Just a little something I wrote to cheer myself up after the disaster that was today. Hope it cheers you all up as well. This is set in the future, and Sana is Riya.
"Riya Mukherjee!!"
She froze as she heard the familiar voice right behind her. Oh damn, was all she could think before she was turned around none-too-gently and subjected to the frown of one not-too-pleased policeman.
"Now look what you've done!!"
She opened her mouth to answer but shut it, catching the warning glint in his eyes.
"How many times have I told to stay in the office? Irresponsibility ki bhi hadd hoti hai, Riya. You know you weren't allowed to join us for a reason."
Riya rolled her eyes before she could think better of it. The minute she realized what she had done, she braced herself for his reaction. And she was right. His teeth clenched visibly and he glared at her furiously. But, wonder of wonders, instead of yelling himself hoarse at her, he simply turned away and stalked to the other end of the beach they were currently marooned on.
Well, maybe marooned was a strong word. They were simply cut-off from mainland because the high-tide had covered the only link to it. They probably had to wait a few hours before the next low-tide, and then they would be able to leave! One would think they were in the way of being the next Robinson Crusoe looking at the man's reaction. Riya shook her head, as usual caught between exasperation and amusement.
She settled herself down on the sand, resigned to a long wait both for the low tide and her angry superior officer, when she felt a shadow loom over her. Her heart stopped beating for a minute, only to resume beating at a much faster rate when he settled down next to her. He handed her a canteen and a packet of biscuits with a curt "Eat" and proceeded to make himself comfortable, stretching out his legs in front of him, almost touching her own. Riya cursed herself as her face turned scarlet; why did she have to react to him so much? She looked at him from the corner of her eyes, blushing even harder when she noticed the tiny smirk on his face. Well, at least he wasn't angry anymore... His lips quirked further as he observed her embarrassment. "Riya, tum kyun..." he began, evidently looking to tease her, but stopped short when she looked into his eyes and smiled. 'Gotcha sir', she smiled to herself, wondering if it would be wise to finally say what she had been trying to say for ages now, when his phone rang, ruining the moment with its shrill beep.
"Haan Rathore. Woh mere saath hai. Haan... Gaadi ke trunk main baith kar aa gayi. I know, that was very irresponsible of her. She's fine. Abhi main usey daant laga raha tha. Haan keh doonga. We'll only be able to leave early in the morning. Tum log tab tak sare boats ke licenses check kar lena. Aur haan, Shree se kehna ki woh ab GPS tracker ko follow na kare. Haan... Yahaan pe toh kuch nahin hai. It was a false trail. I think they found out we were tracking them..."
Riya tuned him out as he continued to give instructions to their chief. She giggled as she imagined Rathore sir's expression. While the two men weren't as hostile to each other as they were initially, they still managed to get on each other's nerves, a fact that never failed to amuse the much-hassled trio of Chotu, Shree and herself. She was still chuckling as she recollected the last altercation between the two, when she realized all was quiet. She shook her head and composed herself hastily, trying to avoid annoying him further.
"Abhi got scared when he woke up and found you missing", he told her after a moment of silence.
Guilt flooded Riya as she imagined how worried poor Abhi must've been. She hadn't liked leaving him alone, but what was she to do? She couldn't neglect her duty, whatever anyone said. Besides, Abhi would be safe in the resort and he'd be easily appeased with a kiss or two. She shrugged slightly. "He should get used to it. This is my job after all. I can't always stay with him," she said softly, laying her hand on his. He returned the pressure and exhaled loudly before continuing to speak. "You know I don't like you coming to the field Riya. Why can't you take your desk job again? How can I show my face to Abhi if something happens to you? You haven't been strong ever since you pulled that stunt so many years back..." Riya stopped him, the memory of that horrid incident flooding her mind. When she'd swallowed that capsule, she had been sure she would die. She knew it was a miracle that she had survived at all. She had spent almost 6 months in the hospital, convalescing slowly but surely under the watchful eyes of the man sitting with her now. But it had been almost six years to that incident now, and it was about time he learnt to let go of it.
