Serendipity: (Noun) The occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way: "A fortunate stroke of serendipity".
Have you ever felt like one moment; just one interaction with someone linked them to you for the rest of your life and beyond? It's like just that one look makes sparks fly, and the whole world spins around you. Maybe it wasn't like that, maybe there was an unbreakable bond except you just didn't know it. Isn't this the real story behind two star cross'd lovers? You're not lovers until every incomplete picture is painted, and every opened door is closed, forever. It is then when the heart begins to mend, ready to venture into another sacred bond, into another adventure.
They ran pulling their weight through the mistiness of the early morning. The sun was just about to rise, making its presence into the silent world. Their breathing became heavy as they ran towards her house, faint footsteps of the night before were marked. He held her waist, helping her up as they climbed the same tree. She laughed a little, finding the circumstance a little too hilarious as he hushed her with his fingers to his lips. She quietened at once but her mischief was still shown in the sparkle of her brown eyes. He smiled, his eyes twinkling in delight as she climbed over the window edge, into the warmth of her room. She held his hand, pulling him to come in as he shook his head.
"No Maanvi, I have to go. " He whispered with a hint of sadness. "I can't believe that we fell asleep on the bench. Thank God we came back before anyone saw us, otherwise…" His speech halted. He shook his head, trying to contain his short laughter. "I can't believe that I actually got out of the Palace unseen, and now I have to go back until someone sees me sneaking back him."
"Virat." Maanvi found herself holding his hand just as he started to climb down. He stopped before pulling up so that she could talk to him. "Thank you." She whispered.
"Thank you? For what?"
"For telling me everything about you, for letting me in…for being everything."
"I told you things even my family didn't know…" He said softly as she nodded thinking about his child. He pulled a smile as he looked at her face, "But I don't know why…you just seem like someone I can trust." The hand that was wired around his wrist started to open as he looked down, holding her own hands and tightening it. "I should be the one to say thank you…for believing in me, for allowing me to trust you….for being everything." He smiled at her similar words.
Just then the door began to open as Maanvi pulled her hands out of his and quickly closed the curtains. Her heart skipped a beat, worrying if someone had saw Virat.
"Maanvi? You awake?" Pinky said as she came into the room. She smiled, walking over to her daughter. "I would have thought you'd be sleeping till now, after all before marriage you used to sleep until late." She let out a laugh as Maanvi peered over the curtains trying to see her husband. "But then again everyone changes after marriage." Pinky fiddled about with Maanvi's clothes, placing them into her suitcase.
"Ma?" Maanvi held the clothes and started to fold them into the suitcase in haste. "Don't worry, I'll do this."
Pinky shook her head. "No, no. I'll do it, after all you should rest before you have to go back." Maanvi gave her an uneasy smile as Pinky started to work. She rolled her eyes at her mother whilst making sure that she doesn't go near the window.
"Oh look at this!" Pinky said, walking towards the window. "The curtains are still closed." She laughed as Maanvi tried to walk over to stop her. She was too late. The curtains opened to allow the bright sunshine in, illuminating the room. Pinky breathed out, as the cool wind from outside entered in. "Vaah! How nice is the weather today?"
Maanvi creased her forehead wondering where Virat went. She became angry thinking that he had left without saying goodbye to her. "Maanvi, I've finished packing. Now quickly get dressed and come downstairs, it's time for breakfast." She stopped before caressing Maanvi's cheek. "I can't believe that my little girl has gotten so big now that she is coming back to her own house." She sniffed as Maanvi smiled. "Always be happy okay? May Virat always keep you smiling." She sniffed before replying with a rushed bye before the tears came.
Maanvi sighed, turning back to the window. "Where did you go Virat?" She said to herself. She sighed again, before turning around back into her room.
"I'm here." A voice whispered back. She creased her forehead in confusion, turning around to see no one there.
"Am I dreaming or what?" She looked around but couldn't see him. She pinched herself. "Ow! Looks like I'm going crazy, seriously." She chuckled.
"Maanvi!" The voice called out again. She looked around but couldn't see where the voice was coming from. "Maanvi! Here! In the tree!" She looked up and saw her husband holding onto the tree branch, making sure that he doesn't fall.
"Virat!" She called out, before biting her tongue for calling so loudly. "What are you doing here?" She whispered.
"I'm having picnic with the monkeys," He rolled his eyes. "What do you think I was doing?"
"I thought you left without saying goodbye…" She faded to a halt.
"I would never do that…" She smiled at his words. "Ma always said that it was rude to." She scowled at his cheek.
"Bye!" She spat out before turning away.
"Maanvi, wait." He said before suddenly slipping. He let out a short hiss as he managed to catch himself before he fell. Maanvi hurriedly ran back, shouting his name. Her heart began to pang, scared that something might have happened to him.
"Virat?! Are you okay?" She said quickly. She looked at him, blood coming from his leg to where he had hurt himself. She wanted to reach out to him but stopped as her mother came back into the room.
