Chapter Six
"Come on Arjun, just one more." She looked at him with her beautiful, pleading eyes but his expression did not change.
He shook his head resolutely and tugged on her hand. "Absolutely not. I know perfectly well what "one more" means for you. We've been to almost every store here!"
"Exactly," she replied excitedly. "Almost every store but not every store, right? Come on, I still haven't found what I'm looking for!"
"And yet..." He gestured to the six boutique bags that were hanging from his arms like sad branches.
"Oh, woman up, ACP Raute," she said while rolling her eyes.
She began to walk towards the shop when she felt his warm fingers tug hers lightly. Turning around, she saw that he was looking at her tenderly.
"Hurry back, Roshni. The only thing that makes these shopping trips bearable is you."
She smiled at the sincerity in his voice and leaned in to lightly kiss his cheek. His stubble tickled her face and her smile widened.
"Main yuh gayi aur yuh aayi," she promised.
He released her hand and became suddenly aware of an unsettling feeling in his stomach. It grew, transcending his body and permeating into his world.
His surroundings began to distort and a psychedelic mess of colours assaulted him, alleviating only when he had become enclosed in a spiral of darkness. A cruel, gleeful laugh echoed in his ears, bouncing off every wall and every particle until it found him and his hollowing soul.
He clutched at his head wildly and then suddenly... he was falling...

"Sir? Sir!" Riya continued to shake him by the shoulders but his only response was to moan and flinch restlessly. Finally, she touched his face, allowing the backs of her cold fingers to press lightly against his cheeks.
The tightly wound muscles in his face began to relax and she gingerly ran her thumb over his forehead to soothe the creases that had formed there.
She released him and tried calling out his name again. "Arjun Sir?"
His eyes, tired and red-rimmed, blinked confusedly before zoning in on Riya. Her proximity perplexed him and he pushed himself away from her harshly. She understood his reaction but that didn't stop the hurt she suddenly felt.
Masking it, she walked to the door of the shack to pick up a small packet that lay on the floor. She threw it in his direction and watched as it hit him square in the face. He looked at her furiously and she shrugged.
"Potato crackers. It was all they had. You're welcome."
He was muttering a 'thank you' when the door opened and Rathod entered with Chotu and Shree in tow. Riya straightened herself up while Arjun opened the bag of crackers and began eating.
"How are my superstars?" Rathod asked sarcastically. He didn't wait for a reply but instead began to set up a makeshift board for the case details. Shree and Chotu pinned up photographs and notes while Riya and Arjun scrutinised the information they provided. Finally, they were done.
"Right team, let's get straight to the case." Rathod pointed to the photograph in the middle of the board. He kept himself aware of Arjun's presence as he said his next words but took care to not direct them at him. "The victim: Roshni Moradi, twenty-two years old." Everyone but Rathod sneaked nervous glances at Arjun, who made no response but to artfully twirl the pen in his hand.
Rathod continued, "She was an employee at Chandni Bar, the infamous dance bar and bordello of the town and its surrounding locales. Pretty girl, no family to speak of and apparently very popular amongst the clients. Her body was found on the ground in front of a building. It looks like a fall; she died on contact."
"Sir," Riya interjected. "This is similar to the Kanika case, right?"
Rathod nodded. "Similar, yes, but not the same. For instance, Kanika was pushed off the building during a party and there was a guard below when she landed on the car. Roshni, however, was found in a state which indicates a fall, save for the fact that she was remarkably unscathed."
He pointed to the injuries in the photograph which, although not minor, did not appear as serious as they should have been. "Besides, Roshni was alone in the building. It appears that the whole building was booked out for a grand party for the local minister and the Chandni Bar girls were hired as entertainment. Roshni was the star attraction and she had arrived early for preparations. The other girls and their matron discovered her body at around 6:50pm."
"Has the body been sent to the coroner for examination?" Shree asked.
"Yes, just this morning. Apparently, it's almost impossible to leave this town at night. Too dangerous, I was told. It may take a while to get it to the city and then obtain the results."
"This matron..." Riya mused. "What did she have to say about this?"
"Nothing, she wasn't there." Seeing Riya's confused expression, Rathod elaborated. "She hadn't been informed that we were coming. No one had, in fact. As you all know, this sort of case would normally go to the district police, not us. It seems that the local minister has ties with the Commissioner and requested that we investigate this case quickly and quietly." The distaste and disapproval was clear in Rathod's voice.
"So... no matron, no leads, no information and no post mortem reports." Arjun smirked in derision. "Quite an eventful morning you've had, Chief."
Rathod looked at Arjun with disgust and snapped, "Don't wet your pants with excitement just yet, Raute. Who said we don't have any leads?" He retrieved a final photograph from his bag and pinned it to the board.
Riya looked at the image and gasped. Surly and beautiful, the lady in the photograph stared out at her with a steely mocking that only the most secure and dangerous of women were capable of.
"Suspect number one: Noor Farswani."