"I'm absolutely fine now. I'm not weak, and you should know that, considering you spent so much time helping me get back on my feet. I passed all my physicals before getting back on field and I've done that twice! You need to stop underestimating my strength..." she said, voice rising towards the end.
She was cut short by his sigh. Unexpected. "I don't underestimate you Riya. I'm just scared. I've had to face the possibility of losing you, not once but two times now. I'm not strong enough to face it a third time." The words, whispered so softly she could barely hear them, took all the fight out of her. So the great Arjun Rawte finally admitted he had a vulnerable side! She felt oddly triumphant as she lifted her head from his shoulder and kissed him gently. "Don't you worry", she whispered, trailing soft kisses down his jaw. "Nothing is going to take me away from you..."
She awoke the next morning in his arms, feeling completely safe and cherished. He had probably been up for a while, but had stayed immobile for fear of disturbing her. Shaking her head at his typical behaviour, Riya got up and stretched. She muffled a grin as she watched him shake his arm vigourously, as he walked to the car, making sure everything was okay for them to leave. And Riya couldn't wait to leave. While it was great that they'd talked and had some time to themselves, she still had to return to Abhi. He'd probably demand that she stay with him 24*7 for the next month or so... Riya sighed. Why did the men in her life have to be so darn over-protective?
"Time to go, Riya", Arjun's voice jolted her out of her reverie. She hurried to the car, but suddenly stopped. The next instant she was on her knees puking her guts out, while a frantic Arjun tried to calm himself down enough to hold her hair back. She noticed him fuming as she sat back, gulping great mouthfuls of water from the canteen and prepared herself yet again for his anger. He did not disappoint. The minute he was certain there was nothing terribly wrong with her, he began to rant at her. "Now this is why I tell you to go back to the desk!! Par nahin, meri baat na sunne ki kasam kha rakhi hai tumne. You've been tormenting me for the past six years with your stubbornness, Riya, but I'm telling you now, THIS HAS TO STOP. As soon as we get to the mainland, you are tendering your resignation from the ETF effective today and going back to the desk. No arguments. I won't have you working when you are so ill..."
Riya had had enough. At the last line, she jumped him and grabbed hold of his collar, pulling him close. "ACP Rawte, you should shut up now before I forget I love you.", she yelled, jabbing her finger into chest for emphasis. She smirked slightly at his shocked expression. "I'm telling you this for the last time - I will not quit my job. I will not return to the desk. I. AM. FINE. Now let's go. I want to get back to Abhi."
She turned away, ready to make a dramatic exit, but fate apparently was not on her side, as she stumbled over some driftwood and found herself held securely in his arms. It was now his turn to smirk. "So much for fine. You can't even take a step with puking or stumbling," Arjun knew he had gone too far, however, when Riya shoved him away.
"I am not unwell, you MORON!!", she raged at him, as he cowered slightly. "I am fine. I didn't see the driftwood lying there. Why? Because I was busy countering your idiotic arguments. SHUT UP!", she screeched as he tried to say something. "I am not done yet. I stumbled because of YOU. And the puking? That's because of you as well!! I am PREGNANT!"
Riya froze. She'd said it! She had been trying to tell him for the past month, but had hesitated due to his maniacal protective streak. And now the cat was out of the bag, in the worst manner possible. She relaxed as she saw the look of sheer delight on his face. "Riya..." was all he could say before he folded her into his arms and kissed her soundly.
"It's unbelievable how you think I can be handled so roughly when I'm so weak", Riya teased, a few minutes later. "I'm going to have bruises on my arms", she complained, rubbing her arms and mock-glaring at Arjun, who had the decency to look ashamed.
"Riya Mukherjee..." he admonished her, but she put a finger against his lips.
"It's Riya Rawte, actually," she smirked, kissing the tip of his nose. "NOW can we go home, husband dearest? Unless you want to tell Abhi why his mother didn't get back in time for his birthday party..." she giggled, as Arjun leapt into the car, terrified at the thought that they wouldn't make it to the resort on time.

Liked it? I hope you did! In case it isn't clear, Abhi is their son. He's three and they were in a resort to celebrate his third birthday when a case cropped up.
