CHAPTER 5
What the hell am I doing? This isn't me. I'm Yuvraaj Udayveer Singh. Future King of Jaigarh. I shouldn't be stalking commoners. I think I should head back to my Hotel.
Just as Uday was about to turn the steering wheel of his car around, his cell buzzed. He turned his Bluetooth device on and answered the call.
"Hello?" , spoke Uday.
"The house is not going to walk up to you itself you know" , answered the caller.
"Karan?" , asked Uday surprised.
"No, it's corpse number 13 from the mortuary of City Hospital. Ofcourse it's me dimwit" , mocked Karan
"Oh hi dimwit. How's it going?" , teased Uday.
"Ha-ha-ha I'm dying of laughter" , replied Karan sarcastically.
"Why did you call?"
"To tell you to stop being a sissy and get out of your car"
"Wait, how did you kn..." , he got cut in by Karan.
"Because I'm awesome. And because no one knows you better than me" , answered Karan proudly.
"I don't know man. All of a sudden it feels this wasn't such a good idea"
"Have you sworn to never listen to a word I say?"
"Now what did I do?"
"I told you this was a bad idea. I mean, you running after some random girl is so not a random thing. You're a freaking Prince and now you've turned into some creepy stalker"
"No I haven't. I just thought of returning her license to her. I was just being generous"
"Oh yeah. Feed it to someone who buys it. You're smitten by this chick"
"What? No I'm not. And don't call her a chick"
"See, now you're defending her too. Oh God why am I even living to see this day?"
"What do you want Karan. Just get to the point"
"My point is, that since you're already on the edge, might aswell jump off the bridge"
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, stop staring at her house, lift your ass up from the seat, step out of the car, and walk up to her door. The sooner you get this over with the better"
"Yeah I guess you're right. I'm already here, might aswell go inside now. Thanks man. It's surprising how you got so clever and started giving me useful advices" , chaffed Uday while removing his seat belt and stepping out of his car.
"I am so clever that sometimes I don't understand a single word of what I am saying" , sighed Karan.
"You and me both brother" , Uday immediately hung up the phone after that, rummaged through his pocket to find the license and after a couple of seconds of gathering himself up, he finally rung the bell. While waiting for her to answer the door, Uday's eyes began to scan the tiny rustic cottage standing proudly infront of him, surrounded by small bushes and plants that had turned slightly brown and faded by the summer of October's last sun. There was no lushness or sparkling emerald left in them, but it still provided the house a dainty look with a cozy feeling.
*****
This house had a certain warmth oozing out from it and gave a feeling of calmness to anyone who passed by. Something that I was never able to find even in a Palace as huge as mine where I was provided with various, unique and infinite luxuries. Maybe it's true, maybe money really can't buy you happiness. And maybe that is why my house never felt like a home. Especially after Mom left. Because a house is made of bricks, but a home is made of love, and love is exactly what we never had. The Palace that I spent almost my entire life in was a fortress of a ruthless King who's walls fought against any kind of emotions that dared to touch them. I envied Manyata for this. She had something I was longing to feel for ages. The feeling of being home.
Just as soon as Uday's thoughts began to wander off, the quicker they came to a standstill. He began to have second thoughts about his visit once again.
I think I should just keep the license in the mailbox and leave. Yeah that's perfect.
Uday turned around a bit to face the mailbox when he heard the lock of the door opening and he realized it was too late to back out now.
"Yes?" , Manyata's angelic voice greeted him and he turned around to finally face her. Donned in a light blue frilled shirt that ended just a few inches below her thighs, with a pair of white skin tight jeans and hair tied in a sleek ponytail, she looked extremely graceful and Uday couldn't resist admiring her beauty with his eyes. Even in a western attire, she managed to look elegantly simple. There was a moment of awkward silence as they both came face-to-face. Manyata stood at the door, bewildered, and Uday stood rooted on the spot trying to figure out the best way to start a conversation, forgetting the actual reason that he came there.
"Hi" , smiled Uday, as his hand unintentionally rose up for waving a greeting, but sensing how idiotic it would make him look, he immediately controlled himself.
What the hell am I doing? Someone shoot me already!
"What are you stalking me now or something?" , came a reply from a clearly pissed off Manyata. Realizing that the situation could go out of hands again if not worked upon instantly, Uday decided to just come to the point.
"I just came here to return this. Thought you might be worried" , said Uday showing her the license in his hand. He could sense her facial expressions changing and mellowing down a bit upon seeing it. Manyata outstretched her hand and Uday gave her the tiny card.
