Thanks a bunch for all your notes and messages. I'm fine now. My mother who lives with me currently, is still upset by the turn of events and she is still in mourning.
I was not in the frame of mind to update for the first 2 weeks. Just when I was ready to update, a couple of silent readers who have been reading my FF, decided that it would be fun to mock my cousin's death in another thread in another forum. That really demotivated me from updating for a while. If you feel disappointed by my note or by my views on any topic, please use the PM service to communicate with me.
Leaving that aside, I have edited this chapter after a 'longish break'. So bear with me until I get up to speed. I also promise to read and comment on the many pending FF updates of my friends.

Chapter 7-

* See note above

This update goes out to my friend Juhi aka Expelliarmus who is writing an Arhi fanfic which is based on molestation. Its one of the most emotionally intense stories I have read to date. Give it a read HERE

'But why did Arnav refuse?' Kushi asked.

'Kushi, Arnav doesn't believe in the concept of Love or marriage.'

Kushi was slightly startled to hear this from Payal. To her when a man and woman fell in love, they got married, had children and spent the rest of their lives together. She found it difficult to even embrace live-in relationships that culminated in a marriage, let alone relationships where there was no love or life long commitment. She just couldn't get her head around the idea of such relationships.

'Payal, excuse me for asking you this, but why doesn't he believe in love or marriage? He is happy to date women but not fall in love or get married? It makes absolutely no sense.'

Payal started to wonder why Kushi was getting so very involved in Arnav's life and his choices but decided it was probably due to the shock of hearing about such complicated relationships.

'I honestly don't know Kushi. I have asked Akaash the same question a couple of times and neither does Akaash know. I guess Arnav likes living alone and prefers solitude. He doesn't want the baggage of a committed long-term relationship. But at this point I can only speculate.' Payal replied.

'Baggage of a long-term relationship? When did the ups and downs of a relationship become baggage. Isn't that what life-long companionship is all about, being there for each other through the ups and downs? I just don't understand why a man who is as nice as Arnav would never want to fall in love or get married.' Kushi said.

'Kushi as I said its his life and his choice. I really don't know more.' Payal said as she started getting bored of discussing Arnav's relationship issues with Kushi.

Kushi quickly understood Payal's tone and said, 'Payal, I understand. I'm sorry if I sounded a little pushy with my questions', as she hugged Payal. Payal decided it was the right time to tell Kushi about NKay's very obvious interest in her. She told Kushi about her chat with Nkay and told her she was likely to be asked out.

Kushi answered 'Payal, I hardly know NKay. And I'm not sure if I want to go out on a date with him or for that matter anyone at the moment. I don't feel comfortable with the whole dating scene.'

'Kushi, NKay is a sweet guy. I'm sure you will like him. He isn't going to start kissing you or anything on your first date. So there is no question of feeling uncomfortable. In fact you will enjoy spending time with him. He is a riot. I think you should go out with him once before you make up your mind. Even if you are not interested in him, that's fine. But at least you will make another friend in Delhi.' Payal pleaded.

'I'll think about it Payal,' Kushi promised. With that Payal called it a night and went into her room.

Kushi's thoughts went back to her discussion with Payal on Arnav. She had acknowledged her crush on Arnav and although she was sure nothing was going to come out of it, she was still disappointed to note that Arnav wasn't the kind of guy who believed in love or marriage. And those are exactly the things she wished for in her life. A husband who loved her and a family that she could cherish. 'I must stay away from him,' she made up her mind, before deciding to call it a night.

The following day which was a Sunday turned out to be a relaxing day for Kushi. Akaash and Payal decided to spend the day at the club whereas Kushi decided to laze around. She also spoke with her parents at length who were very concerned for her safety after they heard about the gang rape incident in Delhi. Sashi and Garima pleaded with Kushi to come back home. Kushi stood her ground and they let her off after convincing her to ride a bike to work which they decided to gift her.

--------------------------------------------------------

Monday at work turned out to be busy. Meera briefed Kushi on the collateral they needed to organise for the event in London. She told Kushi that she was going to let her run with it as the rest of the team were busy with other events.

Just after lunch NKay popped by. Kushi knew what to expect. NKay had got some sweet boxes from Lucknow for everyone at work, but reserved a special sweet box just for Kushi. He felt it would leave a very good impression. Kushi although initially hesitant was very happy to see the sweets from Lucknow. She opened the box excitedly and started eating the sweets. NKay decided it was the best time to ask her out for a coffee.

'Looks like you like the sweets, do you like your coffee as much as your sweets?'
NKay asked in a flirty tone.

Kushi swallowed her sweet, not sure how to respond to the very obvious question which was likely to follow.

'There is new cafe near my place, not only do they make fantastic coffee, but they also serve the world's best walnut cake, want to go sometime?' NKay asked hopefully.

Kushi blurted 'Are you asking me out on a date NKay?'

'It depends on your answer Kushi. If you say yes, its a date. If you say no its just two friends having coffee.' Nkay winked.

'Coffee sounds like a great idea but I'm not sure Nkay. I'm just not in that place currently. I'm not sure if I want to go on date.' Kushi answered nervously.

