Writer's note: So people! Thank you all for liking the prev update and the VM so much.. a big hug out to all of you. All ready for the kitchen scene? I hope this brings in the kinda effect I want. It's well... swoony ... *dreamy eyes*
Khushi was bustling in the kitchen, gathering milk and other ingredients to make tea, but her mind was still thinking about whatever had just ensued in the living room. How quickly had everything occured! Khushi feels touched that the entire Raizada family had come to apologize. The pain that her mother had been living with for the past so many years must have lessened a little, now that no one held her responsible. Khushi's wish of having her Amma be absolved of all accusations was finally fulfilled.
She watches the water start to bubble in the saucepan as she remembers what Arnav had said a few minutes ago. Dadi ne hum sabse ye kaha ki aapne uss insaan ko fasaya tha, kyunki aap unki daulat ke peeche padi thi. Khushi feels saddened that everything had been concocted by Dadi whom she respected despite Dadi's obvious dislike for her. But to lie about something like this was beyond Khushi's understanding. Unhone sirf apne bete ke bachav ke liye ye sab kiya, she thinks to herself, but she remembers Arnav's anger when he mentioned it. She adds sugar and tea leaves to the bubbling water.
Then her thoughts go to her dearest Jeeji; she too had suffered due to the entire misunderstanding about Amma's past. Khushi remembers the time when she had seen her sister mutely accept the decision of not going back to Shantivan. She knew that even though Jeeji never revealed her pain and was always a pillar of strength for Amma and herself, it was equally painful for her to distance herself from her family. Khushi feels happy that now even her Jeeji was returning to Shantivan; the place where she rightfully belonged. Khushi adds milk to the saucepan, smiling that the two people whom she cared about so much were finally getting the happiness they deserved.
The door creaks behind her and thinking it is Payal who has come to help her in the kitchen, Khushi immediately turns around, "Jeeji! Hum tumhare liye bahut khush hain!" she exclaims happily, and wraps her arms tightly around the figure hardly even looking to see who it was.
*Kyun Dard hai itna Rabba Ve*
Arnav stands still, feeling his breath knocked out of his lungs as Khushi hugs him. He is extremely surprised being at the receiving end of this gesture. He can't remember the last time when he had been embraced by her like this. Her head is pressing into the hollow of his neck. Her hair smells of flowers; a faint smell yet intoxicating for him. As he feels her arms around him, an odd sense of contentment envelopes him. This is what I've been missing all this time, he realises a sense of yearning starts building up inside him. He knows that Khushi had called him Jeeji, which obviously meant that's who she thought he was. But he doesn't correct her hoping to stretch whatever little time she was holding him for.
Khushi can hear heartbeats thudding loudly through the fabric. But it's not just the heartbeats that make her suspect something isn't right. Her fingers can feel a sleek material on the back, definitely not resembling anything that her Jeeji wore. Also, as she breathed in, she felt a wonderful smell filling in her senses; a curious musky smell which she could recognize from some place before. She opens her eyes and her gaze falls on the white sleeve which further confirms something isn't right. Slowly she straightens, her gaze going upwards. Khushi's eyes slowly widen as she realises it was most certainly not her Jeeji she is hugging.
She immediately withdraws her arms and tries to step away from him, but just then Arnav instinctively envelopes his arms around her, and pulls her towards him locking her in an embrace. Khushi's stare of disbelief becomes even more pronounced as she crashes into his chest. Unknowingly, she had gripped him reflexively by his arms. Arnav looks down at Khushi not sure how he was hugging her but he doesn't want to let go of her. Her breathing hikes up watching him look at her with sad eyes. Aapki aankhein itni udaas kyun hain? She wonders. Tum mere saath nahin ho Khushi, he thinks. They don't realise that their thoughts are actually conversing with each other. They stand like that, locked in the embrace, him holding her tenderly lest she'd disappear like a wisp of smoke.