"Thank you" , Manyata smiled meekly.
"Don't mention it" , Uday returned the gesture. There was another moment of silence where Manyata kept on fidgeting with the card in her hands and Uday just stood there waiting for her to make the next move, or any move for that matter. But both of them avoided any sort of eye contact. Finally after what seemed like an eternity, Manyata's voice ended the quietness.
"Okay then, I guess we both should be heading back to our respective activities. Thanks once again" , Uday felt like someone just punched him in the face. He had expected her to invite him in for a coffee and a nice chat to properly thank him for his help, but never had he expected her to not give two hoots about him. He had never craved for a girl's attention. It was always the opposite in his case where girl's not only craved, but literally starved for his one look. And here stood a girl who couldn't care less about him.
Unbelievable. This has got to be the worst day of my life. Karan was right, I shouldn't have come here. She doesn't remember me and clearly doesn't want to get to know me either, so why am I pushing it? I can get a hundred girls on just snapping my fingers. How does one girl who doesn't want me make a difference? She's probably one of those small town arrogant girls who respect themselves a little too much. Or maybe she's playing hard to get? If that's the case then alright Miss Manyata Raichand. Let's officially introduce you to the man who invented these games!
"You know, it's rude to not invite someone inside your house when they're on your doorstep. Especially when that person happened to have helped you twice in less than twenty four hours" , smirked Uday. Manyata gave him a skeptical look and raised her eyebrow, but even she knew the basic tenets of hospitality where guests are treated with utmost generosity, be it invited or uninvited. She reluctantly opened the door wide enough for him and gestured him to enter. Uday nodded a thank you and stepped inside, smirking at his victory.
*****
I was welcomed by a sweet scent of freshly picked roses which were lying just a few feet away on the coffee table and blooming away with glory by the little sunshine falling on them through the window. The dazzling light blue paint on the walls of the mini living room perfectly complemented the ivory sofa set. Wooden, the floor stretched all across the room with no carpet to hide it and creaked with every step that I took. A small TV idly sat on a cabinet by the wall. I was keenly observing even the minutest of the details that adorned this tiny room and was somehow very impressed with it's simplicity. This might not be a perfect house, but it had almost everything that someone needed.
"Would you like to have tea or coffee?" , asked Manyata politely.
"Just a glass of water" , answered Uday.
"Okay. Make yourself comfortable" , gestured Manyata for him to have a seat. Uday smiled and watched her going towards the kitchen when he felt his cell phone vibrating in his pocket, intruding his moment. He glanced at the caller ID and let out an annoyed groan.
"Now what?" , asked Uday exasperated.
"What's up? Or should I rather ask who's up?" , questioned Karan blatantly and Uday could easily guess he had a stupid grin plastered on his face.
"Seriously Karan?" , sighed Uday in disbelief.
"It's a general question. Now I'm sure you didn't go there just to return her license. Her room is probably turned into a Bed & Breakfast by now. Or do you still prefer barns more? I wouldn't deny, barns surely add to the mood don't they?" , chuckled Karan.
"Just when I started to think you couldn't get any weirder, you surprised me" , replied Uday sarcastically ignoring his question.
"Awww are you blushing?" , teased Karan mimicking a girl's voice, irking Uday further.
"Look Karan, I didn't come here to sleep with her again okay?" , replied Uday firmly and in a hushed tone so that Manyata couldn't hear him.
"Look Uday. You only live once. So do everything twice" , stated Karan wisely.
"Shut up already" , Uday quickly hung up the phone and kept it back safely in his pocket as soon as he heard footsteps and within no time, Manyata came into view holding a glass of water. She handed him the glass to which Uday nodded in a thank you and took a sip, while Manyata went and sat at the couch opposite to where he was sitting, trying to avoid direct eye contact.
"So, how long have you been in Mumbai?" , Uday began conversing.
"Around 5 and a half years" , replied Manyata.
"You know, I came back to Mumbai yesterday after around 5 and a half years" , said Uday smiling.
"Where were you all this time?" , asked Manyata meekly.
"London" , replied Uday.
"W-why?" , hesitated Manyata.
"To visit my ailing Mother"
"Oh. How's she now?"
"She died 2 years ago" , replied Uday placidly. Manyata finally looked up towards him and their eyes met. He could feel her eyes piercing him, and something reached into his chest, squeezing down on his heart. He could feel her seeing right through him, right through those walls that he had built around him to hide his pain from everyone. And her eyes seemed to be breaking those barriers easily. Before she succeeded in bringing forth his vulnerable side, Uday quickly looked away. Manyata too realized their position and composed herself before she spoke up.