'Any Boyfriends?' Nkay asked.

'No, no! Of course not.' Kushi replied loudly to make a point.

'OK, how about we do this? We will have some coffee and talk just like two friends, nothing more nothing less. I won't impose on you and I will harbor no expectations. And yes I promise to keep my hands to myself.' NKay said smiling and flashing his cute dimples.

'If thats the case, sure.' Kushi replied.

'Shall we go to the cafe on Wednesday after work. I can drive you there and drop you home.' NKay said. Kushi agreed.

NKay left her desk deciding to make the whole thing comfortable and a pleasant experience for Kushi so that she wouldn't refuse him again when he asked her out.

Kushi sat back and started wondering if she was doing the right thing. 'Its just a coffee Kushi, its not like he is going start kissing you or anything. Plus Payal knows him well and thinks highly of him.' She told herself.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

By the time Kushi was finished it was already 8.30 pm. She decided to call an auto home as Payal was working on an event and would get home very late. As she was waiting on the road for an auto, Arnav who was on his way back home stopped his car and decided to offer her a lift home.

'Kushi get in, let me drop you home.' Arnav said as he brought the windows of his car down.

'Its okay Arnav, I'll take an auto home.' Kushi replied masking her surprise of having seen him on the road.

'Don't be silly Kushi. Your home isn't too far from my place.' Arnav insisted.

'Arnav thanks, but I really don't want to bother you. I'll be fine.' Kushi replied, standing her ground.

'Kushi, either you come inside willingly or I'll come and drag you inside. The choice is yours.' Arnav said. Kushi blushed and she got into the car.

Arnav decided to strike up a conversation to keep them company through the drive. 'So how was your day Kushi, how are you getting on?'

'I had a good day thanks for asking Arnav. Meera has given me the responsibility of managing the marketing collaterals for the event in London. I got started today, so all very exciting.' Kushi replied

'The event is a big deal for AR. This is a great opportunity for you to not only learn but also to make a mark. So good luck. Don't hesitate to drop me an email if you have any questions, although Meera is your best stop for all questions relating to Marketing.' Arnav said. Kushi nodded.

'So do you take an auto to home everyday, do you feel safe?' Arnav asked with the horrific rape case in Delhi at the back of his mind. Akaash and he had decided to review the travel policy for their staff who worked over-time, in light of the safety issues for women in Delhi.

'Payal normally picks me up, but today she is busy. Anyhow, my parents are gifting me a bike after the recent incident in Delhi. They are very concerned for my safety. The whole incident was horrific' Kushi replied.

'I was appalled too by the rape incident. I think a lot needs to change in our society. Stringent laws and punishment is one thing, but on the other hand we need to change our mindset. We should teach children to respect individuals- whether they are Men or Women. For all the talks of living in the 21st century its a shame how badly we treat women in this country. We talk about independence and liberation yet we expect them to cook for us, do our laundry and sacrifice their career to bring up children. We should treat the woman of our house as equals to begin with. Until we don't treat men and women equally some men will continue to look down on women and such incidents will happen. But everything aside what those men did was barbaric. I'd like to believe that I'm a non-violent kind of a person, but even I wish they would face a slow and painful death.' Arnav said sounding extremely angry.

Kushi agreed, 'I know Arnav, the punishment should fit their crime. I also wholeheartedly agree with your views on the need to change our mindset. Charity being at home indeed.'

Kushi realised she respect grew for the man that Arnav was and for his views.

While she was thinking Arnav asked, 'So are your parents are very protective of you?'

'Yes they are. I'm the only child. I was born 11 years after their marriage. So they always look out for me.' Kushi replied.

'Do you enjoy the attention?' Arnav asked

'Not really, I love them to bits, but I'm at a stage in my life where I want to live by myself and do something on my own. I know its not going to be easy. I have never cleaned the floors of my home nor have I washed any utensils. For the first time I'm doing such things in my life. I won't lie, it's difficult. But I would have it no other way. I want to do something different with my life, you know. I have always had my parents do everything for me. My daadi made me breakfast everyday, my father would drop and pick me up wherever I needed to go, my mom always helped me with my studies. I want to do things on my own, do mistakes, learn from them. I just want to live life my own way. Which is why I moved to Delhi.' Kushi answered excitedly.

Arnav liked her child like enthusiasm, 'I completely understand. We have one life, we should live it the way we want. I'm glad you decided to move out and face life heads on. Trust me it will be worth it. And when the going gets tough, you have friends like me.'

Arnav held her palm in a reassuring way just for a few seconds. Before Kushi could even react, he retracted his hand. It is only then Kushi realised that were already home and that they had been talking for a while.

'Shucks! I lost track of time and where we are. Thanks for the ride, Arnav. Hope you drive home safe.' She said.

'You are welcome Kushi and don't hesitate to call me if you need anything.' Arnav said. Kushi nodded and then she got out of the car. Arnav left and Kushi opened the doors to her flat once again feeling happy.

Khushi might never have expected this kind of helpful gesture from Arnav. Well I can see that this Arnav is different as I did not see any pushing and pulling as yet.
Nice update.
