Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone! :)

I have some not so great news...the update will most likely be delayed, I'm afraid. I managed to contract an illness earlier this week, which puts a damper on the writing plans.

Apologies but I will try to update ASAP. Thanks.

Chapter Five

"This is all your fault, by the way," she said bitterly. Being off the case meant being confined to the four crumbling walls of the decrepit shack and Riya wasn't a fan of sitting around.

"Nobody asked you to play the hero and come after me, you know." Having nothing to do suited Arjun about as well as it did Riya and he had begun to rue the decision of ever leaving this goddamned shack. His alleged partner in crime-busting was not helping his mood either.

Her head shot up quickly. "Heroine."

"What?"

"He-ro-ine," she enunciated. "Not hero. It's not men alone who can do laudable things."

He rolled his eyes and lifted his left leg onto a haystack. "Whatever. You don't need to teach me about the capabilities of women." He eyed her before adding disparagingly, "Or shortcomings, for that matter..."

She faced him fully and was all set to give him a piece of her mind when she noticed a small stain on the calf of his trouser leg. Her eyes widened.

"Sir, you're bleeding..."

He shifted self-consciously and took his leg off the haystack.

"Excellent observational skills, Officer. So?"

"So?! So, given the mildly pleasant mood you've been exhibiting, I wouldn't say it's that time of the month just yet and certainly not when the stain is there." She pointed to his calf and shifted closer to him. "Therefore Sir, why are you bleeding?"

His nostrils flared in annoyance. "If you must know, Ms. Mukherjee, it happened when I fell into the animal trap last night. Apparently, it isn't enough around here to simply trap the animals; they must also torture them by lining the pit floor with sharp metal cones, the point of one of which went through my leg." He looked at her appalled face and added "And that, Riya, is why I couldn't get myself out so easily last night. Not because I was waiting for a heroine to flex her muscles and come save the day."

By now, her previous concern had given way to her anger and she pulled his trouser leg up roughly to reveal the wound. He looked up at her in astonishment and was about to push her hand away when she took out a roll of gauze and a tube of antiseptic cream from the pockets of her cargo pants.

"India's top cop and yet he still can't do his dressing properly."

* * *

"I heard a woman scream and ran outside to see what had happened. Dehlavi was hysterical. 'She's dead! She's dead! She's dead!' she kept saying and...th-that's when I saw...I saw..." the girl hiccupped through her tears and Shree handed her her third glass of water.

Sameer tried to control himself but his patience was wearing thin. "And then?" he snapped.

"And then I saw Roshni on the floor. There was blood everywhere and her neck..." Abha shuddered and gulped down some more water.

"Okay, thank you. You may leave." Sameer massaged his forehead and sighed wearily. The case was vague enough as it was and now... Arjun found it hard enough to contain himself during investigations as it was. Rathod was getting a headache just thinking about how he would react when he learns the victim's name.

"Chotu, bring the next girl in." Rathod consulted his file. "Noor, she's called."

A minute later, a figure appeared at the bejewelled doorway and stepped forward into the parlour. She was a tall woman, with dark, cascading curls that contradicted her name, wearing a black, mirrored skirt and a short choli with a bored expression. Her well defined eyebrows arched when she saw the officers and she stepped forward to take a seat opposite Rathod.

"Officer..." she drawled.

Rathod sat down and motioned for Chotu to close the door. "ACP Sameer Rathod, ETF Chief. I'm sure you know by now, Miss Noor, that we are investigating the death of your colleague, Roshni. Where were you at 5:54pm on the day of her death?"

Noor blinked her large, kohl-rimmed eyes and made a show of musing through her thoughts. "Where was I? Why, I was at someone's house, pretending to be - well, would you look at that? I was pretending to be an officer myself." She smirked. "A little light bondage, a lot of 'oh you naughty naughty boy'..."

"So you were with a client." Rathod cut in. "Is there anyone who can support your statement?"

Noor laughed while Shree and Chotu looked at each other uneasily. "Lighten up, ACP. I don't suppose my client, for one, has forgotten that session in a hurry. There should also be a receipt in the record books."

Sameer nodded. "What was your relationship with Roshni like?"

Noor snorted. "We got along just famously. I won't say that she got what she deserved but..." She let her sentence trail suggestively and added with a wink. "She was a bit of a lady-dog, if you know what I mean."

The officers exchanged glances while Noor stood up and stretched. "Now if you'll excuse me, boys, I have an urgent appointment with the Mayor and I can't keep him waiting. His wife is coming home in an hour." Without waiting for a reply, Noor opened the door and left.

Rathod nodded at Shree, who promptly began to track the woman's phone.