"I'm sorry" , her voice was barely a whisper.
"It's alright" , Uday passed a faint smile. A brief moment of silence followed which was intervened by the sound of a ringing telephone. Manyata instantly got up, excused herself and rushed towards the room at the opposite end. Bored by the progression of this meeting, Uday occupied himself in staring at the contents of the room he was sitting in. A few feet away, his eyes fell on a photo frame standing right beside the TV set on the cabinet. Curiosity got the better of him and his feet began making their way towards it. He gently picked the frame up and began scanning what looked like a family picture. He easily spotted Manyata, and there were 3 more people standing beside her. He guessed the middle-aged man and woman she had linked both her arms with to be her parents, and the young girl hugging her from the back to be her sister. All 4 of them had the brightest of smiles on their faces. One could easily tell that they were a happy family. Uday unknowingly began smiling looking at the picture, thinking how lucky she was and how happy she looked with her family. But his heart sank when his thoughts once again went back to his past, reminding him of his broken family. His hand rose and his fingers began to gently caress Manyata's face in the picture. He couldn't help but wonder how different the girl in this picture looked from the one he was with right now. The girl in the picture reminded him more of how she looked when he first met her 5 years ago. And that smile seemed to have lost somewhere from that beautiful face. He flashbacked to the time when they were stuck in that barn and Manyata was high on drugs and acting insane. He couldn't suppress a chuckle reminiscing that moment.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" , yelled Manyata furiously and yanked the frame from Uday's hand. Uday was left baffled by the sudden demeanor of Manyata. He was about to ask her when or how he offended her in any way, but without giving him the chance to do that, Manyata spoke up again.
"How dare you touch my things without my permission? Is this the way guests behave? And that too unwanted? First you randomly show up at my doorstep, then invite yourself inside my house and now you're messing with my things. Listen, I already thanked you for your help. Now please leave me alone. I've had eno..." , Uday's anger had crossed it's limit by then and before she could complete, he cut her midway and silenced her.
"Ssshhh" , Uday moved closer to where Manyata was standing and gestured her to be quite by placing his index finger on his lips as a signal. Manyata instantly fell silent and stood there frozen as his eyes rooted her to the spot.
"Enough Manyata. You have no right to talk to me like that. And what are you getting so worked up and pissed for? I had a photo frame in my hand, not a dagger. So stop your pointless screaming" , said an irate Uday who had lost his cool by then. Manyata was startled by the sudden outburst and just continued staring at him. Uday instantly regretted shouting at her and closed his eyes sighing deeply to calm himself down. A few seconds passed when he heard Manyata's voice.
"Leave. Please" , pleaded Manyata weakly. He opened his eyes and found her staring blankly at the floor, avoiding to meet his eye. Uday didn't know what to do next. He had thought he'd be able to woo her with his charms, but still he didn't make any such attempt. He felt it would be wrong. And now after this little tiff that they just had, he thought it was best he left before things got worse and further soured their already complicated situation. But something was holding him back. He knew he had to go, but he didn't want to. The look in her eyes was piercing his heart. He knew this wasn't just about him touching her things without her permission, her reaction spoke otherwise and he knew it was definitely related to her family. Having experienced something similar, it wasn't hard for him to guess that. In no time, his feet began dragging him closer towards Manyata like some magnetic force pulling him in. Sensing the distance between them gradually decreasing, Manyata looked up to face him, finding a newfound intensity in his gaze. Without letting him close the remaining few inches of distance between them, Manyata turned around to leave, only to be promptly stopped by Uday as he held her wrist in his hand preventing her from moving further. He walked a few steps towards her, still holding her wrist and her back still facing him. Uday then placed his hands on both her shoulders and slowly made her turn around. Not once did Manyata look up to face him directly, until Uday's hand rose up and he gently lifted her chin, but she still avoided looking at him in the eyes.
"Do you miss your family?" , asked Uday politely to which Manyata slightly nodded in affirmation.
"I miss mine too" , continued Uday ruefully. Almost forthwith, Manyata looked towards him. She could sense a similar pain in his eyes. Uday had a sudden urge of embracing her in his arms. The way she was looking at him was sending a wave of a whole different level of emotions within him. He took another step forward and this time, Manyata didn't back away. He took that as a signal and cupped her face. He lightly caressed her cheek with the back of his hand making her shut her eyes tight, feeling the smooth sensation. By now their bodies were pressed together, with his fingers running through her hair, traveling down her arms, and finally resting on her waist, pulling her closer to him. Manyata's hands rose of their own accord, placing them softly on his chest.