"Maanvi? Is everything alright?" Pinky said concerned. "You called out for Virat…" She looked out of the window but Maanvi stopped her.
"Actually Ma, I just thought that something bad had happened that's why…" She gave her a smile, but Pinky wasn't too sure. She decided to let the matter go, not wanting to waste another minute. "Tik hai, quickly get ready." She scolded as she closed the door. Maanvi breathed a sigh of relief as she looked back at the tree but saw it was empty. She gave an uneasy smile, knowing that Virat had left. She felt uneasy knowing that he was hurt.
She quickly got dressed and walked down to see Shiv on the phone. "Okay fine, don't worry Mission Get Together will commence!" He said happily. Maanvi frowned, wondering who he was talking to. She knew everything about him but couldn't help but feel something was amiss.
He chuckled as he turned the phone and turned around, bashing straight into his friend. "Urm…Maanvi…" He hesitated. "Good morning." He gave her a smile, a fake smile as Maanvi noted.
She nodded. "Who were you talking to?"
He gulped. "A friend…"
"Which friend?" She replied, knowing very well who his each and every friend were.
Hesitating he tried to make up an answer on the spot. "Er, a friend. You won't know them."
"So a new friend?" He nodded, smiling. "And you haven't told me about your new friend yet – why?"
"Please Maanvi, do I seriously need to tell you everything about my life?"
"Shiv…I know everything about you. What is all this secrecy about now? And besides, whats this Mission Get together? Huh? What are you playing at?"
Shiv hissed wondering what to say. He wasn't a very good liar. He scratched his head nervously. "Er…"
"Maanvi di! You're here? Come on everyone is waiting for you." Daboo came into the hallway, and pulled Maanvi by the arm. She gave Shiv a stern look as she went, him following slowly behind.
"Shiv, I won't let you go that easily." She thought to herself.
Beeji and Madan sat at the table whilst Pinky aligned the plates on the table. Maanvi watched in awe as a number of her favourite dishes were served. "This much food?" She gasped as she sat down without saying hello. Everyone smiled at her behaviour, somewhat happy that their daughter was back even if she was gone for a few days.
"And you have to eat everything. I made everything for you." Pinky scolded. "Or else you'll leave with me upset." Maanvi pulled a face before getting up and hugging her mother.
"Aw, you know I don't like anyone upset. But don't worry, I'll eat everything!"
"And leave nothing for us?" Shiv smirked as he sat besides Maanvi's chair.
Maanvi sat down and pulled a face at Shiv. "Of course! Didn't you hear Ma made Everything for me, just me and me." Shiv reached over to take a piece of bread when Maanvi smacked his hand. "Not for you." She took the piece of bread and gobbled it up. Shiv let out a pretentious sigh as he tried to steal food off Maanvi's plate. Beeji watched, her heart warming to see her granddaughter back to her mischievous self: not that anything had happened as such. She smiled as the father and daughter duo bonded together against Shiv as they tried to hide food from the friend. She couldn't help but laugh as the moment seemed perfect, just like a picture perfect moment.
It had taken him some time but Virat had managed to sneak into the Palace, courtesy of a sleepy driver who didn't bother him and the hustle of the servant's quarters early in the morning. It meant one thing: he had managed to sneak in without being caught. And for that, it was a mission success. He hadn't even realised his leg was stinging as he ran back to the Palace, after all if he got caught then Maanvi would have gotten caught. It wasn't a bad deed as such; it just meant that there would be a lot of questions to answer. And that was something he seriously didn't want to get through as it would mean he would have to indulge into his past again, and to be honest Virat had already let someone special into his life. And he wanted it to stay that way.
Managing to sneak into his room, Virat uncovered the small ribbon that he had managed to find to cover the wound. It was a small cut but would soon become infected if it wasn't taken care off properly. He washed the excess blood off and covered it with antiseptic before applying a plaster over it. It was lucky that the cut was just above his ankle and would be hidden with his trousers otherwise it would be pretty difficult to explain where it had come from.
The door knocked and Tarun the Butler entered. He bowed in front of the Prince as Virat gave his expected eye roll. He seriously did dislike all this. "Sir, Prince Viren is calling you down as soon as you're ready." Tarun gave Virat a sincere smile, before glancing at his tousled hair and tired appearance.
"Looks like Sir hasn't slept all night. Sad, maybe he's missing Maanvi Madam." Tarun thought as Virat gave him a look.
"I'll be there." He gestured the Butler away as he turned around and looked at himself in the mirror. The first thing he noticed was how messy his hair was. He groaned, if there was one thing that he disliked it was if his hair was not looking perfect. And this was one of those days. He yawned, stretching his arms before jumping into the shower.
He let the warm water run down his back and defined torso, before lathering his hair with his special shampoo. He closed his eyes, letting the water fall from the shower head. He brushed the shampoo through his hair, making sure that it was cleaned properly. Once cleansed, Virat quickly wore his fresh clothes and reapplied the plaster on his wound before racing downstairs. He was instantly greeted by the number of servants but as usual he ignored their bows and curtsies.