*Rabba Ve Ends*
Suddenly a loud hissing sound reaches their ears snapping them out of their trance. They look towards the stove in alarm and see the milk rising up to overflow from the saucepan. She struggles a bit in his arms and Arnav immediately releases the lock of his arms around her. Khushi rushes to the gas and turns the flame down. She stands still by the gas stove, breathing heavily as she tries to calm her racing heartbeats. Arnav too stands still at his spot and watches Khushi's back from a distance. Silence descends between them.
"Amma aur Jeeji se maafi maangne ke liye shukriya," Arnav's eyes widen as he finally hears Khushi break the silence first. She turns around to face him, with expressionless eyes. He nods at her in reply. "Waise maan na padega, aapne Jeeji ko kitni jaldi mana liya." Khushi says trying to sound sarcastic but failing at it. She was trying so hard not to show her happiness to him. Arnav feels his lips curving up. He walks towards Khushi just to see her eyes widen in alarm. He immediately stops.
"Mujhe logon ko convince karna achi tarah aata hai," he replies, trying not to sound haughty but failing at it. Khushi's eyes narrow at him.
"Tabhi to aap hum se shaadi kar rahe hain," Khushi replies back in a level tone. Arnav's smirk gets replaced by a look of utter shock as he stares unsurely at Khushi wondering if he heard her right.
"Shaadi?" he asks her startled. Khushi folds her arms and nods in reply.
"Haan, agle mahine hi to humari shaadi hai. Ya ab aapko humse shaadi karne ka mann nahin hai?" She asks him looking hurt.
Arnav looks completely lost. Khushi seriously mujhse shaadi karna chahti hai? Is this a... am I dreaming? He wonders to himself. Par maine abhi tak maafi bhi nahin maangi hai. Shaadi ki baat kahan se aa gayi? Arnav wonders wildly. Then he mentally smacks himself. Isn't this what you have been wanting since the day your wedding broke? Agar Khushi khud hi tumhare paas wapis aane ki baat kar rahi hai, why are you resisting?
"Nahin! Mera matlab hai, aisi koi baat nahin hai," Arnav replies hastily. Khushi smiles warmly at him and starts walking towards him. Arnav feels his heartbeats racing again. She walks really close, too close. They were almost nose to nose.
"Kyunki, doctor se to aapne yahi kaha tha na ki aap humare mangetar hain?" Khushi whispers sweetly to him. Arnav is so lost in watching her lips move that he doesn't register her question at once. Only when his eyes move to meet her angry ones, does he realise what Khushi had just said to him. He takes a step back from her in alarm.
"Woh... woh actually..." Arnav stutters trying to find a way out of the quicksand he knew he had landed himself into.
"Haan, dar asal baat ye hai, ki aapko logon ko behekana kaafi ache tarah se aata hai," Khushi says in a sugary sweet voice, which was just a facade for her irritation. "Tabhi to pehle doctor ko behlaya," she takes a step towards Arnav who steps back, "fir Amma ko," another step forward another step backwards, "aur fir humari pyaari Jeeji ko. Hai na Arnavji?" By the third step, Arnav had been cornered with his back against the wall and Khushi was now glaring at him. He quickly realises this was the fourth time she had cornered him this way. But her words had instantly hit him in the guts.
"Maine Amma aur Payal ko behlaya nahin hai!" Arnav's voice rises in his retort. He watches as the anger slowly dissipates from her eyes. She takes a step back and looks at him as if she was seeing for the first time. Arnav feels utterly confused at this rapid pace of Khushi's moodswings. She was alternating between emotional and angry.
"Kya kaha aapne?" she whispers softly, completely contradicting her anger of mere moments ago.
"Maine kaha," Arnav too speaks calmly, "ki maine Amma aur Payal ko behlaya nahin hai. Maine unse jo bhi kaha bilkul sach tha. Galti meri thi aur isiliye maine maafi maangi!" Khushi stares at him, her eyes softening. "Aur agar main uss doctor se tumhare fiance hone ka jhooth nahin kehta, to mujhe woh tumhare Bauji ke operation ke bare mein kuch nahin batata." Arnav finishes explaining to her.
