Hi all,

On Facebook recently there has been an uproar with regards to Burma and its treatment of the muslims who have been displaced, segregated into separate areas, may have been massacred and a lot more have had to flee to neighbouring countries such as BAngladesh etc.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/burmas-monks-call-for-muslim-community-to-be-shunned-7973317.html

I wanted to have a debate around this, as a lot of concerns have been raised regarding the lack of coverage the western media has given to this major issue. I carried out a google search to see which western newspapers have raised this issue, newspapers have mentioned them in the UK, however news channels have shown a lack of interest in this topic.

The Guardian and the BBC newspapers have only just begun their coverage of this massive injustice to the muslim Rohingya community in Burma.

Amnesty has stated that the Rohingya community has been subject to violence and abuse by the security forces:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-18921960

The questions around this debate are to be focused on:
!) whether the media has become partial in portraying news, other cases of genocide etc. have been given a lot of media coverage,
2) whether the media has become influenced since 9/11
3) whether the attacks in Burma are based around a growing islamaphobia feeling
4) whether this news is given less important e because Burma has officially become a democracy and the western countries supported this move for democracy however because they don't want burma to be criticised as a failed democracy they have decided to stay mum
5) if you think the UN has forgotten that it is an impartial body, that should act as soon as they get information regarding displacement of a community, genocide, abuse against a certain group etc.

In my opinion I feel that the media has become evidently partial, i.e. the tone relating to muslims is strongly negative, in the UK you have captions stating- muslim boy, islamic group, muslim woman, qu'ran reacher and I don't see it happening to other religious groups- this ma be evident to me because I have done this media bullying topic for my degree in criminology

i do also think that the media was slightly partial before 9/11 however after 9/11 it has become a lot more clearer, a strong stance for countries such as israel etc.

I think that it is not a case of islamaphobia in Burma although generally islamaphobia has increased worldwide, i believe initially it started as tensions between two religious groups and now the govt have taken sides and are using the argument that they are 'illegal immigrant' though many of the muslim citizens are native citizens- I am also strongly confused that the monks have chosen sides, I now it can be said about all religious individuals (i.e. mullahs, archbishops, bishops, pandits etc) but I want to question why the stance of the buddhist minks is not questioned by the media, who have called for a segregated muslim society, and promoted massacres against muslims- this is the crux of the issue, the media have completely ignored this, no mention of the monks and their involvement- this shows how biased the media is

I do think that because the west were strongly pro democracy for burma they do feel that if burma is criticised it will reflect badly on them therefore they have opted to remain quiet regarding this issue

I definitely think the UN is not impartial, no arguments there

Please guys don't see it as bashing towards religious groups or a remark against 9/11- I feel it is a sensitive issue however it is one of those issues that needs to be raised

So can we hopefully have a clean debate 😃

King Abdullah has ordered $50m (32m) in aid be sent to a Muslim minority in Burma, which a human rights group said had been targeted by the authorities since sectarian riots in June.

A report on the Saudi state news agency said the Rohingya community had been "exposed to many violations of human rights including ethnic cleansing, murder, rape and forced displacement".

Human Rights Watch said the Rohingya people had suffered mass arrests, killings and rapes at the hands of the Burmese security forces. There are at least 800,000 Rohingya in Burma, but they are not recognised as one of the country's many ethnic and religious groups.

Burma has said it exercised "maximum restraint" in quelling riots in June. Saudi Arabia sees itself as a guardian of global Muslim interests.

32 million!! that's handy!
As for awareness - it seems Facebook is doing a pretty good job!
Dont know enough of the background to comment or to debate but having Saudi Arabia as a big brother at least counts for something - aid and that during the Holy Month too will Im sure go some way to help.

The Western media simply wants to portray Muslims in a negative light. The moment a Muslim(in some instances a so-called Muslim) does something wrong it is shown on all news channels across the world.

But when something horrible is done towards Muslims they don't show it, as they don't want people to sympathize with them and they don't want other people to realise that Muslims are normal people like most humans and that they aren't all terrorists.

definitely!
sadly, this serious matter hasn't gotten enough attention and actions towards it but if it was even a small negative point by a muslim, it would have made headlines worldwide!