She looked at me with her gleaming eyes as if she could read my every want as she moved closer to me. During that moment, all I wanted was her arms to be around me. It was happening and I didn't know how to respond to that. I awkwardly placed my arms around her knowing that if I didn't, she might stop hugging me. She sank her face into my chest as if to ask me to never let go as I finally put my arms around her, locking her in a warm embrace. I couldn't help but hope that maybe someday, this could be something more, maybe we could be something more.
*****
Both came out of their trance just as soon as they got into it. Realizing the awkwardness of the situation that they had gotten themselves into, they slowly withdrew their hands back from each others bodies, but all this while, didn't once dare to look towards each other. Uday didn't know how or why that happened between them, but he felt elated to see the equal involvement from Manyata's side. They stood like that for what seemed like eternity until finally Uday decided to break the awkward silence.
"Where's the bathroom?" , What the hell am I saying? Bathroom? I don't even want to go to the bathroom. Holy marbles I should just die right now!
"It's that way" , replied Manyata coyly, pointing in the direction. Uday had no choice but to go to the bathroom anyway now, even when he didn't actually have to use it. Once inside, he locked the door and took in a deep breath in order to calm his nerves. His mind and body always reacted in a completely different way whenever he was around Manyata. Uday moved towards the sink and turned on the tap, splashing some cold water on his face for a couple of times. Stretching his hand to the left, he grabbed the towel and gently tapped it on his face to wipe off the water droplets. Looking at himself in the mirror, Uday quickly straightened his shirt and ran his fingers through his hair to make them neat before heading out. Just as he was about to open the door, his cell phone buzzed again. Already agitated by the events of the day, Uday pushed his hand inside the pocket of his jeans, yanked his cell phone out and without looking at the caller ID, he answered it, guessing it to be Karan pestering him again.
"I really don't have time for your crap right now so give it a rest already" , snapped Uday.
"But Sir, you asked me to call you and remind you about your meetings for the day" , replied the caller intimidated.
"Who's this?" , asked Uday perplexed.
"Sir it's me, Vivek. Your PA" , came a weak reply from Vivek.
"Oh Vivek, it's you. I thought it was...Never mind. Tell me what did you call me for?"
"Sir you have a lunch meeting with Mr.Chopra today at 3:00 pm, which is almost an hour from now"
"That meeting was today? Damn how could I forget?"
"Sir if you want I can get it cancelled for the day"
"No it's alright. Listen Vivek, I'll be at the Hotel in a couple of minutes. In the mean time, you get that project file from my suite"
"Okay Sir. The arrangements for the lunch have already been made"
"Good. I'll be there soon"
"One more thing Sir"
"What?"
"Your Fath...I'm sorry, I mean Maharaj Giriraj called" , said Vivek hesitantly. Uday flinched at the mere mention of the name.
"Why?"
"I tried asking many times but he wouldn't tell me. He said, he..."
"What?"
"Nothing Sir. It's nothing"
"What did he say to you Vivek? Answer me. And that's an order"
"He said he didn't owe indigent and penniless people like me any answers" , replied Vivek timorously, his voice slightly breaking.
"And why am I hearing about this now?" , questioned Uday sternly. He hated the way his Father treated his employees. Like they were worthless souls.
"Sir you just came back yesterday and I thought it wasn't important enough to disturb you for" , fear was clearly evident in Vivek's voice.
"Next time something like that happens, you tell me right away. Just continue dodging any such calls in the future. And feel free to not tell me about them" , came a frank reply from Uday. Sensing that his boss wasn't mad at him for this, Vivek thanked his stars and reminded him about the meeting one more time before hanging up. Holding his cell phone in his hand, Uday walked out of the bathroom and found Manyata still standing at the same place, waiting for him.
"I should leave now" , said Uday half-heartedly.
"Yeah okay" , replied Manyata feebly and started walking him to the door.
"Thank you for your help" , said Manyata on reaching the door. Uday passed her a smile before opening the door and as soon as he did, he saw a child smiling broadly and running towards where he was standing and within no time arrived to the doorstep, pulling Manyata into a hug and leaving him confused.
"Mommy!" , Uday felt a lump in his throat as soon as that word reached his ears.
