hi guys, i have a doubt. i first thought of posting this in the topic where religion pertaining questions are asked. but what i wanted to know was more on the socio-cultural side.we all know that islam permits more than one wife as long as certain conditions are kept.but what i wanted to know, is whether it is accepted socially or not.for eg in qh, haseena is using the fact that rashid has another family to either blackmail them or break off the relation.why are they hiding this fact as if they are ashamed of it?is this attitude restricted to india only ,or it is accepted in other countries? i dont mean to offend anyone just was curious.if anybody feels offended then i apologise.

That depends upon the way u take it or treat the wife or husband ...Not only in Islam bt also in many other cultures and religion one can marry more than once but like after divorce or after the death of the spouse its the social right of the person...
Secondly if u are refering to the muslim society in particular then also as far as all the legal ways are kept in consideration one can have two wives and it is acceptable all over except India in-particular and some what it is because the majority is of Other religions in which two wives at the same time are not allowed so when u are living in such society which has certain particular norms and values even if u belong to some other religion if u donot know ur religions that much strongly u get influenced at times...

Haseena is not using the fact that Rashid has an other family too she is using the fact that they lied to her and at some point she is right too...they shdnt hav lied to her as far as i hav seen SHIREEN WANTED TO TELL THEM BUT RAZIA STOPPED HER AS RAZIA'S INTENTIONS WERE WRONG SHE ALWAYS WANTED TO HAV SOME RIFT BETWEEN NIGHAT'S INLAWS AND RASHID KHAN TO MAKE PLACE FOR HER OWN DAUGHTER IN THE HOUSE AS HASEENA CAN ONLY BE CALMED DOWN BY MONEY WHICH HUMERA'S FATHER HAS...They are not ashamed of it as Shireen and Rashid didnt want to hide it ...its the other game around...

hope i hav given u a satisfactory answer

Islam permits 4 wives but with a lot of terms and conditions out of which one important condition is that financial assistance can be provided to all the wives. Also,a man needs to seek permission from his first wife before marrying the second one.One can't marry a second lady just for fun, pleasure and selfish reasons.there are many clauses for the second, third and fourth marriage in Islam.Polygamy is socially acceptable in many countries except India.Divorce is not a necessary condition for second marriage in Islam as per Islamic Sharia law.

Haseena is a money digger. She needs a weak point of Rashid's family so that she can raise her demands to the peak.Rashid's family is hiding this fact because polygamy is not socially acceptable in India.People bad mouth about a man who has 2/more wives.that is why the family hid this important fact from Haseena. She uses this blackmailing as a means to get all her selfish reasons fulfilled.she is ready to break the engagement with the smallest issue like the one that happened during the garment purchase sticker/mehfil-e-saugat nazar utaro rasm.

I hope your doubts are clear now.

Don't worry dear. You have simply asked a question. You have not passed a judgement about a certain religious practice. So please don't worry about offending anyone. However, you could have raised your doubts in the sticky thread related to religious queries as well.
But never mind.
I hope you are having a nice time on the forum.
Take care!

In short, nope. It is not socially acceptable even in religious and/or conservative Muslim families. Rather, it is a stigma. My educated guess is that a man who indulges in this is most likely to feel like an outcast (which is why when they do it, they do it on the down low) unless he's wealthy..coz like most things in life, money talks.

And as far as Haseena is concerned, what they are showing is pretty accurate. The majority of families will have a strong objection in marrying their son/daughter into a household where polygamy is practiced.

i guess its just abt the mentality Islam permits it and an islamic society permits it too...as its the personal matter of the person...It is acceptable and practised In Saudia Arabia , Dubai ...even in Pakistan ...till u r providing ur wives the equal rights financially n socially...
