Chapter 11:
Arnav smiled, content and completely at peace with himself. Well, not really. More like pretending to be at peace with himself. Everything had seemed normal this morning, the sun had risen on the east as usual, Aditya had made a fuss about going to school, Shyam Jijaji had yelled at Aditya for being cranky while Anjali Di hovered around the both of them with her pooja ke thali. Not to forget, Akash had fussed over Payal who was pretending to be Superwoman, trying to get everyone breakfast even though she knew she would probably puke because of the morning sickness. Yeah, everything at the house was normal.
Even Khushi didn't seem overly different, just her crazy old self, when he had gone to pick her up from her house. Buaji had offered him some chai, like always as well, screaming from her window, "Arnav Bitwa! Are you sure you don't want some garam garam chaiii? I promise. It's adhrak wali and veeery good for your health. It'll make your diabetes shiabetes go away!"
And as usual, Arnav had cringed, forcing himself to be polite as this was his sister-in-law's family, and Khushi had giggled away on the side.
Yup, everyone had been acting normally all morning. Nothing seemed to be off, but ever since he stepped into the office and sat down, he couldn't bring himself to concentrate. His mind kept reverting back to the previous day's events – after Khushi and her family had entered the Raizada mansion.
"Aisa kuch bhi nahin hain! Auntiji, aap aisa kabhi bhi mat sochiye. Please. Something going on between Arnav and me? Pigs would fly first" she scoffed, before making her over and hugging all the women and saying her namastes before seating herself next to her sister.
And Arnav was left standing in silence. Stunned to silence to be more precise. Was I just insulted or….?
Everyone else had burst out laughing, with Shyam asking Arnav if he had anything to respond back. Arnav had turned to glance at Khushi, who had merely sat there with a blank expression on her face, intently watching, waiting and watching to see what he would say.
And because he was so stunned…so shocked by her words, he said the first thing that came to mind, "Why would I even attempt to argue with what she said? I mean, it is the truth. Her and me would never work well together. We would drive each other crazy if we had to live together!"
"I mean, it's not like you both don't already spend about 90% of your days together. What absolutely major difference would this be anyway?" retorted an amused Shyam.
"That's at work which is obviously not the same" Khushi rolled her eyes. "And anyways, ignore him. Why did you all want us to come over Naniji?" Khushi asked Arnav's grandmother, swiftly changing the direction of the conversation and bringing everyone's attention back to finding her a potential groom.
And it was Arnav that was left pondering the question that Shyam had posed. He forced himself to focus his attention on the spiel that Shakuntala was giving the Gupta parivaar, telling them about that perfect boy for Khushi from Ameerika. The Gupta parivaar seemed to be really enthusiastic about this, about this suitor for Khushi, and her? Arnav watched her closely, her smile had dropped for a second, just for that initial second when Shakuntala had mentioned finding her a husband, but she had quickly fixed it back up again. But Arnav noticed that she didn't say a single word after that….hm. Interesting. He furrowed his eyebrows, crossing his hands over his chest, as he continued to keep a close eye on her.
When Khushi stepped into his office quietly the next afternoon, and had told him she would need a few days off the next week, he hadn't taken it to be anything serious. Of course, he had asked her why, but she had merely shaken her head, telling him that there were a few things she needed to do for her parents, and he hadn't put much thought into it.
Later that night, when at the dinner table though, Anjali had asked him if Khushi had taken the days off, and Arnav was confused. "She said she had something to do for her parents, so yeah she did. Why do you know about it Di?"
Shyam had responded for his wife, "Because Khushi is going to be meeting potential grooms! Didn't you pay attention yesterday? Nani and Shakuntala aunty called up the families of a few of the potential grooms and they've arranged meetings for next week"
"Any family would be lucky to have Khushi bitiya as their daughter in law" murmured an approving Nani.
Arnav had remained silent, not knowing how to respond as he heard the entire family jump into their own conversations about Khushi's wedding, Khushi becoming a bride.
He called her up later that night, and without any preamble, started his inquisition, "How could you not tell me that you're meeting potential husbands next week, and that's why you're taking a few days off? I thought I was your friend" he said angrily.
Khushi sighed, her voice wary, as she asked him why he cared so much. "Arnav, what difference does it make anyways? I would have let you know after the fact about what happened. No point in announcing this to the world"
"I'm not asking you to hand out flyers explaining this. I'm just hurt you didn't tell me Khushi"
Khushi was just not in the mood for arguments, but his words were just perfectly managing to get a rise out of her. She was tired, and already having a difficult time reasoning with herself that this was the best course by which to tread. How long was she going to wait for Arnav to realize his feelings? How long would she wait for him to even possibly fall in love with her? She wanted a family, she wanted to spend the rest of her life with someone who loved and cherished her. An opportunity was knocking at her door and she would simply be a fool to turn away, she convinced herself.
"Arnav. I'm sorry ok? There's nothing more I can do or say right now. If you want to attend these groom seeing meetings or whatever next week, feel free. Your family is coming anyways, so just ask Anjali Di and come with them. And if you want a damned special invitation for that, let me know, and I'll create one for you" she responded grimly.
"See you weren't even supposed to be mad! I didn't do anything wrong. You did. But you find a way to yell at me? Khushi, seriously, are you ok? Are you even happy about this? Why do I get the feeling you're not?" he asked her, his concern evident in his voice, as he couldn't help but express his worry to his friend. "Khushi, if you really don't want to get married and want to wait until you find your love, then I'll tell the family. You shouldn't be forced into doing something you don't want to do" he ended quietly.
And Khushi was touched. She really was. She was angry at Arnav on the one hand, but as a friend, she knew she couldn't ever find a better man. "That means a lot to me, a lot. And I want to assure you that I am going into this with my eyes wide open. Yes, I wanted to fall in love and then get married, but it doesn't look like I'll find anyone soon using my method. I'm sure you can fall in love after you get married too, so let's just hope this works out well" she tried to reassure him in a calm voice, a smile on her face that she hoped would carry through to Arnav.
"But you can meet guys! If you're in that much of a hurry, I can introduce you to some of my friends, and we can do a search for the perfect groom Khushi, you know, in reverse" he said seriously, and Khushi chuckled. "And after seeing what a fiasco it's become with you, you really think it would work for me Mr. Raizada? No sir. I'll stick to this method, and you can help me approve them" Khushi laughingly replied.
"Hey! This wasn't a complete fiasco. I mean, you're still looking for more women for me aren't you? You have a lot of friends and whatnot?"
Khushi shook her head sadly, this man would never realize that she loved him. What she was doing was the right way to go. "Of course Arnav. In fact, I have a few people lined up for you to meet soon"
"That sounds good my dear secretary. As long as they don't clash with when you're meeting potential grooms, it should all work out fine"
