Jeevika had only read about what child labour was about and she knew all the details. Little did she know how traumatizing it looked. Since she and Zoya were both doing their rounds in the gynecology department for the next few weeks, she had to handle a lot of pregnant women like herself. One of Dr. Adams patients had just come to the hospital and she was in labour. Jeevika was supposed to handle this patient of hers, meaning she would be present during the whole process including the birth. The patient was only 3 centimeters dilated as of then, and she knew she'd be on call all night. This was the worst thing of gynecology as some women are in labour for so long, and the doctor has to monitor the patients every two hours or so.
jeevika - "Viren, I'm going to be stuck here all night with a patient. I doubt I'll make it home tonight. I had made some food this morning so you can eat that, okay"
viren - "Okay thank you. Don't over exert yourself okay. Do you want me to drop some food for you or coffee?"
jeevika - "No, it's okay. I just had some coffee right now. Okay i have to go now, love you"
viren - "Love you too"
Jeevika went to check on her patient and she was in a lot of pain with her contractions becoming more frequent. Jeevika realized that this would be her in a few months. The patient was getting really irritated, that she asked the doctor to give her the epidural. Many women opted for natural labour, but once into their labour they often asked for the drugs.
jeevika - "Dr. Adams, the patient decided to change her mind regarding the epidural"
Dr. Adams - "Okay, thats actually quite common as the pain can be unbearable"
Just as she said that, Jeevika started sweating more and more as if she was in labour right now. Dr. Adams and Jeevika both entered the patients room and Dr. Adams was preparing the epidural. She handed it over to Jeevika, giving her instructions on how to attach the tube to the back of the patient. Jeevika had chills in her body and she wasn't able to do it. She stood there frozen. Dr. Adams just tapped her shoulder and made eye contact with her encouraging her to do it. She attached the tube and tried being as careful as possible. She couldn't help to see the patients face and how painful it was to even get the epidural. It took almost twenty minutes for the drug to finish entreating the body. Then both the doctors walked outside.
Dr. Adams - "Jeevika make sure next time, you angle the epidural in a better position. It will help the patient and it will help with the pain"
jeevika - "Oh wait, did I make it worst for her?"
Dr. Adams - "No, you did it fine for the first try. Just for next time okay."
Jeevika nodded and then left for the locker room. She went to freshen up a little. It was hard getting the patients face out of her mind. It was almost midnight and she was getting hungry so she went to go get some food from the cafeteria. She got her food but was unable to eat, thats how petrifies she had gotten. Viren had just messaged her saying he was going to the library and that if she needed anything he could come. She didn't even respond to him, her head was just circling around how painful her labour would be.
She went back to check on the patient and she was almost 8 cm dilated. It would be another 3-4 hours perhaps till the actual birth. Jeevika went to the third-year med student room and layer down on the bed for sometime. She didn't even realize that she had begun crying until she saw her scrubs getting wet. She was going wash her face, when she got a page saying to come urgently to the labour room.
Dr. Adams - "Jeevika, she's almost ready to give birth"
The patient was in pain for another hour until the baby finally popped out. It was a little baby boy and Jeevika took him from the doctor's hand to clean him up. When she handed the baby back to the mother, she couldn't stop looking at how beautiful they looked together. She however did feel bad as the patient was all alone and had no family. As she was leaving from the hospital to go home, she thought how she would do it all alone without Viren. What if Viren was taking his bar exam, or he got stuck somewhere and Jeevika would be all alone. It was 5 in the morning now and Jeevika was sitting in her car crying unable to drive home. She somehow managed to get home and she went straight to her bedroom where Viren was sleeping. She was still really concerned and went and hugged Viren right away.
viren - "Jeevika whats wrong? Are you oaky?" he said hugging her back.
jeevika - "Just please stay with me always, please. Don't ever leave me alone. Please I'm going to need you in the hospital when our son is born"
viren - "I'm obviously going to be with you jeevs. Why would I not be with you."
Jeevika was falling asleep on Viren as he was comforting her. Viren saw that then picked her up and tucked her into bed and went back to sleep also. They both woke up after a few hours and Viren was wondering what happened to Jeevika all of a sudden.
jeevika - "So I was on call last night and I had to deliver a baby with the senior doctor. I got really panicked when I saw her in so much pain and plus she was all alone that's why I was freaked out in the morning. Seriously don't know what happens to me sometimes"
viren - "Its okay, you were probably just exhausted plus you're first time seeing it"
jeevika - "Viren you should have seen her face and how much pain she was in. But the moment she held her baby boy, it was like nothing had happened. When Dr. Adams passed him to me I just felt like holding my baby even more"
viren - "We both can't wait to hold him. It's okay just don't think about the pain, think about the gift we're going to be getting in return, right. And I'm going to be there with you no matter what so stop stressing about it, okay?"
Jeevika just nodded to Viren.
jeevika - "Viren, I have to go for my doctor's appointment today. Can you come with me?"
viren - "What time is it at?"
jeevika - "I made it at night, I can pick you up from work and then we can go together. I just don't want to go alone. Usually Zoya comes, but she's gone out with Karan and his family tonight.
viren - "Okay, thats fine. I'll leave 20 minutes early from work and I'll come pick you up from home okay?"
jeevika - "Thank You"
viren - "Okay, I'm going to go now. I'll see you in the evening" he said kissiner her forehead.
Before Viren left Jeevika stood up and hugged him and he held onto her too. Pretty soon Viren left and Jeevika went to the room downstairs with all the baby's stuff. She started organizing and putting together everything she could by herself, before she got super tired and went to lie down.
Viren came home in the evening and yelled out for Jeevika's name, but he didn't get any response. He went upstairs to check on her and saw her sleeping.
viren - "Jeevika, wake up. We have to leave right now"
jeevika - "okay"
viren - "How long have you been sleeping for?"
jeevika - "I don't know, I just ate and then set up some stuff downstairs and fell asleep"
Both of them got into the car and left for the doctors.
jeevika - "Actually Viren we have to go to the hospital"
viren - "But isn't it just a regular checkup?"
jeevika - "Well they said they had to do some tests, which can only be done at the hospital"
viren - "Okay" he said and driving back to the hospital.
Viren parked the car and both of them went inside holding hands. They went to the room next to the locker room waiting for Jeevika's doctor to come. Her doctor came and did the normal checkup and then told her that she needed to get a few blood tests done. One of the nurses came in took Jeevika's blood samples.
nurse - "The lab results will come in tomorrow afternoon. The doctor will call you if anything is wrong"
jeevika - "Okay thank you"
Viren and Jeevika soon left from the hospital.
