C h a p t e r 7

The day passed by smoothly for Karan and Kriya. Both of them enjoyed shopping for each other and themselves as well; choosing one thing after another; rejecting some while buying the others. They reached home super tired from the running around from one shop to another. But after a quick shower, both picked themselves up on their feet to cook dinner. They, mostly Karan, couldn't forget that Shilpa was coming over.

More than Kriya, Karan was excited to meet her again. And why wouldn't he be? It gave him one more reason to be around Shilpa! After years that too! As they entered the kitchen, both started cooking. While Kriya handled the stove, Karan busied himself in cutting vegetables. This was his way of trying to divert his attention from Shilpa's thoughts.

In an hour's time, they were all done and the only thing left was sweet dish after dinner. Kriya refused to make anything special as she was already tired. Karan didn't force it and they decided to just serve ice-cream. Both left for their own rooms to change.

When the doorbell rang, Kriya opened it to welcome Shilpa in. When Shilpa saw Kriya, she smiled and didn't know what to say. She knew Kriya since she was a child but she wasn't sure if Kriya remembered her or not. She was a child after all when she had left. Karan came down and was again stricken by Shilpa's beauty. He had to force his emotions aside to not do or say anything that he shouldn't in front of Kriya.

He started with introductions, "Shilpa, this is Kriya and Kriya, this is Shilpa." Formal introductions and all being done, Kriya welcomed her in. As they walked to the living room, Shilpa whispered to Karan.

"You've done an exceptional job raising her."

"No doubt." He replied before taking his seat next to Kriya. She was a bit taken back by his harsh tone but then again, she felt like she deserved it. She had the chance back then to do the same but she had chickened out.

They all sat in awkward silence; one thing neither of them were used to. All three of them were the loud kind and this was way too silent for them. Kriya decided to try easing it up.

"So… Karan says you're a great dancer?"

"Is that right?" Shilpa asked back looking at Karan. He replied.

"Well you were the last time I saw you."

"Wait, you both know each other?" Kriya asked. That came as a surprise to her.

"Yea… uhm… we met last time I was in India." He replied. This was obviously going on the wrong side of conversation. Shilpa realized Kriya knew nothing and so decided to make a save for it.

"And I smell great food. Who made it?"

Kriya was quick to get distracted as she replied, "We did. You'll love it."

"Then let's go?" she asked. Kriya nodded and walked out first. Karan stood up and mouthed a 'thank you' to Shilpa. She mouthed back, 'Your welcome' before they both followed Kriya to the dining room; that was right next to the kitchen; separated by a small wall in between.

After dinner, all three of them settled in the living room again holding bowls of ice-cream, as decided, for dessert. They chatted a bit about the mission and discussed strategies on how one of them will always be around Rey to keep an eye on him. Just then, Karan's phone beeped red flashes. Looking at both of them, he turned to turn on the webcam of his laptop and connected to messenger.

As soon as he went online, Rajveer popped up on the screen. Karan turned the webcam to reveal both Kriya and Shilpa. Rajveer smiled seeing them. "Shilpa! How are you? Good to see you all together!"

"I'm good." Shilpa replied before Karan took over. First, he gave him 'I'm going to kill you' look and just when he was going to start, Rajveer replied to the look.

"Hey, don't glare at me! She's the best in the field. You yourself asked for the best, so there you have it!"

Kriya was confused on what they were talking about but Shilpa was quite aware. Karan was mad at Rajveer for not telling him beforehand that she was involved in the mission as well.

"Whatever, tomorrow we'll start our work. Mr. Singhania still doesn't know so we will do that. It'll relax him a bit."

Kriya spoke in instantly. "No!" When they gave her a confused look, she explained. "I mean don't tell him the names. You can say that someone is here but not the names. If a time comes when they are caught and the people torture them, we could be revealed. It's not a good thing for us or for Rey. It could get him in danger."

Rajveer answered. "You're right… Karan, do as she says," And then added, "I get why you say she is on her way of being the best." Karan gave a proud look. Before signing out, Rajveer gave a wink to Karan and looked at Shilpa, clearly giving a hint to both of them. Shilpa looked away and Karan abruptly shut the laptop off.

Kriya asked once sitting back down, "What was all that about?"

Shilpa diverted the topic again. "I should be leaving."

"No, please. Stay… we are going to be spending lots of time together for next few weeks or months. So just stay. We'll have fun and get to know each other."