"Aapne Amma ko Amma kaha." Khushi whispers in an awestruck voice. Arnav stares at her in confusion. Out of everything I said to her is that all she registered? But as he continues watching her, he realises that he had said it without thinking, it had come instantly to his mouth. But that was something Khushi had been pestering him to do when were married. Khushi was such a bundle of contradictions. When she was angry about something, she could instantly switch over to something else in a moment. He sighs in exasperation.
"I'm sorry ki maine doctor se jhooth kaha Khushi. Mera intention tumhe hurt ya gussa karne ka nahin tha. Mujhe Bauji ke bare mein poochna tha aur..." he pauses to look at her square into her eyes, "aur tum mujhe kuch batane nahin wali thi kyunki tumhare hisaab se main tumhari family ka hissa nahin hun." Khushi winces as she hears his words. She realises that she had indeed said those words to him. She bows her head looking away from him.
"Par ab to aisa nahin lagta hai," she replies. Arnav looks at her, immediately feeling hopeful. Khushi looks back up into his eyes. "Ab to Jeeji wapis apne sasural ja rahi hai. To aap unke Jethji hue. To aap bhi iss parivar ka hissa hi hue." She replies concedingly. Arnav realises he was only going to be granted his stand as part of her extended family for now. He nods his head slowly, happy to be her sister's Jeth for the time being. Khushi walks back to the gas stove and starts tinkering with things again while Arnav stands watching her work.
After a long silent moment, he whispers, "Main pareshan tha tumhare liye," Khushi's body freezes as she hears his words. "kyunki mujhe laga ki tumhe kuch... mujhe laga ki maine tumhe kho diya," his voice breaks. Khushi bows her head but still not turning around. "Jis raat mujhe Dadi se sach pata chala, mujhe ye realise hua ki tum woh sach mujhse bahut pehle hi jaan chuki thi. Mujhe tumse kisi bhi haal mein baat karni thi." Arnav says desperately. "Tumse har us time ke liye maafi maangni thi jab maine tumse apni mother se relation todne ki baat ki thi." Khushi feels a shiver run through her body as she is reminded of the time but she remains silent.
"Us raat se lekar aaj tak maine jo kuch bhi kiya, galat kiya. Na sirf tumhare sath par tumhare family ke saath bhi, Khushi," Arnav resumes his voice getting heavier with emotion. "Unhone bhale hi mujhe maaf kar dia ho, par main khud ko maaf nahin kar paunga." Khushi suddenly feels breathless as she realises that he was answering the question she had asked him in the hospital. She clenches her palm.
"Tumne mujhse poocha tha na ki maine pehle tumhare bare mein kyun nahin socha tha?" Arnav pauses, again feeling a lump in his throat. He wishes Khushi would turn around just once and face him. But as she continues standing still, he sighs in defeat, "Jis raat tumse shaadi tod thi, tab maine tumhare bare mein socha tha." Khushi's breathing hikes up as she hears his tearful confession. Arnav slowly starts walking towards her. "Jis raat tumne ring wapis kar di, tab bhi tumhare bare mein socha tha. Jis raat tumne mujhse kaha ki tum mujhse nafrat karti ho, tab bhi maine tumhare bare mein socha tha." Arnav stops right next to her, his mouth hovering near her left ear. "Maine tumhare bare mein har pal socha hai Khushi aur aage bhi sochta rahunga." he whispers in agony and rests his forehead gently on the side of her head.
Goosebumps erupt all over her body as his breath tickles her ear. He just stands like that, not touching her, not holding her. Just allowing their breaths to be in tandem. Khushi's heart was beating wildly, but there was a lump in her throat that she just couldn't swallow. She wonders how come from her cornering him a few minutes ago, did they reach this point where he was resting his head on hers and making her feel this way.
