Now if you don't mind it has been a long day and I think even you too should get some sleep." Yash held his mother's hand yet did not bother to take the photo and then got up to take leave.
That whole night Yash lay awake in the bed thinking about that elusive woman who had unknowingly caused such havoc in his heart.
Present Day Bhopal

"Yash bhaiya and bhabi are arriving maaji "said Ram Dulare hurriedly informing the household of the eminent arrival.
"What, this soon? We were not expecting them back for another two days, this is surprising. Vidhi go and get the Aarti thali ready they are coming back from a long trip we should welcome them properly" said Gayatri overcoming her initial surprise to recover to do her duties as the head matriarch of the family.
Yash kept looking far away when they got the Aarti ready. He was seething with anger. Besides him stood a subdued Aarti. Yet the family members did not sense anything amiss, till he placed his palm on the burning Aarti and blew it off.
"What are you doing Yash? It is inauspicious to do so? What is the matter with you?" questioned Gayatri who was take a back by what Yash did. Upon getting no response out of him she asked "What is wrong with him Aarti? Why is he behaving like this? "
"I don't know maaji. He has been like this since we left Mumbai" replied a shaken Aarti.
" Yashji... Yashji... please tell me what is the matter why are you behaving like this? Is it something I did? Please let me know I will correct it?" Aarti started crying and tried to make Yash answer to her question by holding his arm.
When she made a move to grab his arm he forcibly pushed her aside.
"Yash have you lost your mind? How can you behave like this in front of your kids? Aarti is your wife..." Suraj Pratap intervened when he saw his son become so out of control.
"She is not my WIFE. How many times do you want me to repeat it? We married only and only for the sake of our kids. Why don't you people understand that? The sooner you all understand that the better it is for everyone" with that he marched inside the house leaving everyone shell-shocked.