Kriya suggested and both of them looked at Karan. "What? Don't look at me! Both of you are stubborn and if you both get together, there's no chance for me. So do whatever. Just don't stay awake till late. Kriya, you have college to go to tomorrow morning." Karan replied before picking up his laptop and leaving. And then the girls had their night in together; enjoying and getting to know each other even more.

Karan, in his room, picked up his cell phone and dialed Adithya's number. "Hello… Mr. Singhania… Karan speaking… I'm fine…yes we're here… don't worry about him… your son is in safe hands now and one of us will always be watching him at all times…I'm sorry, I can't tell you who all… if a time comes and then torture you all, it might endanger him if we're exposed. Hope you understand… yea of course… if we get any clues on who it might be, we'll let you know… yes take care… Good night!"

And that was it… He had told Adithya about it and everything was taken care of for the time being. Yet, there was to discover who the people were that wanted to hurt Adithya through Rey. Karan stretched himself up for the long night and started reading all the files he had on them which contained the contacts Adithya had with all the politicians and civilians. They were a lot to go through! One night was surely not enough to study each one of them.

"Damn, never thought there could be these many contacts related to one person!" he thought out-loud to himself after a while.

Around 2 am, Karan was still reading files. He yawned and decided to go down and make himself a cup of coffee. He saw Kriya sleeping peacefully on the couch. He looked around but didn't see Shilpa around. Hearing a low noise coming from the kitchen, he walked towards it to see her there doing exactly what he had came down for… making a cup of coffee!

She looked up seeing him walk in a passed him a smile. "One for you too?" she asked and he nodded, taking the high stool and sitting down.

"Can't sleep?" he asked.

"You couldn't either." She replied back.

"I was just reading the files. It's hard to suspect anyone… It could be someone close to them or someone they don't even know."

"You're the best I've known of. And from what I see, you've trained Kriya well as well. You'll figure it out in time. Don't stress yourself." She replied with sympathy and concern.

"I know… but I wonder… was it right to involve Kriya in this mission? It's only her first mission and it's hard enough…"

"Everything will work out just fine." She said, hoping it would soothe him a little.

Pouring the coffee in two separate coffee mugs, she took a sit next to Karan by the window. Both of them looked out of the window and sipped their coffee in silence. She broke the silence by whispering. "You should have told her, you know?"

"Yea? And what? Let her think that she is to blame?"

"You know it was my fault! I'm just saying she needs to know the truth… about me… about us."

"What's the point? It's not like anything is still there between us, is there?" he asked, challenging her to speak up…See if she still cared. She stayed mum, making him angry… upset more… He had hoped she would speak up.

"That's what I thought. No need to tell her then!" he said, almost loud.

"Shh! You'll wake her up." She replied.

"See, that's the problem with you. You always care about everyone. Everyone else but me." He suddenly stopped, knowing he had spoken a bit too much; knowing that he let his anger get the best of him.

He got up and murmured, "Good night." He walked away with the coffee in his hand. She watched him walk up the stairs angrily. She was paining just as much as he was. Yet again, she didn't have the nerve to tell him.

The next morning, Karan woke Kriya up. When she refused to get up, he pulled her up. "That's why I say no to late night movies!"

"When you know I don't wake up in morning, then why do allow?" she poured all the blame on him.

"Oh! So I have to take the blame either ways! You cheater!"

Kriya called out from the bathroom, "Whatever!"

Karan fixed them breakfast and served it. Just then Kriya came out, with a purse hanging on her hand, a strapped sleeve shirt and her usual short jeans. She asked, "Too much?"

"Just perfect." Karan replied and continued, "One thing's missing."

"What?!" she freaked. "I spent almost an hour choosing this and still missing!?"

He laughed. "Nothing big." He took a pinch of mascara from her lashes and applied it behind her ear, just like one would apply kohl.

She shied and said, "Come on. Don't be such a mother."

"Eat up." He replied to avoid the emotional conversation that sometimes follows. She did and asked. "Where did Shilpa run off to?"

"Uh, she left early morning I suppose. She wasn't here when I came down. Probably out for a jog. Don't worry about her. It's a habit for her to leave."

"Habit of leaving?" Kriya asked.

"Never mind. Finish it fast. You'll get late." She dropped the topic and giving him a quick hug, sprinted out of the door and into her car. He watched as her car zoomed out of sight. His thoughts wandered back to Shilpa and the night before. He decided upon finding her and apologizing for losing his calm.