"KHUSEE!! Chai bani kaaa?" Garima's voice reaches their ears and Khushi jumps away from him in surprise. Arnav straightens up. He holds Khushi in an intense stare for a moment and then without saying another word, just walks away. Khushi holds on the concrete counter for support as she finds her legs wobbly. She watches Arnav's retreating back. Hey Devi Maiyya! Khushi finds herself wondering. Ye kya ho raha hai humare saath?

Arnav feels his lips curving up. He walks towards Khushi just to see her eyes widen in alarm. He immediately stops.
"I'm good at convincing people," he replies, trying not to sound haughty but failing at it. Khushi's eyes narrow at him.
"That is why you are marrying me," Khushi replies back in a level tone. Arnav's smirk gets replaced by a look of utter shock as he stares unsurely at Khushi wondering if he heard her right.
"Marrying you?" he asks her startled. Khushi folds her arms and nods in reply.
"Yeah. Our marriage is next month. Or have you had a change of heart now?" She asks him looking hurt.
Arnav looks completely lost. Khushi seriously wants to marry me? Is this a... am I dreaming? He wonders to himself. But I haven't even apologized to her yet. Where has the talk about marriage come from? Arnav wonders wildly. Then he mentally smacks himself. Isn't this what you have been wanting since the day your wedding broke? "that's why you hoodwinked the doctor first," she takes a step towards Arnav who steps back, "then Amma," another step forward another step backwards, "and then finally my sweet Jeeji. "I said," Arnav too speaks calmly, "that I have not hoodwinked Amma and Payal. I meant every word I said to them. It was my fault and so I apologized!" Khushi stares at him, her eyes softening. "And had I not lied to the doctor that time, he wouldn't have told me anything about your Bauji's operation." Arnav finishes explaining to her.
"You addressed Amma as Amma." Khushi whispers in an awestruck voice. Arnav stares at her in confusion. Out of everything I said to her is that all she registered? Khushi winces as she hears his words. She realises that she had indeed said those words to him. She bows her head looking away from him.
"But it doesn't seem so that way now does it?" she replies. Arnav looks at her, immediately feeling hopeful. Khushi looks back up into his eyes. "Jeeji is now returning to Shantivan, so you are her brother-in-law. So that does make you part of the family." She replies concedingly. After a long silent moment, he whispers, "I was worried for you," Khushi's body freezes as she hears his words. "because I thought something happened to... I thought I lost you," his voice breaks. Khushi bows her head but still not turning around. "The night Dadi told us the truth, I realised that you already knew the truth since a very long time. I had to talk to you in any way." Arnav says desperately. "I needed to apologize to you for every time that I asked you to break all relations with your mother." Khushi feels a shiver run through her body as she is reminded of the time but she remains silent.
"Whatever I did to you since that night was wrong. Not just to you but also to your family, Khushi," Arnav resumes his voice getting heavier with emotion. "I know they have forgiven me, but I can't forgive myself." Khushi suddenly feels breathless as she realises that he was answering the question she had asked him in the hospital. She clenches her palm.
"You asked me that how come I didn't think about you before?" Arnav pauses, again feeling a lump in his throat. He wishes Khushi would turn around just once and face him. But as she continues standing still, he sighs in defeat, "The night I broke off the wedding, I did think about you." Khushi's breathing hikes up as she hears his tearful confession. Arnav slowly starts walking towards her. "The night you returned me the ring, I thought about you. The night you told me that you hate me, I thought about you." Arnav stops right next to her, his mouth hovering near her left ear. "I've thought about you every single moment Khushi, and I'll continue thinking of you." he whispers in agony and rests his forehead gently on the side of her head.
Goosebumps erupt all over her body as his breath tickles her ear. He just stands like that, not touching her, not holding her. Just allowing their breaths to be in tandem.