"Hey bro!" Viren called out as Virat took a seat opposite his brother at the breakfast table. He gave a quick smile to his mother, aunt and grandfather who seemed slightly peculiar about the younger Vadhera's behaviour. He seemed to be radiating: something must have happened, they all thought.
"Virat? Is everything alright?" Queen Vanshika asked as she sat besides the Earl, who sat at the Head of the table. Opposite her was Swamini who was looking at Virat, her mouth gawped open.
Virat nodded. "Of course, Ma. What happened to me?"
"I don't know…" She replied. "You seem different."
Virat shrugged as he took a bite of his bread and sipped his juice. Viren looked at Jeevika and gave her a confused look. "Is it me or does Virat seem different to you?" He whispered.
Jeevika glanced at her devar and shrugged. "I don't know, he seems happier?" Viren nodded, not taking his eyes of his brother.
The absentminded brother looked up to see his family members, even the strict Swamini look at his in awe. He gulped. "Does everyone know what happened last night?" He gave them a slight smile to calm his sudden nervousness. "Urm, is everything alright?" He looked at each of them confused.
A moment of silence went past in which Virat looked at his family and they looked at him, both completely confused.
"So…did you do something new with you hair?" Viren asked, trying to ease the awkwardness.
Virat fiddled with his damp hair before shaking his head. "Not really…" Becoming cautious, he brushed his hair back with his hand whilst Swamini rolled her eyes at the Prince getting obsessive over his hair.
"Virat." Swamini called out. "Today, as soon as you bring Maanvi home there'll be a public conference to introduce her to Chandrilasia. I hope you'll be ready for that."
Virat nodded. "Okay Buaji."
Viren looked at Jeevika before glancing over to Swamini. "Er, Badi Ma?" She looked at him. "What time is this conference?" He gave her an uneasy smile. "Looks like our plan will be thwarted again!" He thought.
"In the evening, that way everything will be sorted." She replied. "Why? Is there something wrong?"
"No no." Viren replied hastily. "No problem at all."
Viren fiddled in his seat wondering what to do as he gave Jeevika a sympathetic look. "Urm…so I was thinking that we haven't gone out in a long time, should we…go out?" His nervousness overcame his speech as the room suddenly went quiet. "I mean, Jeevika and I." He said the last line standing up.
Jeevika coughed as she quickly stood up. "And Virat!"
The Earl gave the Royal couple a strange look, "Today? But today is the conference."
"Exactly Dadaji!" Viren replied. Virat gave his brother a look, wondering what was going on. "The conference is late in the evening as Badi Ma said. So we should be able to go and come back before that."
"No, absolutely not. Today is such a big day and especially as we're going to be presenting the younger Vadhera Bahu. No, not today." The Earl replied.
"Yes Bhai Dadaji is right. Not today especially if it's Maanvi's day." Virat replied.
Viren inwardly groaned. "Areh what is this idiot doing? After all, everything I am doing is for him!" He thought to himself. "Okay change of plan, think!" Jeevika gave her husband a look, gesturing him about what to do. He closed his eyes, indicating that they need a new plan.
He sighed. "Fine Dadaji, if that's what you want. By the way, should we go and get Maanvi now?" Viren asked. "I mean look we need to get her ready which will take some time, right Jeevika?"
"Hm?" She asked as Viren gave her a look. "Yes Yes! That would definitely take some time." She gave them a smile. "If Maanvi comes then we both can get ready."
The Earl sighed, somewhat sure that the Prince and his wife were up to something but he decided to let this go, after all there was far more important matters to think about. "Okay fine. But come home soon okay?"
"Ji Dadaji." They replied together. Viren and Jeevika took Virat by the arms, who was himself confused about the situation.
Vanshika smiled, still happy about the slight change in her son. "It's true, Virat does seem different today."
"Hm." Swamini gave her a smile. "Do you remember what that match maker said?" Vanshika shook her head. "That if Virat marries Maanvi then she would bring luck to this family?" She smiled. "And now look, in just a few days Virat has started to change. The boy that would not even talk to any one of us is now today smiling. It's such a strange thing, isn't it?"
The Earl nodded. "Right, Swamini beta. Maanvi's steps are very fortunate, after all with everything that has happened, their relationship has bonded even more. Which is why I was thinking that…Maanvi will become the Duchess of Chandia. If after my death, there is someone to take over the Island, it should be Maanvi." He replied with a smile.
Vanshika nodded. "Bauji, that's a great idea. There would be no one better than Maanvi."
"Then it's agreed. At the conference we'll introduce Maanvi not only as our Bahu but as the Duchess of Chandia." Swamini stated.
The three elders smiled, waiting for the special moment in which Maanvi would be officially known around Chandrilasia. One thing was true, Maanvi was special. In a few days, her steps would become infamous, her destiny had already been written and she was deemed to succeed. She would become someone's saviour, and they….well, they would become hers.