Rey reached the college and joined Swayam, Nilesh, and Vicky. He asked, "Where's the Diva?"

'Must be on her way." Vicky replied.

Swayam looked at Rey and asked, "How's Kriya?"

"All well. She left for her home." He replied.

Nilesh asked getting hyper, "And you let her?!"

Swayam said, "Dude, you still falling for her?"

Rey continued the tease, "Don't you remember what she did the other night?" He grinned recalling the incident.

"Oh stop it. That was just an accident." He replied back.

"Anyway, she's promised mom that she'll visit every now and then." Rey told them.

All three of them were happy hearing that. No matter the time they had spent together, they felt like she was one of them already. Only, they didn't know that they were only few minutes away from meeting Kriya again. And then, they'd be seeing her each day and not just on weekends.

Sharon asked from behind, "Hey guys. Who's visiting?"

They turned to see her. As always, Swayam tried hard to not make it obvious that he was awestruck at her beauty. She too looked at others but not him.

Rey reminded her about the story on how they were just hanging out, how Kriya came and was leaving and how she helped them. Actually, she was the one who fought them. They were standing there trying to free themselves. The other boys joined in on praising the way Kriya beat the crap out of them. Then they explained how Kriya had gotten hurt and how she stayed at Rey's house for the weekend till she got better.

"That girl is definitely something! I have to meet her on the weekend." She commented. No, not out of jealousy but out of admiration.

They all walked out of the cafeteria and while walking towards their class, they had to pass through the entrance of the school. As they passed, a car came to a screeching stop making them turn towards it. Sharon stopped talking and turned as well.

A girl came out of the shiny red sports car after parking it. As it was, all the boys went flat seeing that. Some even whistled, making her roll her eyes.

It's so easy to melt the boys nowadays!

She turned. The boys stopped, surprised. It took them a minute to recover and realize that it was Kriya. Sharon asked, "Who's that?" seeing the jaws of all four of them boys dropped.

Rey replied with a smile, "That's Kriya." He couldn't believe she was actually there!

Vicky yelled her name out, "Kriya!"

She turned towards the voice and looked at them. Then with a smile, she made her way towards them. She didn't think it'd be that easy to spot them in the huge college. Yet again, her luck! Somewhere inside, she felt glad to see Rey again. Yes, she knew she'd be seeing him as part of the mission. Still, she just felt overjoyed.

"Hi!" she said. "What a co-incidence."

"Yea! You didn't tell us you were going to attend this college?" Swayam asked.

She replied, "And you all didn't tell me you guys went here." Oh, how she hated lying! Though, that counted as a partial lie seeing that they really hadn't told her and they didn't ask if she knew.

"Hmm! Fair enough!" Nilesh replied.

She looked at Sharon with a smile. "Hi, you must be Sharon?"

She was surprised. "Yea, how do you know?" she replied returning the hand shake.

"Rey told me about his friends and I also borrowed a few of your clothes. Hope you don't mind." She said sweetly.

"Of course not. That' nothing compared to what you did for my friends."

"Oh please. I did nothing. Just used my brain a bit."

This was her first time in public around so many people. She was nervous but that didn't show on her face at all. The bell rang and Sharon said, "We can talk later. Right now, we should get to class."

They all nodded.

Karan fished through his bag looking for a thing in particular. Half of the things were thrown around the room. While the other half of his clothes were wrinkled up in the bag as he continued his search. "Ofo! This pen drive! Why does it have to be so small?" he asked himself.

He opened the zipper of his bag, hoping it'd be in there. Fishing through the other stuff he felt, he touched the pen drive and gave a grin of success. "Finally!" he said excited in victory as he had been looking for it since the last half hour.

He pulled it out of the small pocket and along with that, another thing come out too, unknown to him, and fell on the ground, rolling on the floor a couple of times before it came to a stop. It was a ring. And not just any ring. It was a ring that wiped off the smile on his face. The type of ring one gives or obtains during engagements. He bent down and picked it up in his fingers.

He stared at it for a long time as he had flashes of the girl. It was his engagement ring. The engagement that was to take place years ago. The girl he loved more than anything. The sound of her laughter surrounded him. He smiled at the memories. Then, the smile again disappeared as he remembered how she had left him the day after the incident.
