Rendezvous
The Khurana corporate jet stood ready for their departure. Maan took Geet's hand as she stepped out of the car. The pilot was already on board. The copilot and cabin attendant were waiting on the tarmac, both of them smiling.
'Congratulations, Mr Khurana, Mrs Khurana,' the attendant said.
'Best of luck to you both,' the copilot chimed in.
'Thank you,' Maan replied as Geet gave a brief bewildered smile.
Geet proceeded up the steps of the plane with Maan following behind. As she stepped into the private jet she came to a dead halt. The plane was luxurious and outfitted in cream leather and dark walnut wood. It hit her at that precise moment that her life had changed so drastically that it would never be the same again. From now on she would be living in the world of the super-rich where people like Maan didn't need to think twice before flying half way round the world in a private plane.
Maan gave her a nudge from behind and ushered her forward into the spacious cabin and guided her to one of the over-sized leather recliner seats by the window. He then lowered himself in the seat next to her, having already removed and given his jacket to the attendant when he had boarded the plane.
'We'll be taking off in a few minutes, Geet' he said. 'Fasten your seat belt.'
Geet realized she had no idea where they were flying to. 'Where are we going?' she questioned as she clinked her seatbelt into place.
'I wondered how long it would take you to ask that.' Maan's smile was tight. 'A long way. To Hong Kong, to be exact,' he answered.
Hong Kong? She blinked. 'How long will that take us?'
'Five hours if we're lucky' he replied. 'It's a long flight; if you want to eat or drink something, I can get the cabin attendant to bring it to you. Geet shook her head and said she didn't want anything.
'What about something to read, though it would be better if you sleep as much of the flight away as you possibly can' he replied.
Geet shook her head again and said 'No, I am very tired so I'll take your advice and try to get some sleep'.
The attendant appeared and asked 'Would you or Mrs. Khurana like anything before we take off, sir?'
'Thank you,' Maan said quickly, 'but my wife is exhausted and I don't want her disturbed. But I will have some coffee.'
'Of course, sir,' the attendant smiled and went to get the coffee.
Geet sighed and settled back in her seat and closed her eyes while Maan reached for his briefcase lying on the table in front of them. He dug out some documents and proceeded to immerse himself in paperwork.
When Geet opened her eyes again the cabin was in darkness. Someone had reclined her seat and covered her with a lightweight blanket, and a pillow had been positioned beneath her cheek. The shutters were down on the porthole windows.
Turning her head slowly, she found herself looking directly into Maan's sleeping face in the recliner next to hers. His unexpected closeness caught her breath. For some reason she hadn't expected him to be asleep as she had never seen him as anything but aggressively alert, and she found it rather disconcerting to see him like this.
She studied his face. There was a gentler look to him, while those tough lines of aggressive determination were eased away by sleep. And his mouth looked softer, kinder and surprisingly sensual. Surprising because she had never thought of Maan in that way before. But now she felt something begin to stir inside her, her heartbeat quickened and she was finding it difficult to breathe.
No; she denied confusedly and closed her eyes again, blocking it out... blocking him out. Maan might have made himself virtually indispensable to her very existence at the moment, but she didn't want to start feeling like that about him. It smacked too much of desperation.
Her emotions were traumatized enough with Dev's betrayal.
Dev. A sigh whispered from her, saddened and pained.
"Are you awake?'
She opened her eyes again to find herself staring directly into Maan's eyes.
Did he actually know the very moment she began thinking of his brother? she wondered. It was certainly uncanny the way he always managed to interrupt her thoughts before she even got as far as conjuring up Dev's' smooth handsome face.
'Yes.' She softly stated the obvious.
'Tell me about your parents,' Maan suddenly requested. 'Your father was a doctor, wasn't he?'
She nodded in confirmation. 'He and my mother met in Shimla when they were both there on a college trip. In fact, they were in Shimla on a medical conference when they were killed in a car crash' she said quietly, her hand drifted up to her throat to close over a little gold locket she always wore there.
'How old were you?'
'Thirteen.' She smiled sadly. 'I was staying with my aunt and uncle at the time, so I simply went on staying with them. They've been very good to me,' she added on a soft sigh.
'But you still miss your parents,' he quietly concluded.
'Yes.'
'Shh,' he murmured, when her dark eyes glazed over with tears. His hand came up and his fingers brushed a stray strand of black hair away from her cheek. Then he gently wiped away the two trails of tears that dropped from each eye with his thumb pad. Then he gazed deeply into her eyes and gently shook his head. Geet blinked as a shiver went down her spine.
'Go to sleep,' he commanded gently.
Geet closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep again.
She gave a nervous start and opened her eyes only to see Maan bending over her. He was shaking her and saying 'Geet, you need to wake up. We will be coming in to land in a few minutes.'
She sat up and blinked in confusion and then she gave another nervous start, when he suddenly reached across her, his warm body brushing against hers as he flicked the cover away from the window. 'If you want to see one the most spectacular sights you're ever likely to see, then look out there,' he suggested, moving smoothly back into his own seat.
Her eyelashes fluttered, a moment's blank confusion holding her completely still while she tried to ignore the light tingles the innocent brush of his body had activated in her. No, she told herself in horror. It was the surprise which had caused the sensation, not...'
'Geet?' he prompted.
She sucked in a shaky breath and pulled herself together, glancing to her right - then she gasped at the sight that met her eyes.
It was nighttime outside but stretching as far as she could see, there were tall buildings of all shapes and sizes, packed in tightly, one on top of the other, all lit up like Christmas trees.
'Meet Hong Kong,' Maan said quietly. Anything that is worth anything is traded here. For a tiny outcrop of rock, it wields more corporate power than most the world's governments would dare to admit.'
She could believe it, Geet thought as she stared in awe at the kind of skyline that could give Manhattan a run for its money.
'I have been coming here most of my life. After I graduated from university, my father suggested I start my corporate career in the Hong Kong office. So, I lived here for almost two years until my father died. I then moved back to India to take over the running of the company. I try to come here as often as I can. It's the only place where I can wander around almost anonymously without being harassed by the press or the media.
All of a sudden she looked down and realized she had grabbed his arm and her nails were digging into his flesh creating little crescent shaped indents.
On a sudden flush of color she unclipped her hand and mumbled 'I'm so sorry, I just didn't...'
In answer, Maan took hold of her hand, placed it back on his arm and held it there. 'I thought you knew, Geet,' he murmured. 'You can cling to me as fiercely as you like. It's what I'm here for.'
